Un dominio personal es un nombre registrado en el sistema DNS que puedes usar para identificar servicios asociados a tu identidad, como una web, un portafolio o direcciones de correo. Registrar el nombre no crea esos servicios: la página, el alojamiento y el correo se contratan o configuran por separado.
Qué es un dominio personal
Un dominio es un nombre legible que identifica un ámbito dentro del Sistema de Nombres de Dominio (DNS). Un dominio personal es, sencillamente, uno que registras para tu nombre, profesión, proyecto o marca personal. Por ejemplo, si registras ejemplo.com, puedes configurar un sitio en ejemplo.com, un subdominio como galletas.ejemplo.com o una dirección como galletas@ejemplo.com. Son usos posibles, no servicios que recibas automáticamente al registrarlo. ICANN explica cómo funciona el registro de nombres de dominio.
Qué incluye el dominio y qué no
El dominio es el nombre; no es una página web ni una URL completa. Una URL puede incluir el dominio y otros elementos, como la ruta de una página. Como indica ICANN: “Su nombre de dominio no es lo mismo que un sitio web o un Localizador Uniforme de Recursos (URL (Uniform Resource Locator)).”
Registrar un dominio tampoco proporciona por sí solo el alojamiento necesario para publicar una web ni un buzón de correo. Para que el nombre dirija a esos servicios hay que contratarlos o encontrarlos por separado y configurar los registros DNS correspondientes. Un registrador puede ofrecer administración DNS, pero eso no significa que incluya alojamiento web o correo. Los distintos participantes de la industria de nombres de dominio tienen funciones diferentes.

Cómo registrar un dominio con tu nombre
- Elige el nombre y la extensión. Piensa en cómo lo escribirán y recordarán otras personas, a quién quieres llegar y qué extensión encaja con tu propósito. No hay una extensión que sea la mejor para todos: disponibilidad, reglas y adecuación dependen del caso.
- Comprueba la disponibilidad y las reglas. Busca el nombre en un registrador que gestione la extensión que quieres. En los dominios genéricos sujetos al sistema de ICANN, los registradores acreditados ofrecen el servicio; también puede intervenir un revendedor. En extensiones territoriales, consulta las reglas del registro local, que pueden ser distintas. ICANN describe los distintos papeles en la industria.
- Compara las condiciones antes de pagar. Revisa el precio de alta y el de renovación, la duración del registro, las opciones de administración DNS, la disponibilidad y cobertura de la privacidad, y las condiciones para renovar o transferir el dominio. Las tarifas y condiciones comerciales dependen del proveedor y pueden cambiar.
- Completa el registro con datos válidos. Proporciona la información de contacto que exijan las reglas aplicables y comprueba que el titular indicado y el correo de recuperación sean los que quieres usar.
- Protege la cuenta y la renovación. Usa una contraseña exclusiva, activa la autenticación multifactor si está disponible, mantén al día los datos de recuperación y habilita el bloqueo de transferencia si el proveedor lo ofrece. Guarda la fecha de renovación y verifica que el método de pago siga vigente. ICANN recomienda elegir registradores acreditados cuando corresponda y ofrece orientación para registratarios. - Configura la web o el correo si los necesitas. Contrata o elige esos servicios y configura los registros DNS para conectarlos con el dominio. Sigue las instrucciones del proveedor de alojamiento o correo; registrar el nombre por sí solo no pone en marcha la web ni el buzón.
Privacidad y seguridad del dominio
La privacidad pública de los datos y la identidad contractual del titular son cuestiones distintas. Los registradores suelen ofrecer servicios de privacidad o representación (proxy), al registrar el dominio o después; también existen proveedores externos. La cobertura y las condiciones varían según la extensión y el proveedor, así que verifica exactamente qué datos se ocultan y cuáles pueden seguir siendo necesarios.
No introduzcas datos falsos para intentar ocultar tu información: usa datos de contacto válidos según las reglas aplicables y mantén segura la cuenta del registrador. La extensión más conveniente depende de tu propósito, audiencia, disponibilidad y condiciones; no existe una ganadora universal.
