Use ordinary sentence case for accessible prose. Lowercase letters usually support word-shape recognition better than ALL CAPS in continuous text, but forcing every word into lowercase is not a universal accessibility fix. Keep capitals that carry meaning—sentence starts, headings, names, dates, the pronoun “I,” and abbreviations—and evaluate case together with type size, spacing, contrast, alignment, language, and assistive-technology behavior.
The practical answer
All-lowercase text is not automatically easier to read than sentence case. The strongest consistent finding is narrower: words set in lowercase are generally recognized more easily than words set in ALL CAPS when people read connected text. Lowercase preserves the ascenders and descenders that give words distinctive outlines, while capitals make many words occupy a similar rectangular band. That advantage does not mean a paragraph written entirely in lowercase is the best choice for every reader, language, interface, or screen reader.
For websites, help content, forms, and long instructions, sentence case is the safest default. It combines the word-shape benefits of lowercase with capitals that signal the beginning of a sentence and identify proper names, dates, institutions, abbreviations, and the pronoun “I.” Use all caps sparingly for short labels or warnings only when the design and audience testing support it; do not use it for paragraphs.

If a visual identity uses lowercase styling, treat that as a design choice to validate, not as an accessibility strategy. A lowercase logo or short brand label can coexist with sentence-case headings, link text, error messages, and documentation.

Why letter case changes reading
Word-shape recognition
Experienced readers do not identify every letter separately. They use familiar letter sequences, spacing, and the overall contour of a word to move quickly through a line. Lowercase has more varied vertical forms: letters such as h, l, and t rise above the x-height, while g, p, and y descend below it. In a line of lowercase words, those differences create visual landmarks.
ALL CAPS removes most of those landmarks because capitals are more uniform in height. Short uppercase labels can still be recognized, especially when they are familiar or separated by generous spacing, but a long uppercase paragraph demands more letter-by-letter analysis. Italics can create a similar problem when used for extended passages because slanted, joined shapes are harder to scan.
Capitalization also carries meaning
Case is not only decoration. A capital at the beginning of a sentence helps readers locate a new thought. Capitals distinguish a person, place, organization, day, month, or abbreviation from an ordinary word. Removing those signals can slow proofreading, make names look inconsistent, and create ambiguity in technical instructions. Sentence case therefore provides both visual variety and grammatical information.

What the available studies show
Highway-sign word recognition
Research by Garvey and colleagues in 1997 and 1998, summarized by the U.S. Access Board, found 12 to 15 percent greater word-recognition legibility for lowercase words than for uppercase words in highway-sign tasks. The same summary reports that uppercase and lowercase performed equally when the task required reading individual letters rather than whole words.
Those percentages describe a specific sign-reading setup, not a guaranteed improvement for every website visitor. Sign distance, font, contrast, viewing time, language, and whether a person reads a word or a single character all affect the result. Use the finding as evidence against long ALL-CAPS passages, not as a promise that converting every interface to lowercase will improve performance by 12 to 15 percent.
Thresholds in normal and impaired vision
Arditi and Cho’s 2007 experiment in Vision Research compared all-uppercase, all-lowercase, and mixed-case text with participants who had normal vision and participants with visual impairments. Lowercase thresholds were roughly 0.1 log unit higher than uppercase thresholds in that experiment. A threshold result concerns the visual conditions needed to detect or resolve text; it is not a universal reading-speed score or a prescription for a particular font.

Taken together, these studies support a cautious conclusion: lowercase can provide an advantage for some word-recognition tasks, while the best case treatment still depends on the task and presentation. Neither study establishes that all-lowercase prose is superior to sentence case for every disability group or digital interface.

