1. Strengthen the email account that controls recovery
Use a unique password for your email account and turn on two-step verification. Add a passkey or authenticator app if the service offers one, and save recovery codes somewhere offline. Those codes can help if you lose access to your usual verification method, so do not leave the only copy inside the account they are meant to recover.
2. Use a password manager instead of relying on browser storage

3. Treat downloads as a security decision
Avoid running installers from unknown sources, including cracks, cheats, and supposed “free” mods. Get software from the maker’s official site rather than a link in a message, search result, or AI-generated answer. A convincing lookalike page can still be the wrong place to enter a password or download a file.
4. Keep a recovery route available
Store backup codes offline and make sure the account’s recovery options are current. A strong sign-in method is less useful if you cannot regain access after losing a device. What should I do if my account is hacked right now?
If you suspect an account has been taken over, use a device you believe is clean rather than continuing to sign in from a potentially infected one. Then secure the account and check for changes that could let the intruder back in.

- From a clean device, use the service’s official site or app to change the compromised account’s password. If you cannot sign in, use that service’s official account-recovery process.
- Sign out of active sessions on all devices, using the service’s account-security settings where available.
- Review account settings for unknown email-forwarding rules and remove any you did not create.
- Remove connected apps or third-party access you do not recognize or no longer use.
- Turn on two-step verification, add a passkey or authenticator app if available, and store backup codes offline.
- Change the password on any other account where you reused the compromised password, starting with your recovery email.
If the device itself may be infected, changing passwords on that device risks exposing the new credentials too. Use another device you trust for account recovery and avoid reinstalling suspicious downloads.
