Magisk v18.1 and Magisk Manager 7.0.0 are genuine February 2019 releases, not current stable versions. Use them only for a compatible legacy phone, an old ROM guide, or software preservation. For most modern devices, follow the current image-patching method in the official installation documentation instead of flashing the old recovery ZIP.
Official download sources
The authoritative source for Magisk is the developer’s GitHub repository: github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk. Check the official release archive for the v18.1 tag. Do not use an inferred filename or an unverified direct asset URL; GitHub’s historical asset presentation can change.
Magisk Manager 7.0.0 may be available through historical archives. APKMirror has a listing for this version at this page, but it is an unofficial archive, not the developer’s source. A matching filename alone does not prove that an APK is original or unmodified.

- Avoid pages offering “Magisk Pro,” “Premium,” “Cracked,” or “one-click root” packages.
- Reject downloads distributed through random shortened links, Telegram channels, forums, or Google Drive accounts.
- Compare a cryptographic hash when the release record supplies one, and scan the file before installing it.
- Do not install an APK that requests unrelated permissions or contains unexplained advertising components.

Manager 7.0.0 was designed to work with the Magisk generation beginning at v18.0, so it is historically compatible with v18.1. The APK manages an installed root environment; it does not root a phone by itself.

Is v18.1 compatible with your phone?
Android-version support is not a guarantee of device support. The v18.1 notes mention Android 4.2, but compatibility also depends on the exact model, firmware build, boot image, partition layout, recovery and bootloader.
- Potentially suitable: an older Android 4.2–9 device whose ROM or device guide specifically requires v18.1.
- Usually unsuitable: current phones using dynamic partitions, Android Verified Boot changes, system-as-root,
init_boot, or vendor-specific flashing procedures. - Do not proceed if you cannot obtain the exact stock firmware or boot/recovery image needed to recover the phone.
Current Magisk documentation treats custom-recovery installation as deprecated and recommends patching the correct stock image whenever possible: official install guide.
Prerequisites and risks
- Complete a device-specific backup, including files not synchronized to cloud storage.
- Unlock the bootloader; this commonly triggers a factory reset.
- For the legacy method, use a custom recovery proven compatible with the exact model and firmware.
- Keep the matching stock
boot.img,init_boot.img,recovery.img, or complete factory firmware. - Charge the phone and install working ADB/Fastboot tools where the device requires them. Platform-Tools are available from Google.
- Confirm the architecture, Android release, model number, and build number before flashing anything.
Root modifications can cause boot loops, broken OTA updates, failed banking or streaming apps, lost DRM or enterprise controls, and support or warranty complications. No method guarantees that integrity checks or banking applications will continue to work.

Legacy installation with a custom recovery
This procedure is historical and device-specific. The presence of TWRP does not mean every phone can safely flash this ZIP.
- Verify that a device-specific guide or test confirms Magisk v18.1 support.
- Back up the phone and obtain the exact recovery and stock firmware for the model and build.
- Download v18.1 from the official release archive or a clearly identified historical copy; do not use a repacked ZIP.
- Boot into the compatible custom recovery using the manufacturer-specific key combination.
- Flash the v18.1 ZIP without wiping partitions or restoring files casually.
- Reboot to Android. If Manager was not installed by the package, install the verified Manager 7.0.0 APK.
- Open Manager, complete any requested setup, and reboot if prompted.
- Check the displayed Magisk version and approve a root request only for software you trust. Test root with a reputable utility before installing modules.
Some devices require a patched boot or recovery image rather than a recovery-flashed ZIP. Never flash a package or image intended for another model, slot, or firmware build.
Modern installation path
On a supported contemporary device, install the current Magisk app from the official releases page and patch an image from the same firmware currently installed on the phone.

- Unlock the bootloader and accept the possible data wipe.
- Extract the exact stock
boot.img,init_boot.img, or (for many Samsung procedures) the firmwareAPfile. - In Magisk, choose Install, then Select and Patch a File, and select that stock file.
- Copy the generated image to the computer, for example:
adb pull /sdcard/Download/magisk_patched_[random_strings].img - Reboot to the appropriate bootloader or Fastboot mode.
- Flash only the partition required by the device’s official procedure, such as:
fastboot flash boot /path/to/magisk_patched.imgfastboot flash init_boot /path/to/magisk_patched.img - Reboot, complete any in-app setup, and retain the untouched stock image for recovery.
The required partition and Samsung workflow vary by model. The official guide covers boot, init_boot, recovery, and Samsung AP procedures; it explicitly warns never to flash an image patched for another device.
Verify the installation
- The app reports an installed Magisk version rather than “not installed.”
- A deliberately chosen, trusted app receives a root-permission prompt.
- Rebooting does not remove the installation or produce unexplained errors.
- Install modules only after the base installation works, and add them one at a time so a faulty module can be identified.
Troubleshooting
Boot loop after flashing
Likely causes include a wrong image, mismatched build, incompatible recovery, bad module, incorrect slot or partition, or verification/encryption conflicts. Return to recovery or bootloader mode, remove the offending module if possible, restore the exact stock image, and reflash complete factory firmware if necessary. A data wipe may be unavoidable.
Manager cannot detect Magisk
Check that Magisk was actually installed, that the APK was not repackaged, and that the app and core versions belong to the same historical generation. Do not respond by installing several random “patched Manager” APKs.

TWRP rejects the ZIP
The recovery, ramdisk arrangement, partition scheme, or Android build may be unsupported, or the ZIP may be corrupt. Use the device-specific image-patching procedure instead of repeatedly forcing the flash.
OTA updates fail
Root commonly interferes with normal OTA installation. Follow the manufacturer’s firmware process and the relevant Samsung or device instructions in the official guide; keep an untouched stock image available.

Use it only when a known legacy device, ROM, development environment, or archival task specifically depends on it. Otherwise choose the current official Magisk release and its image-patching workflow. KernelSU and APatch are additional technical alternatives for some devices, but neither is a drop-in replacement for Magisk modules and neither is universally preferable.

Frequently asked questions
Is Magisk v18.1 still safe?
It is old software. Its safety depends on obtaining an unmodified file and using it on a compatible device; it lacks fixes and device support added in later releases.
Is Magisk Manager 7.0.0 the same as the Magisk app?
No. “Magisk Manager” is the older application branding. Modern releases use a single Magisk app, while v7.0.0 is the historical management APK.
Can I install v18.1 on Android 10 or newer?
Do not infer compatibility from the Android version alone. Modern partition and verified-boot designs often require newer procedures and builds.

Bootloader unlocking commonly erases user data, and recovery from a failed flash may require a factory reset. Maintain a verified backup.
What should I do if the phone bootloops?
Return to bootloader or recovery mode and restore the exact stock image or factory firmware for the device and build. Remove modules only when the recovery environment permits it.
