A manufacturer cloud shutdown does not always make a smart device useless. Community firmware, local interfaces and open protocols may restore useful control—but support depends on the exact model, hardware revision and setup, and a rescue can leave vendor-cloud features behind. These seven examples range from documented local bridges to methods reported without model-by-model compatibility details.

What each rescue route offers

Device Community route What is established—and what to check
First- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats No Longer Evil The reported route aims to restore remote temperature and mode control, including through Home Assistant. Exact revisions, flashing instructions and current maintenance status are not established here.
Neato Botvac D3–D7 OpenNeato Documented local web control through an ESP32-to-UART bridge. Verify the target model and wiring before proceeding.
SmartDry dryer sensors Community Bluetooth method A reported method reads Bluetooth broadcasts for Home Assistant. A project-owned compatibility list by sensor revision is not established.
Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers ratgdo Documented local MQTT and dry-contact control for compatible openers, including Security+ 2.0. Features depend on opener protocol and firmware.
Meta Portal displays Ava Pro A 2026 report describes firmware changes enabling ADB development and Portal use as a local smart-home interface. Compatibility by generation and feature is not established.
Belkin Wemo plugs Home Assistant Wemo integration A reported local-network route may preserve control. Confirm the exact plug model and current integration notes.
Lowe’s Iris sensors ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT The reported Zigbee route can avoid the original hub. A compatible coordinator is needed for ZHA; test the specific sensor and its exposed features.

The broad device names in this table are not compatibility guarantees. The source spanning all seven examples is a 2026 How-To Geek article; primary project documentation provides stronger detail for OpenNeato, ratgdo, ZHA, Zigbee2MQTT and Home Assistant’s Neato integration.

How the individual rescue paths work

First- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats

The reported service change for these generations took place in 2025: cloud connectivity and remote features ended, while local control remained possible. No Longer Evil is described as an open-source firmware and self-hosted replacement route that can restore remote temperature control and modes, including through Home Assistant.

Do not assume the route applies to every older thermostat. The available documentation does not establish exact supported revisions or a current flashing procedure, so verify those details before attempting a firmware change.

Neato Botvac D3–D7

OpenNeato describes a local replacement interface for Botvac D3–D7 robots. An ESP32 connects to the vacuum over UART, then provides a web interface over Wi-Fi without an external account or cloud dependency. The documented controls include status, cleaning, manual driving, maps and scheduling. Check the project’s target-model and wiring requirements for your robot.

This is separate from Home Assistant’s Neato integration: its documentation says new installations are unavailable because the Neato Developer Network is no longer available. That cloud-integration limitation does not describe OpenNeato’s independent local bridge.

SmartDry dryer sensors

The 2026 article reports that community reverse engineering of the sensor’s Bluetooth broadcasts can send information to Home Assistant without the discontinued cloud service. There is no project-owned source or precise hardware-revision compatibility list established here. Check that the current integration supports your sensor revision before buying or configuring additional equipment.

Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage-door openers

ratgdo is a control board that connects to compatible residential openers and offers local MQTT and dry-contact control with status feedback. Its project documentation includes supported Chamberlain, LiftMaster and Merlin openers, including Security+ 2.0, but available functions depend on the opener protocol and firmware.

Read the project’s installation instructions for the exact opener. Some dry-contact installations use reed switches, and MQTT control requires a broker. Treat the opener’s model and protocol as prerequisites, not details to resolve after installation.

Meta Portal displays

The source article reports that firmware changes in 2026 enabled ADB development and identifies Ava Pro as a way to turn a Portal into a local smart-home interface. Portal firmware documentation, a compatibility list and Ava Pro documentation were not established here. Do not assume the method works on every Portal generation or restores every original feature.

Belkin Wemo plugs

The article reports that Home Assistant’s Wemo integration can communicate with older plugs over the local network, potentially preserving local control after Belkin ended support for many products in early 2026. The available integration details do not establish exact model compatibility or setup steps. Check the current Home Assistant notes for your plug before relying on this route.

Lowe’s Iris sensors

The article describes Iris sensors as Zigbee devices that can connect to ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT without the original hub. ZHA requires a compatible Zigbee coordinator; its documentation recommends Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 for new setups. Zigbee2MQTT can expose devices through Home Assistant MQTT discovery when its Home Assistant setting and Home Assistant’s MQTT integration are enabled.

Neither route’s cited documentation establishes an exact Iris model-by-model compatibility list. Pair and test the particular sensor, then confirm that the information and functions you need are exposed.

Check these details before investing time or money

  1. Identify the exact hardware. Record the model and, where relevant, hardware revision, opener protocol or firmware. A family name alone may not distinguish supported from unsupported devices.
  2. Confirm the route is current. Look for the project’s current compatibility information and installation instructions. This matters especially for the Nest, SmartDry, Portal, Wemo and Iris routes, where detailed compatibility is not established here.
  3. List the extra setup. OpenNeato requires an ESP32-to-UART connection; ZHA needs a compatible Zigbee coordinator; ratgdo may involve opener wiring, and MQTT use requires a broker. The route may require more than installing an app.
  4. Decide which features matter. A local interface or control path is not necessarily a full replacement for the manufacturer’s app, cloud features or integrations. Check the project’s feature list against what you actually use.
  5. Test the result before depending on it. Verify local control, status reporting and any schedules or automations you rely on. For a garage opener, follow the project’s installation and testing guidance carefully.

Why these projects can extend a device’s useful life

Home Assistant describes itself as an open smart-home platform that runs on your own hardware and works with thousands of devices and brands. Its documentation says it is used in more than two million homes, though the cited summary does not specify a year for that figure. Home Assistant also says it had more than 21,000 contributors in 2024 and was GitHub’s top open-source project by contributors that year; those are Home Assistant’s own published figures.

The practical advantage is not that every old device gets a complete replacement service. It is that local interfaces and open protocols can sometimes keep a useful function available when a vendor account or cloud service disappears. The trade-off is setup and upkeep: community support is tied to specific hardware, and a local workaround may restore only part of the original experience.
