No: Buterin is not telling crypto holders to move their funds immediately. He urged the industry to take the possibility of AI-accelerated cryptographic advances seriously, while warning that rushed or misconfigured wallet migrations can cause losses. A fresh address may limit public-key exposure before it has signed a transaction, but the reports describe a precaution—not proof that wallet keys are about to be cracked.
What did Buterin warn crypto holders about?
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin responded to an October 7, 2026 warning from Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake. Drake urged the industry to plan calmly for “bunker mode”: a controlled migration of assets to fresh addresses in case AI-assisted mathematical advances weaken the cryptography behind wallet keys.
Drake described a break of ECDSA—the digital-signature system used by many crypto wallets—as a worst-case possibility within months rather than years. He proposed moving to fresh addresses whose public keys have not been exposed onchain, with sophisticated, large holders moving first. That is Drake’s warning and proposal, not an established capability or a consensus forecast. Buterin’s response was not to dismiss the underlying concern. He said, “I don’t recommend anyone scramble to move their funds to new wallets today,” and warned that “It’s very easy to lose funds from a misconfigured rushed upgrade, so … don’t rush anything.” The Block reported both remarks.

Should you move your crypto to a new wallet?
Buterin’s position was conditional, not a blanket instruction to migrate: keeping funds at an address that has never signed a transaction can be a good precaution if moving them is easy. Whether that applies to a particular wallet or transfer depends on the circumstances; the reports do not establish that a transfer is risk-free or that changing wallet devices addresses the cryptographic concern.
The choice involves two different uncertainties:
- Exposure: A fresh, unused address may keep its public key from being exposed until it signs a transaction.
- Execution risk: A hurried transfer or misconfigured upgrade can cause loss.
- Threat timing: Drake’s “months, not years” scenario is a worst-case warning, not a demonstrated deadline.
- Practicality: Buterin’s support for using an unused address depended on moving funds being easy.
These reports do not provide individualized transfer instructions. Do not treat unsolicited advice or a dramatic timeline as a reason to send funds hastily.

Can AI crack crypto wallets now?
The reporting does not establish that AI can currently crack wallet keys. CoinDesk said as of its October 8 report that no practical attack on Bitcoin or Ethereum wallet keys had been demonstrated. Drake’s concern is that AI-assisted mathematical progress could change the outlook; his proposed timeline remains a worst-case scenario, not evidence that an attack is underway.
Industry reactions also differ. The Block reported that Coinbase head of cryptography Yehuda Lindell said there was “no evidence whatsoever” that the longstanding assumptions behind elliptic-curve cryptography had weakened, while Dragonfly managing partner Haseeb Qureshi described Drake’s warning as “a very sober call.” Those are attributed assessments, not proof that the threat is settled either way. Why did Buterin mention lattice cryptography?
Buterin’s comments went beyond ECDSA and elliptic curves. He also warned that AI-assisted mathematical advances could affect lattice-based cryptography, including ML-DSA and fully homomorphic encryption. He favored conservative lattice parameters and hash-based constructions where possible.
That broader concern does not mean lattice-based systems have been broken. It reflects the possibility that advances in mathematics could matter across more than one family of cryptographic systems, making cautious design relevant alongside planning for wallet migration.
