U.S. stocks finished higher on Friday, October 2, 2026, after a September hiring report eased some concerns about inflation. The premarket headline’s rising-futures and tumbling-oil language describes an earlier snapshot, not the closing picture: oil and Treasury yields recovered much of their initial declines during the session.
How the major indexes finished on October 2
All four major U.S. indexes ended the session higher, according to the Associated Press:
| Index | October 2 close | Change |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,722.72 | +0.7% |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 51,176.96 | +0.5% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 27,190.86 | +1.2% |
| Russell 2000 | 2,832.90 | +0.9% |
The Nasdaq reached a record high, according to the October 2 summary indexed by Investor’s Business Daily. Friday’s advance came after a mixed week, so the strong finish does not mean the market rose throughout the week.
Why stocks rose after the jobs report
The AP attributed the rally to September hiring slowing, which reduced concern that an overheated economy could add to inflation. In market terms, signs of cooling labor demand can ease pressure on prices and interest rates. That interpretation is not a guarantee that inflation will fall or that the Federal Reserve will take a particular action.

Treasury yields initially fell sharply after the report, then recovered much of their early decline. Oil prices also recovered much of their earlier drop. Those intraday reversals help explain why a headline focused on tumbling oil should not be read as a description of where prices stood at the close.
Which companies moved—and what is known about why
Tesla rose on quarterly deliveries
Tesla gained 4.7% after reporting 486,532 vehicle deliveries for its latest quarter, a total the AP said was above analysts’ expectations. The report provides a clear event associated with the gain; it does not establish how much of the move reflected that news versus broader trading.

What the oil headline does—and does not—show
Yahoo Finance reported that oil prices were mixed after G7 nations agreed to release 100 million barrels of crude and diesel stockpiles. That account does not establish the exact intraday price sequence or show that the stockpile agreement alone caused oil’s moves. The session recap likewise reports that oil recovered much of its early decline.
How to read the futures framing
Futures indicate where contracts are trading before the regular stock-market session; they are not the closing values of the indexes or a promise of how the session will end. Here, the headline captured a premarket snapshot, while the verified result was a broad advance at the close. The distinction matters when reading any market headline published before trading is complete.
