If you want a large, upgradeable internal drive, the latest Mac mini may be the wrong buy. A September 2026 report says the M6 and M5 Pro models have NAND storage soldered to the logic board, making aftermarket internal upgrades unlikely. Treat the storage you choose at purchase as the practical limit, and consider an external drive if that built-in capacity will not cover your needs. 9to5Mac reported the change on September 22, 2026; Apple’s current-generation specifications and service documentation were not established in the sources available here.

Why storage-focused buyers should pause

The concern is not that a Mac mini cannot use extra storage. It is that buyers who want one compact desktop with a large internal drive should not count on adding capacity later. The latest-generation report describes soldered NAND, rather than the removable SSD module used in the 2024 design. That is secondary reporting, so verify the configuration offered for the exact model before ordering—but do not assume a later internal upgrade will be possible.

This distinction matters if you keep large media libraries, virtual machines, local project files, or archives on the computer itself. If those files can live on a separate drive, the Mac mini may still suit you; if you require all storage to be internal, choose carefully or consider another computer.

How much storage does the latest Mac mini have?

The available official specification in the cited sources covers the 2024 M4 and M4 Pro, not the reported M6 and M5 Pro. Apple listed these 2024 configurations on its Mac mini technical specifications page:

2024 model Starting storage Configuration options Rear Thunderbolt ports
M4 256GB SSD 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB Three Thunderbolt 4 ports, up to 40Gb/s
M4 Pro 512GB SSD 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, or 8TB Three Thunderbolt 5 ports, up to 120Gb/s

These are historical 2024 figures, not confirmed M6 or M5 Pro capacities. The Thunderbolt figures are Apple’s maximum interface ratings, not measured external-SSD speeds. Check Apple’s live product listing for current configurations and prices; the cited material does not establish either for the latest generation.

Can you upgrade the Mac mini SSD?

That depends on the generation, and “removable” does not mean a standard M.2 drive will fit. iFixit’s 2024 M4 SSD replacement guide says standard M.2 SSDs are incompatible because Apple integrates the storage controller into Apple silicon. Apple’s 2024 Mac mini repair manual includes an SSD Module procedure, but that service procedure does not establish M.2 compatibility or prove that the newer generation uses the same construction.

For the reported M6 and M5 Pro, the September 2026 report says NAND is soldered to the logic board and aftermarket internal upgrades are not supported. On that evidence, plan as though the selected capacity is fixed. Do not buy an M.2 module expecting it to be an internal upgrade, and do not generalize the M4 repair procedure to the newer models.

Can you use an external SSD with Mac mini?

Yes. A compatible USB or Thunderbolt storage device can provide separate space for media, archives, and project files. Match the drive and cable to the ports on your specific Mac mini. For speed-sensitive work, look for independent tests of the exact drive and connection: a port’s advertised link rate does not predict a drive’s real-world transfer results.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Apple also supports using USB or Thunderbolt storage as a macOS startup disk. Its external startup disk guidance recommends APFS, especially for SSDs. Apple silicon Macs still require a working built-in startup disk, so an external startup disk does not eliminate that requirement. Apple also notes that starting up externally changes how Background Security Improvements are delivered.

Choose between internal and external storage

  • Choose more internal capacity at purchase if you want a compact, self-contained setup without a separate drive. Confirm the exact current-generation options and prices on Apple’s product page before buying.
  • Add a USB-C external SSD if you want separate space for libraries, archives, or active project files and are comfortable with another device and cable on your desk.
  • Consider Thunderbolt storage if the high-bandwidth wired interface suits your workflow, but confirm compatibility and consult independent tests rather than treating the port rating as an SSD benchmark.
  • Consider an internal replacement only for a 2024 model if you understand the proprietary module and disassembly involved. Standard M.2 SSDs are not compatible, and this repair path should not be assumed to apply to the reported latest generation.

Before deciding, estimate how much data must stay on the Mac, what can live on a separate drive, whether portability or desk simplicity matters, and what performance your actual workload needs. The available sources do not provide a reliable price comparison or independent head-to-head SSD benchmark.
