Dorothy opened in Telugu cinemas on October 2, 2026, in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. At the Hyderabad announcement, presenter Rana Daggubati said the title is a character’s name and means “a gift from God.” Singer Chinmayi Sripaada later defended the reporter who asked why the Telugu release kept the title, arguing that not every child has equal access to books and reading.
When did Dorothy release in Telugu?
The Telugu version was announced for October 2, 2026, in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. A BookMyShow listing subsequently marked Dorothy (Telugu) as in cinemas with that date, and TrackTollywood’s October 2 chart recorded opening-day activity for the Telugu version. Together, those listings support that it opened as scheduled, though they do not establish how widely it screened beyond the tracker’s coverage. BookMyShow’s listing and TrackTollywood’s chart provide the release-status evidence.

A reporter at the Hyderabad announcement asked whether the title would remain unchanged for the Telugu release, noting that it did not seem related to Telugu, and asked what it meant. Rana Daggubati replied: “Dorothy means a gift from God. That’s a character’s name in the film. Once you watch the film, you will understand why the film needs to be named that. I don’t even know what else we could name it.” The explanation was his account of the title’s meaning and connection to the story. Hindustan Times reported the exchange.

Rana also framed the film’s emotional themes as crossing language boundaries: “I just feel…when we cry, it has no language. Our laugh has no language. Nor does our pain. I believe emotions have no language.” That was his response to the broader question of how a film with a retained title might connect with Telugu-speaking audiences; it does not establish a general rule that titles need no translation.
Why did Chinmayi Sripaada defend the reporter?
After the question drew criticism, Chinmayi Sripaada argued that people should not mock a reporter for asking about a literary reference. In remarks reported by Hindustan Times, she referred to Dorothy as a character in a children’s storybook from 1900 called The Wizard of Oz. That date is part of Chinmayi’s reported wording; the coverage cited here does not independently establish the book’s publication history.
Her larger point was about unequal access to reading in childhood. She wrote that storybooks, comics and even reading in general were not available to every child as a matter of opportunity, and called for empathy. Chinmayi also noted that Dorothy is not a Tamil word. Her defense focused on the reporter’s right to ask for context rather than on whether viewers should already recognize the reference. Hindustan Times reported her response.

What is the film about, and who made it?
Dorothy is directed by Karthik Subbaraj and stars Keerthy Suresh, Sanath and Rishikanth. Hindustan Times lists Guneet Monga Kapoor, Achin Jain and Jyoti Deshpande as producers and describes queer themes in the film. At a Telugu Film Producers Council event, Subbaraj was quoted in translation as saying the film was special to him because its story was close to his heart. Published descriptions do not agree on the story’s decade: one Hindustan Times report places it in the 1980s, while another says the early 1990s. The available reports do not resolve that difference, so the setting should not be stated as settled fact. Hindustan Times release report; Hindustan Times coverage of Chinmayi’s response
How did the Telugu release reach cinemas?
Rana Daggubati presented the Telugu release through Spirit Media. The announcement was reported on October 1, 2026, with the theatrical date set for the following day; the later ticketing and trade listings show the Telugu version in cinemas on October 2. Hindustan Times also reported that the Tamil film had released in September and described a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival; those are claims from that outlet’s October 1 report.
