DoorDash says its new DoorDash Air system averaged less than five minutes from restaurant to a customer’s door in initial tests. That is a limited-sample company estimate—not a delivery promise—and the announced service is a planned pilot in Northern California, not a broadly available way to order Chipotle or Popeyes today.
What DoorDash announced
On September 30, 2026, DoorDash introduced DoorDash Air, an in-house drone delivery system designed around restaurant pickup and doorstep handoff. DoorDash named Chipotle, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, and Momo N Curry among its first restaurant partners. The company says the initial pilot will take place in Northern California, but it has not named the participating cities or addresses or given a start date. DoorDash’s announcement therefore does not establish that a particular customer can order by drone.
The central idea is a delivery system, not just a new aircraft: DoorDash says it is coordinating the aircraft with restaurant loading, packaging, order information, dispatch decisions, and tracking in the DoorDash app.
How fast could DoorDash Air deliver?
DoorDash says initial tests averaged under five minutes from restaurant to consumer door. The company qualifies that figure as coming from a limited sample of U.S. Marketplace deliveries of limited distance and size. It also says times vary and are not guaranteed. The figure is not a published service-level commitment or a prediction for every eligible order.

DoorDash previously cited an average drone delivery time of 25 minutes in its July 2026 certification announcement. That is broader historical context, not a controlled comparison with DoorDash Air: the company’s sources do not establish that the two figures used the same routes, sample, or measurement conditions. DoorDash also said that in 2025, more than 20% of orders on its platform traveled three to five miles and those took nearly 25% longer on average than shorter deliveries, which it attributed largely to time spent finding a Dasher for mid-range trips. Those are DoorDash’s platform analyses, not independently audited findings. The July announcement provides that context.
Can every DoorDash order go by drone?
No. DoorDash estimates that about 80% of typical restaurant orders are small and light enough for its aircraft, but that is a company estimate qualified by limited U.S. deliveries, order size, distance, and measurement period. The platform evaluates orders individually rather than treating all food orders as drone-eligible.

DoorDash says its routing platform considers factors including distance, weight, order contents, weather, flight range, and ground traffic. The company has not published the final thresholds for the DoorDash Air pilot, so customers should not assume that a particular item, address, or weather condition will qualify.
How pickup, delivery, and routing are meant to work
DoorDash describes a winch system for picking up orders and lowering them at delivery, with failsafes intended to lower the aircraft to the ground in rare events. Its plan also includes merchant loading systems and packaging intended to fit existing restaurant operations. Customers are meant to track the order in the app from preparation through flight and landing. These are features DoorDash has announced; the company has not yet provided public pilot results establishing how they perform in routine service.

Dispatch is another part of the system. DoorDash says its Autonomous Delivery Platform will choose order by order among a Dasher, its Dot ground robot, a drone, or an autonomous delivery partner based on which option it considers fastest and most reliable. That means a customer’s order may be delivered by another mode even if drone delivery is operating nearby.
DoorDash says its broader network has completed hundreds of thousands of lifetime autonomous deliveries across Dot and robot and drone partners. That aggregate does not describe the new DoorDash Air aircraft’s own delivery record.

Where DoorDash Air will be available
The announced initial pilot is in Northern California. As of the September 30 announcement, DoorDash had not identified the exact cities, participating addresses, launch date, operating hours, customer fees, or an eligibility checker. The named restaurant partners indicate planned participation, not that every branch—or every order from those brands—will be served by drone.
How DoorDash Air differs from DoorDash’s Wing deliveries
DoorDash Air is DoorDash’s announced in-house program. DoorDash also has drone deliveries operated with Wing, a separate partner service that had been announced in several regions before DoorDash Air.

The time claims are not an apples-to-apples performance test: they come from different services and announcements, and their underlying samples and conditions are not established as equivalent. The DoorDash–Wing Atlanta announcement describes that partner service.
What FAA certification means here
On July 29, 2026, DoorDash said its DoorDash Labs unit had earned FAA Part 135 air-carrier certification, which the company described as authorizing it to operate its own commercial drone delivery program. DoorDash said the FAA evaluation involved five stages covering aircraft airworthiness, maintenance programs, and safety procedures, and called itself the eighth drone operator to earn the certificate. These details are DoorDash’s account of its certification; certification does not mean the Northern California pilot is already available to customers.
