Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library does not publish a forecast for how many more years it will run. Its U.S. page now says the program reaches one in six children under five; the often-quoted one-in-seven figure describes a 2024 milestone, not the current claim. Whether books keep arriving in a particular community depends in part on local partners securing money for books and postage.
How long will the Imagination Library continue?
There is no official end date or published duration forecast in the program’s reviewed materials. The program is ongoing, but that does not establish a guarantee of uninterrupted service everywhere. Its funding model makes the future of each local service area partly dependent on whether its partner can keep covering books and shipping.
The U.S. program page explains that local partners enroll children in the areas they serve and secure funding for books and postage. The central organization provides program infrastructure, administers the central book-order system, selects books, purchases them wholesale, and coordinates monthly mailings. A community seeking to start a program needs sustainable financial support for those costs and a nonprofit partner to qualify for special nonprofit mailing rates. Imagination Library: United States
Does it still reach one in seven U.S. children under five?
One in seven—about 14 percent—was the program’s stated U.S. milestone for 2024. The current U.S. page instead advertises that one in six children under five receives Imagination Library books. The page does not publish the newer claim’s denominator, calculation method, or measurement date, so it should not be converted into an exact number of children or treated as a precisely dated count. What do the latest worldwide totals show?
In a June 29, 2026 update, the organization reported more than 3.5 million books mailed monthly and over 325 million books gifted cumulatively. Both figures cover the program’s five countries; they are not U.S. enrollment totals. They show the program’s reported international scale, but do not establish how long any particular local program is funded to continue. Dolly Parton’s June 2026 update

What determines whether a local program can keep sending books?
The practical question is not simply whether the national program remains active. It is whether the partner serving a child’s area has funding to meet its local share of book and mailing costs. Families seeking a reliable answer should check with their local program about enrollment status and funding coverage.

- Which funders cover books and postage, and what amounts are committed?
- How many future months or years of costs are funded?
- What share of projected book and shipping expenses is covered?
- Is there a reserve or a plan to replace a funder if support ends?
- Is enrollment open, or has registration paused?
These questions follow from the local partners’ funding responsibilities; the reviewed sources do not provide a nationwide inventory of local commitments or reserves. Virginia’s 2025 annual-report listing indicates that state reporting tracks appropriations, expenditures, participating local programs, registered children, and books sent, but the listing itself does not provide those figures. A March 25, 2026 official update summarized an international study led by Dr. Claire Galea. It said more than 86,000 caregivers across five countries were followed over twelve months, comparing families receiving books with families not yet receiving them. According to that summary, after children received ten books, participating children were significantly more likely to demonstrate stronger early literacy skills, including vocabulary development and phonological awareness. The update also described more regular shared reading and caregiver-child interaction among enrolled families. Dolly Parton’s March 2026 study update
