GCam PX 8.1 is an unofficial Google Camera port, not a Google release. The latest PX 8.1 entry listed on the cstark27 developer page is PXv8.1_GCam-v1.2, dated January 25, 2021. A commonly indexed CameraPX package is version 8.1.008.341125824; it requires Android 10 or newer and a 64-bit ARM device. It is not the latest GCam generation overall: the current stable index also lists newer ports, including BSG 9.4.103 (August 16, 2026) for Android 11 and newer.
What GCam PX 8.1 is
“GCam” is the community name for modified or ported Google Camera applications. PX identifies one port lineage associated with cstark27, Urnyx05 and johngalt1. Camera PX is based on Google Camera 8.1.008 and was adapted for selected Pixel and non-Pixel phones. There is no universal PX APK or configuration that works on every Android device.
Google’s official app is Google Camera (also called Pixel Camera on newer Pixels). PX is third-party modified software distributed through community repositories, so terms such as “official Google Camera PX” or “Google-approved APK” are inaccurate. Use the developer index to identify the PX build, then compare the APK metadata with your phone before installing. These two references are related but should not be treated as interchangeable universal downloads.

APKMirror’s page includes the cstark27 signing information, certificate fingerprints and SHA-256 data. A matching hash or signature indicates that your file matches the published file after signing; it does not make an unofficial modified app risk-free.
“Latest” needs a qualification
PXv8.1 v1.2 is the latest PX 8.1 build listed by that developer repository, not the latest Google Camera or latest GCam overall. The stable-version index lists newer BSG, BigKaka, Hasli, Shamim and other ports. Newer does not automatically mean better on an older phone.
Compatibility checklist
Android 10 alone does not guarantee that PX will work. Check every item before sideloading:

- Android: the indexed CameraPX APK requires Android 10 (API 29) or newer.
- Architecture: it is arm64-v8a, so a 32-bit ARM phone cannot install that build.
- Camera2 API: Camera2 must be enabled and expose sufficient capabilities. Use a Camera2 diagnostic app to inspect its hardware level and camera list.
- Chipset and drivers: Snapdragon phones generally have the broadest support. Exynos, Kirin and MediaTek models may work with limitations or need a phone-specific fix.
- Google services: Google apps, or a compatible replacement such as microG, may be needed for some functions.
- Manufacturer restrictions: RAM, vendor camera libraries, Android build and permission policies affect stability and available features.
Camera2 exposes controls such as exposure, gain, white balance, denoising and sharpening, but a port can use only what the device implementation makes available. Android’s compatibility requirements are documented in the Android 8.1 CDD; practical GCam guidance is collected by the GCam Hub.

Check your phone before downloading
- Open Settings → About phone and record the Android version and model.
- Confirm that the device uses a 64-bit ARM processor; a diagnostic app or the manufacturer’s specifications can help.
- Run a Camera2 API diagnostic app and check whether the API is enabled and what hardware level is reported.
- Find the phone-specific GCam thread or configuration page and see whether PX 8.1 is recommended.
- Choose an APK whose Android minimum, architecture and package match your device.
How to install PX 8.1 on Android
Back up important photos, confirm the stock camera works, and retain the original download page before changing anything.
- Download the APK from the cstark27 listing or the specific APKMirror page, not from a filename-only “universal” link.
- Check the listed version, Android minimum, arm64-v8a architecture, package name, size and available hash.
- Open the downloaded APK. If Android blocks it, tap Settings in the prompt and enable Allow from this source for the browser or file manager you used.
- Return to the installer and tap Install.
- Open GCam and grant only the camera, microphone and media permissions required for the features you use.
- Run the app at default settings first. If the developer or phone guide supplies a matching XML, import that configuration and restart GCam.
Google documents the unknown-source flow and the setting’s removal path at its Android support page. To turn access off later, use Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps and disable the source app.
Configuration and XML files
Some PX builds work acceptably with defaults; others need tuning for a particular sensor, chipset or Android build. XML files are not interchangeable across every GCam version. A configuration made for BSG 8.1, for example, may cause PX 8.1 crashes, dark frames, color casts, lens errors or reset settings.

Fix crashes, black photos and missing lenses

The GCam Hub explicitly notes that no APK/configuration is universal. If repeated resets and device-specific fixes do not stabilize PX, uninstall it and return to the stock camera rather than weakening security settings or installing random variants.
Is PX 8.1 safe?
PX is modified software from an unofficial source. The GCam Hub says it cannot guarantee that every mirrored APK is safe and warns that a modified app could contain malicious code. APKMirror’s signature and hash records help establish file integrity, not Google endorsement or absolute safety.
- Keep Google Play Protect enabled and stop if Android or your browser reports a serious warning.
- Scan the downloaded file with a reputable service such as VirusTotal; a clean scan is not proof of trustworthiness.
- Review permissions and deny anything unrelated to camera, microphone or media use.
- Download from a recognized repository, preserve the source page and avoid repacked “premium,” “modded universal” or mystery bundles.
- When finished testing, disable Allow from this source for the browser or file manager.
Google explains that unknown-source apps can create risks including data loss, hacking and exposure of personal information at its support page.

Choose PX when your Android 10 arm64 phone has a device-specific recommendation and you accept experimentation. Choose a newer port when your Android 11-or-newer phone has a maintained, device-specific configuration. Choose the stock app when dependable access to every camera feature matters more than testing a mod.

Uninstalling and reverting
- Back up any photos or XML files stored in GCam folders.
- Open Settings → Apps → GCam/Camera PX and tap Uninstall.
- If you are switching variants, remove the old package only after confirming the replacement has the correct signature and architecture.
- Re-enable the stock camera if the manufacturer disabled its launcher shortcut, then test the stock app before deleting backups.

Do I need an XML configuration?
Not always. Start with defaults, then use only a configuration intended for the exact PX build and phone.
Why are my extra cameras missing?
The phone may not expose auxiliary cameras to third-party apps. Device-specific fixes sometimes help, but PX cannot unlock every lens.
Is PX 8.1 newer than GCam 9.x?
No. PX 8.1 is an older 8.1 lineage; newer GCam 9.x ports exist, but they may not be compatible with your phone.
