To check whether your computer can use Wi‑Fi 6, identify its wireless adapter and look for 802.11ax support. On Windows, run netsh wlan show drivers and inspect Radio types supported. You also need a Wi‑Fi 6 router with the relevant band enabled. A Wi‑Fi 6 adapter does not, by itself, mean your computer can connect to 6 GHz: that band requires Wi‑Fi 6E or newer equipment and compatible software at both ends.
What to look for: 802.11ax
Wi‑Fi 6 is the consumer name for the 802.11ax wireless standard. If your adapter supports 802.11ax, it has Wi‑Fi 6 radio capability. That confirms the generation, but it does not establish every detail of compatibility: the computer, driver, operating system, router, and selected frequency band can affect which features are available.
Wi‑Fi 6 and Wi‑Fi 6E are not interchangeable when it comes to frequency bands. Wi‑Fi 6 products operate on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Wi‑Fi 6E adds access to 6 GHz; Wi‑Fi 7 equipment can also use that band. A device described only as Wi‑Fi 6 should not be assumed to support 6 GHz.
Check a Windows adapter in Command Prompt or Terminal
-
Open Command Prompt or Terminal.
-
Enter
netsh wlan show driversand press Enter. -
Find Radio types supported. If the list includes
802.11ax, the adapter reports Wi‑Fi 6/6E radio capability.#1 Best Overall

To identify the adapter model, right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, and note the wireless adapter’s name.
-
Check the computer maker’s support information for that exact model and compare the installed driver version and date with the current driver offered for your computer.
The command does not distinguish Wi‑Fi 6 from Wi‑Fi 6E or prove that 6 GHz is available. Confirm the adapter’s documented band support and the computer maker’s specifications. A driver can also filter out a frequency that the adapter hardware supports.
Confirm the router and band match
Your router, also called an access point, must support the Wi‑Fi generation and band you want to use. Check its documentation for Wi‑Fi 6 or 802.11ax support, the bands it broadcasts, and whether its Wi‑Fi 6 mode is enabled. For an 802.11ax access point, Intel recommends 5 GHz support and 11ax mode. If you cannot find the relevant setting, consult the router maker’s instructions rather than assuming the feature is active.

If the network does not appear in Windows, check that the router is broadcasting on a band the adapter and its driver allow. A missing network does not by itself show that the adapter lacks Wi‑Fi 6 support; band settings, driver behavior, and router configuration can also explain it.
Choose the band based on where you use the computer
| Band | Typical trade-off | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Generally reaches farther and passes through obstacles better, but is typically slower and more congested. | A compatible adapter and router broadcasting on 2.4 GHz. |
| 5 GHz | Typically offers higher speeds and more non-overlapping channels than 2.4 GHz, but has shorter range and is less effective through walls. | A compatible adapter and router broadcasting on 5 GHz. |
| 6 GHz | Can offer high performance with less congestion near the router, but has shorter range and is less effective through walls. | Wi‑Fi 6E or Wi‑Fi 7-capable equipment at both ends, supported operating-system and driver features, and availability under local regulations. |
These are general band characteristics, not a promise of a particular speed. Actual performance depends on the router, client configuration, surroundings, and internet service. Band availability and regulatory rules vary by location and device configuration, so check the computer and router documentation for your region before relying on 6 GHz.
Check operating-system and driver support
Hardware capability is only part of the result. Check Device Manager for the adapter’s exact name and driver, then use the computer maker’s current support guidance for your system. Microsoft’s Windows Wi‑Fi guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. For 6 GHz on Intel-based equipment, Intel’s guidance calls for Wi‑Fi 6E or Wi‑Fi 7 PC hardware, a matching router, and an updated Windows 11 installation.
For a Wi‑Fi 6 connection on 2.4 or 5 GHz, make sure the router is configured to allow 802.11ax and that the adapter driver supports the intended mode. If the adapter model’s documentation lists a band but Windows cannot see networks on it, check for a driver update and verify the router’s band and mode settings.

Can you upgrade the adapter?
Possibly, but an adapter’s Wi‑Fi generation does not establish that it will fit or work in a particular computer. Before buying an internal card, verify all of the following for the exact computer and adapter combination:
-
The computer has the required physical slot and interface, and its manufacturer supports that card.
-
The operating system and available drivers support the adapter’s features.

-
The router supports the same Wi‑Fi generation and desired band.
-
The band is permitted and available for the equipment in your region.
For example, Intel lists the AX203’s interface as M.2 CNVio2 and notes that feature availability varies by system. That illustrates why a model name alone cannot establish upgrade compatibility. Check the host computer maker’s documentation before purchasing. A USB Wi‑Fi adapter may be an option for some computers, but compatibility still depends on the adapter, operating system, drivers, and router.