What accessibility guidance recommends
Accessibility Standards Canada
Accessibility Standards Canada’s CAN-ASC-3.1:2025 guidance says capitalization should be used for the first letter of the first word of a sentence, heading, and title; for proper nouns; the pronoun “I”; days and months; and abbreviations. It also states: “Text in italic or ALL CAPS is harder to read than regular text, especially when the text is longer than a few words.”
GOV.UK accessible documents
GOV.UK guidance gives a direct rule: “Use sentence case. Avoid all caps text and italics.” Its related recommendations—simple language, short sentences, and a minimum 12-point sans-serif body size—show why case cannot be evaluated in isolation. A well-capitalized paragraph can still be inaccessible if it is tiny, dense, low-contrast, or full of jargon.

British Dyslexia Association
The British Dyslexia Association’s 2023 Dyslexia Style Guide advises avoiding capital or uppercase letters for continuous text and says lowercase letters are easier to read. It pairs that advice with 12–14 point sizing (or an equivalent digital size), appropriate spacing, suitable fonts, and text-to-speech considerations. The combination matters: changing case without changing cramped spacing or poor contrast leaves major barriers in place.
U.S. Web Design System
U.S. Web Design System guidance explains that all-capital words can flatten word contours and make recognition harder, particularly for people with dyslexia. It also warns that some screen readers may read capitalized text letter by letter. That behavior varies by screen-reader engine, settings, markup, and the word being spoken, so authors should not assume that lowercase will produce a predictable pronunciation everywhere.

