Yes, dogs’ nighttime activity can coincide with their owners’ movement, and sharing a bed may affect measured sleep more than having a dog elsewhere in the bedroom. But the studies do not show that dogs routinely ruin their owners’ sleep: some participants reported little disturbance, and many had generally good sleep. The distinction matters: a dog moving in the room, a dog on the bed, and simply owning a pet are different situations—and the evidence does not make them interchangeable.
Does a dog in the bedroom affect sleep differently from a dog on the bed?
The clearest comparison comes from a 2017 study in Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Forty healthy adults without sleep disorders and their dogs were monitored for seven nights; adults wore accelerometers, and dogs wore validated dog accelerometers. The adults were 88% women, and each participant had one dog.
Across the sample, average human sleep efficiency—the proportion of time in bed spent asleep—was 81% ± 7%, and average total sleep time was 404 ± 99 minutes. Sleep efficiency was lower when the dog was on the bed than when the dog was in the room (P=.003). These are sample averages and a study finding, not a prediction for any individual. The authors concluded that people with one dog in the bedroom maintained good sleep efficiency, while the dog’s position on or off the bed made a difference. Read the study abstract.

This result supports a practical distinction, not a universal rule: bedroom-sharing and bed-sharing are not the same exposure. The study did not establish that every person sleeps worse with a dog on the bed, or that moving a dog off the bed will improve sleep for every household.

Why can recorded movement and perceived sleep disruption tell different stories?
Movement monitors register changes in motion; they do not, by themselves, prove that a person fully woke up, felt rested or unrested, or has a sleep disorder. That helps explain why objective movement findings can coexist with owners’ reports that their dogs rarely disturbed them.
In a 2020 actigraphy study, 12 adult women and their dogs were monitored for an average of 10 nights per participant, covering 124 nights. Dog movement tripled the likelihood of a human transition from a non-moving to a moving state, yet participants rarely reported that their dogs disrupted their sleep. The small, selected sample describes a possible pattern, not how often it occurs among dog owners generally. Read the open-access study.

A separate exploratory 2018 study followed five female Australian dog owners and their dogs for seven nights. Dogs were active for about 20% of the night. The reported chance of human wakefulness was 10.55% during dog activity, compared with 2.45% during inactivity; the authors characterized the overall reduction in sleep quality as measurable but relatively mild. With only five owner-dog pairs, those percentages should not be treated as a general estimate. Read the study abstract.
What do owners say about pets disturbing sleep?
A 2015 report surveyed and interviewed 150 consecutive patients at the Mayo Clinic Center for Sleep Medicine in Arizona. Seventy-four patients (49%) said they had pets. Among pet-owning patients, 20% described pets as disruptive, while 41% described them as unobtrusive or beneficial. These are perceptions from a sleep-clinic sample, not a prevalence estimate for all dog owners; the report also concerned pets generally, not dogs alone. Read the study abstract.

Perceived impact is useful, but it answers a different question from an accelerometer: a person may move when a dog moves and still not experience the movement as a meaningful sleep problem. Neither measure alone establishes a clinical sleep condition.
Does pet ownership generally mean better sleep?
Not necessarily, and ownership is not the same as sharing a bedroom or bed. A 2025 cross-sectional online survey of 1,256 people in the United States found worse reported sleep among non-pet owners than pet owners; participants who owned both a dog and a cat reported the best sleep among the four ownership groups. The authors reported mediation involving anxiety symptoms, perceived stress, light exposure, and sleep-wake timing.

Can dogs’ sleep be interrupted by their owners, too?
Yes. A 1993 observation study recorded nighttime behavior in 18 of 24 domestic dogs observed in urban settings. The dogs averaged 23 sleep-wake episodes over eight hours, with episodes averaging 16 minutes asleep and five minutes awake. Nine of 14 owners unwittingly disrupted their dogs’ sleep. The study offers context about dog sleep and the two-way nature of nighttime disturbance; it is not a modern estimate of how owners’ sleep is affected. Read the study abstract.

How to interpret the evidence for your own household
- Separate the sleeping arrangement from pet ownership. Evidence about pets in general does not tell you what will happen when a particular dog sleeps in your room or on your bed.
- Notice the impact, not movement alone. A dog’s movement may coincide with yours without you experiencing a meaningful disruption. Consider whether you feel rested and whether nighttime interruptions are a recurring problem.
- Keep the evidence in proportion. The actigraphy studies involved small, selected groups, while the clinic report relied on owner perceptions. They do not establish a single outcome for all dogs, owners, or households.
