You can start drawing in ibisPaint X on a compatible phone you already own—no paid upgrade or stylus required. Download the free, ad-supported app from your device’s app store, then build depth by separating your sketch, color, and shadows onto layers and using brushes, materials, and filters with intention.
Check compatibility and download ibisPaint X
ibisPaint supports iPhone and iPad running iOS 15.0 or later or iPadOS 15.0 or later, and Android phones and tablets running Android 7 or later, according to ibis inc.’s About ibisPaint page. Confirm your operating system and use the app-store listing offered for your device.
- Open the App Store on iPhone or iPad, or Google Play on Android.
- Search for ibisPaint X and check that the listing is compatible with your device.
- Install ibisPaint X if you want the free edition. It includes advertisements. The paid ibisPaint version has the same features aside from advertising, while Premium adds separately listed features. See ibisPaint’s download page for the store routes.
The app’s official overview lists more than 47,000 brush types, 23,000 materials, 80 filters, and 2,100 fonts. These are ibis inc.’s published counts, not independent evaluations. You do not need to sort through that library to begin; a pencil or pen brush and a few layers are enough for a first drawing.

Use layers to keep the parts of your picture editable. A sketch on one layer, flat colors on another, and shadows on a third make it easier to adjust one part without repainting everything. The following is a practical sequence based on the app’s listed tools, not a tested tutorial.
#1 Best Overall
- Stylus Pen for Touchscreen: No Bluetooth or charging needed—use instantly on any capacitive touch screen (iPad, iPhone, Android, Samsung). Dual rubber tips (5mm/6.6mm) ensure precise control for writing, drawing, or gaming. Lightweight aluminum body with vibrant colors.
- Precision & Comfort Redefined: High sensitivity rubber tip glides smoothly without lag or scratches. Ergonomic design reduces wrist strain for extended use. Compatible with tablets, phones, and Laptops.
- Dual-Tip Flexibility: Switch between 0.20” and 0.26” rubber nibs for detailed art or bold notes. Anti-scratch, fingerprint-resistant tip. Pretty bright metal colors inspire creativity.
- Effortless Multi-Device Compatibility: Works seamlessly on Apple, Samsung, Android, and more. No apps or setup—just pick up and write. Perfect for notes, games, or gifts—ready to spark ideas instantly. Replaceable tips included for long-term use.
- Creative Freedom, Anywhere: Lightweight aluminum stylus with natural grip. Includes 6 replaceable tips and 3 color stylus pens. Perfect for sharing with friends, family, or colleagues, this bundle ensures you’re always equipped to capture inspiration.
- Choose a canvas. Start a new illustration and select a canvas size that suits what you plan to share or save. If you are unsure, use a simple, moderate-sized canvas rather than adding complexity before you draw.
- Rough in the main shapes. Select a pencil or pen-style brush and sketch the large forms first. Keep this rough drawing on its own layer so you can lower its visibility or replace it later.
- Add clean shapes or color separately. Create a new layer for the main colors. Blocking in broad areas before small details makes it easier to see whether the objects read clearly.
- Use a reference for consistent color. The reference window can keep an image visible while you work. The eyedropper can sample a color from an image, which is useful for reusing a chosen hue instead of estimating it repeatedly.
- Build a sense of form. Add a separate shadow layer and use a brush suited to the edge you want: a firmer brush for a defined cast shadow, or an airbrush-style brush for a softer transition. Keep the shadow on the side away from your imagined light source.
- Add texture or atmosphere sparingly. Try a material or a watercolor, oil, pencil, or airbrush-style brush to introduce surface variation. A subtle texture can separate a subject from a flat background without obscuring its shape.
- Export or share. Save an image for ordinary sharing, or use ibisPaint’s sharing options if you want to post work or share a drawing-process video.
Use the tools that solve a specific drawing problem
Depth comes from clear shapes, overlapping forms, value changes, and texture—not from applying every effect. Pick a tool because it addresses something visible in your drawing.
- Brushes: Pencil and pen styles suit sketching and edges; watercolor, oil, and airbrush styles can create different marks and transitions. Brush settings are adjustable.
- Materials: Use them to add surface patterns or visual texture. Check how strongly a material competes with the subject before keeping it.
- Filters: Filters can alter the overall look, but they are not a substitute for separating forms with light and shadow. Preview changes before committing.
- Rulers and manga frame tools: Use these when you need guided lines, geometric structure, or panel borders rather than drawing them freehand.
- Mesh-form editing: This can reshape selected content when a local adjustment is more useful than redrawing it.
- Text and animation: Text supports lettering and labels; animation tools include frame copying and onion-skin functions for viewing neighboring frames.
ibis inc. describes the app’s drawing-process video as its “unique and defining feature.” That option is useful if you want to show how a piece developed, but it is separate from exporting a finished still image.

Do you need a stylus to draw on your phone?
No. You can start with your phone’s touch input and the app’s brushes. A stylus is optional, and buying one only makes sense if it suits the way you draw or your device supports the features you want.
Pressure sensitivity is not universal: it depends on the exact phone and stylus combination. ibisPaint’s supported stylus list names selected compatible devices and conditions. For example, it lists SonarPen for Android devices with a 3.5 mm headphone jack, with an adapter caveat, and S Pen support for compatible Samsung devices. It also lists 3D Touch pressure sensitivity on supported older iPhones; newer iPhones do not have screen-based 3D Touch pressure sensitivity. Check your precise model, connection requirements, and palm-rejection support before buying anything. A generic capacitive stylus should not be assumed to provide pressure sensitivity.

The mobile comparison also limits free users to up to five imports of original brush patterns.
