U.S. stocks rose on Oct. 2, 2026, after a weaker-than-expected jobs report eased expectations of an imminent Federal Reserve rate hike. The Nasdaq Composite reached a record high, while Nvidia and SpaceX shares advanced. But the rally had important limits: Treasury yields rebounded, market breadth was weak, and the jobs data also raised concerns about hiring momentum. The available coverage does not verify the exact Dow futures move before the cash-market open or the technical buy points behind the headline’s stock picks.
Why did stocks rise after a weak jobs report?
The U.S. Labor Department’s October 2026 employment report showed payrolls rose by 29,000, far below the 90,000 increase expected by economists polled by Reuters. Reuters also reported sharp downward revisions to prior months. Investors interpreted the softer data as reducing pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates soon.
Reuters reported that traders assigned a 20% probability to a 25-basis-point rate increase at the October meeting after the report, down from 26% beforehand. Those figures are market-implied estimates reported by Reuters, not a Fed decision or a guarantee of what policymakers will do. Reuters quoted Wells Fargo Investment Institute strategist Gary Schlossberg saying the data “definitely lessens the risk of an October rate hike,” while noting that attention remained on December.
That reaction helps explain why stocks could rise on disappointing employment news: lower expectations for near-term rate increases can support equity valuations. But the same report also signaled hiring substantially below forecasts, which can be read as evidence of economic weakness. Vanguard economist Adam Schickling told the Associated Press that the report strengthened the case for the Fed to remain patient, while describing a labor market with little evidence of meaningful strengthening. Reuters’ Oct. 2 market report and the Associated Press session report discuss the jobs data and rate outlook.

How did the major indexes and named stocks perform?
The Associated Press reported the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 250 points, or 0.5%, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.2% for the session. Reuters’ report was published at 11:37 a.m. ET, while trading was underway; its intraday snapshot showed the Dow up 0.36%, the S&P 500 up 0.69%, and the Nasdaq up 1.15%. These are different reporting times, so the Reuters figures should not be read as closing returns.
Reuters said Nvidia touched an intraday record high and was up 1.9% at the time of its report. The AP reported Nvidia rose 1.3% and was the single strongest force lifting the S&P 500. SpaceX gained 6.2% in Reuters’ intraday account. Those stock moves are reported snapshots, not verified closing prices.

The headline’s “buy” framing comes from an accessible Polaris Insights summary identifying investors.com as its source. That summary characterized Nvidia, SpaceX, and Bloom Energy as being in “buy areas,” but the full original Investors.com article and its underlying charts were not available in the material reviewed. Its exact entry levels, chart patterns, and suggested next steps therefore cannot be confirmed. “Buy area” is a technical label attributed to that summary—not a general recommendation or an independently validated signal.

Treasury yields may offset rate optimism
Reuters reported that a Treasury selloff tied to inflation and fiscal concerns had pushed the 10-year yield to its highest level in decades. The AP described a sharp intraday reversal on Oct. 2: the yield briefly fell below 5.17%, from a Thursday peak near 5.35%, then rebounded to 5.28% as oil pared losses. U.S. stocks also gave back some gains. Higher yields can weigh on equity valuations, so a softer rate outlook does not automatically remove pressure from bonds.
Oil remained volatile amid geopolitical uncertainty
Reuters reported Brent crude slipped below $100 amid discussion of additional European Union stock releases; its account noted no new update on the Middle East conflict. The AP reported Brent traded between $98 and $103 and settled at $102.25, down 0.1%, amid uncertainty about the Iran war’s effect on oil. These figures describe different points in the session, not a single price range observed at one instant.
Index gains did not reflect broad participation
Reuters counted 41 Nasdaq stocks at 52-week highs and 143 at 52-week lows. For the S&P 500, it reported nine 52-week highs and 16 lows. A record for the Nasdaq Composite can therefore coexist with many individual shares lagging.

Some companies fell sharply, and the S&P 500 faced a weekly loss
Reuters reported Nike fell 5.6% after a weak outlook, while Western Digital and Seagate each dropped around 14% after a report of Toshiba capacity expansion. Reuters also said the S&P 500 was on track for a weekly loss. The session’s gains were not universal, and the market’s direction on one day did not erase the week’s pressure.

Treat the phrase as a report about the source article’s technical characterization, not as enough information to place a trade. With no verified buy points or invalidation levels, the headline alone does not establish whether a stock is within a setup, whether the setup has failed, or what risk would be involved.
Best Value
Before relying on a technical stock idea, an investor would need to verify the original setup and assess at least these factors:
- The exact buy point, any stated buy range, and the level that would invalidate the setup.
- Whether the current share price is still within the stated range and whether trading volume confirms the move.
- The company’s earnings and business catalysts, alongside risks specific to the stock.
- Whether broader market breadth and Treasury yields support or conflict with the proposed trade.
The available summary does not provide those details for Nvidia, SpaceX, or Bloom Energy. It also does not verify the precise premarket Dow futures move. The Oct. 2 reports describe a fast-moving session, and the figures above should be understood in their stated contexts rather than as live market data.
