You can download a game on a school Chromebook only if the device supports Google Play and your school permits the Play Store and that game. Check Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences. If the setting is missing or the install option is blocked, ask your teacher or school administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction.

First, check whether Google Play is available

  1. Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen, then open Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then Manage Google Play preferences.
  3. If the option appears, follow the setup prompts. Google recommends updating ChromeOS before setting up Android apps. If the option is absent, Google says the Chromebook does not support Android apps. Google’s Chromebook instructions explain how to check availability and set up the Play Store.

Seeing the setting does not guarantee that you can install a game. School administrators manage school devices and may limit access to the Play Store or allow only selected apps. Google notes that schools may restrict websites and apps in its guide to school-managed Chromebooks.

Install an allowed Android game from the Play Store

If Play Store setup is available and your school allows the game:

  1. Complete the Play Store setup prompts.
  2. Open the Play Store app and search for the game.
  3. Check that it is available through your school-managed Play Store, then select Install.

Compatibility varies: some Android apps do not work on some Chromebook models. If the game is unavailable or you cannot select Install, ask your teacher or administrator whether the app is approved. Google’s guidance for managing Android apps on ChromeOS describes administrator controls, including choosing which apps students can install.

If you can’t download a game, what options remain?

Option What it does Main limitation
Google Play Installs an Android app on the Chromebook. The device must support Android apps, the school must allow the Play Store and game, and the game must be compatible.
Browser game Runs a game on a website without installing its Android app. The school may block the website, and the game must work in the browser.
Cloud gaming Streams a game over the internet from a cloud service. Requires internet access and service and game eligibility; school filters may block it. It does not download the full game for offline play.
Linux Runs software in ChromeOS’s Linux development environment. Linux may be unavailable on school devices, and game compatibility varies. It is not a way around school restrictions.

Browser games

Some games play directly in a browser, so an Android app download is not necessary. That does not make the site automatically accessible: school administrators can restrict websites. Google’s advice to consider a web app when deploying software that has both web and Android versions is for school administrators, not a guarantee that a student can access any game site. See Google’s app deployment guidance.

Cloud gaming

Cloud gaming streams the game rather than installing its full files on the Chromebook. Google lists services including NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Amazon Luna, and Boosteroid among Chromebook gaming options in its Chromebook gaming guide. Availability, game eligibility, controls, and school network access vary, so check the service’s current requirements before relying on it. NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW system requirements include Chromebook browser support and recommend a USB gaming mouse; that peripheral is optional, not a way to gain access to a blocked service.

Linux

Linux on Chromebook is a developer environment, not the standard route for installing school games. It is off by default and may not be available on work or school Chromebooks. Google describes its purpose and availability in Set up Linux on your Chromebook. Do not enable or use it to work around a school block.

What to do when an option is missing or blocked

  • Play Store setting missing: The Chromebook may not support Android apps, or the school may have limited access. Ask your teacher or administrator which applies.
  • Game missing or Install unavailable: The school may not have approved it, or the app may not be compatible with the Chromebook. Ask whether there is an approved version or alternative.
  • Website or streaming service blocked: Treat the block as a school policy decision. Ask whether the site or service is permitted for school use.

On a managed Chromebook, students generally cannot change administrator-controlled app or website restrictions themselves. The school administrator is the right person to confirm what is allowed on that device.