American Library Association guidance treats capitalization as one part of readability alongside consistent spacing, left alignment, suitable fonts, and concise language. Sentence case, all lowercase, and all caps compared
| Approach | Word-shape recognition and speed | Grammar and name cues | Screen-reader considerations | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sentence case | Preserves lowercase contours in most words; generally easiest to scan in continuous prose. | Preserves sentence starts, proper nouns, dates, abbreviations, and “I.” | Usually gives assistive technology ordinary language to interpret; pronunciation still depends on the software and markup. | Body copy, headings, instructions, navigation labels, forms, errors, and link text. |
| All lowercase | Retains lowercase word shapes, but removing capitals can make sentence boundaries and names harder to find. | Erases distinctions that readers use to identify names, institutions, dates, and abbreviations. | No controlled evidence shows a universal comprehension benefit; pronunciation may change when acronyms or proper names lose their expected spelling. | Short decorative labels or a tested brand style, not a blanket rule for editorial content. |
| ALL CAPS | Flattens word contours and is harder to scan in longer passages; short words may remain legible. | Can obscure normal grammatical and name cues. | Some screen readers may spell capitalized text letter by letter, depending on software and settings. | Occasional short labels, alerts, or abbreviations when testing shows they work; avoid paragraphs. |
Dyslexia and low vision: what to prioritize
For readers with dyslexia
Lowercase continuous text is commonly recommended because varied word contours can support recognition. However, dyslexia is not one visual profile, and preferences differ. Use sentence case rather than mechanically forcing all lowercase, then let readers adjust text size, spacing, zoom, or a reading mode when your product supports those options. Avoid long uppercase passages, italics for emphasis across multiple words, decorative fonts, and tightly packed lines.
For readers with low vision
Case interacts with the size and contrast at which text can be seen. A person using magnification may benefit from lowercase contours, but a small, low-contrast lowercase font remains difficult. Provide a sufficiently large default, strong text-to-background contrast, comfortable line height, and text that reflows when enlarged. Do not rely on capitalization to communicate meaning that is unavailable in speech or when text is magnified.
For everyone
Short paragraphs, plain language, left alignment in left-to-right scripts, predictable headings, and meaningful link text reduce cognitive and visual load. These changes often produce a larger practical improvement than changing case alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow screen readers handle lowercase and capitals
Screen readers do not see a word exactly as a sighted reader does. They receive characters, words, semantic elements, and accessibility metadata, then apply pronunciation rules. Lowercase is not automatically “more accessible” in speech. A screen reader may pronounce an ordinary lowercase word normally, while an acronym, sequence of capitals, or unusual casing may be spelled out or pronounced differently. The exact result depends on the reader, operating system, language, voice, punctuation settings, and the markup around the text.
Write the word you want spoken, mark headings with real heading elements, and expose acronyms in a way that makes their meaning clear. Do not insert capitals as a visual-only signal for emphasis, and do not assume that changing a heading to lowercase will fix a navigation problem. Test representative content with the screen readers and languages your audience actually uses.
A practical writing standard for accessible interfaces
- Use sentence case for prose. Capitalize the first word of each sentence and heading, plus proper nouns, days, months, abbreviations, and the pronoun “I.”
- Reserve all caps for short, purposeful labels. If an alert or status label uses capitals, keep it brief, provide enough spacing, and verify it with users who have dyslexia or low vision.
- Do not force lowercase to imitate a brand voice. Keep brand styling in logos or short labels while using normal capitalization in instructions, headings, controls, and legal or safety content.
- Make headings semantic. Use a logical heading hierarchy so people scanning visually or by screen-reader navigation can find sections without relying on capitalization.
- Spell out unfamiliar abbreviations. Introduce the full term before an abbreviation and check how the intended screen readers pronounce it.
- Pair case decisions with typography. Check size, line height, word and letter spacing, contrast, font choice, paragraph length, and alignment at normal and enlarged zoom.
- Test real tasks. Ask representative users to find information, follow an instruction, complete a form, and identify a proper name; measure errors and hesitation rather than asking only which style looks nicer.
Typography settings that matter as much as case
- Size: GOV.UK recommends a minimum 12-point sans-serif body size for accessible documents; digital products should also remain usable when users enlarge text.
- Spacing: Give lines and words enough separation that adjacent shapes do not merge. The British Dyslexia Association’s guidance pairs case advice with spacing adjustments.
- Contrast: Lowercase cannot compensate for weak text-to-background contrast or text placed over a busy image.
- Alignment: Left-align left-to-right prose so readers can return to a consistent starting edge.
- Font: Choose a clear, familiar typeface and avoid decorative or overly condensed styles in long passages.
- Structure: Use short paragraphs, descriptive headings, lists, and concise sentences so readers can scan before committing to a line of text.
How to evaluate a lowercase design before launch
- Inventory the content. Separate long prose, headings, navigation, buttons, alerts, product names, acronyms, and decorative labels. A single casing rule rarely fits all of them.
- Create matched samples. Put the same content in sentence case, all lowercase, and all caps at the production font, size, spacing, and contrast.
- Check visual tasks. Ask users to locate a heading, distinguish two names, scan a paragraph for a date, and follow a multi-step instruction.
- Check assistive technology. Navigate headings and links with the screen readers used by your audience; listen for spelling, pronunciation, and unexpected pauses.
- Repeat at enlarged text sizes. Verify that reflow, zoom, and responsive layouts do not create clipping, overlap, or excessively long lines.
- Document exceptions. If lowercase remains for branding, record which components use it and keep editorial content on the sentence-case standard.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Mistake: converting every character to lowercase. Fix: restore capitals that carry grammatical, geographic, institutional, date, or abbreviation information.
- Mistake: using ALL CAPS for an entire warning. Fix: write a concise sentence-case warning, add a clear heading, and use color or an icon only as supporting—not sole—communication.
- Mistake: assuming lowercase solves dyslexia. Fix: offer readable sizing, spacing, font choices, plain language, and user-controlled presentation where possible.
- Mistake: treating screen-reader output as predictable from visual case. Fix: test actual combinations of browser, operating system, screen reader, language, and markup.
- Mistake: measuring appearance instead of task success. Fix: evaluate whether people can find, understand, and act on information with fewer errors.
Bottom line for site and content teams
Adopt sentence case as the default for accessible web writing. Lowercase word shapes generally outperform ALL CAPS for connected-word recognition, and major accessibility guidance consistently warns against uppercase or italicized continuous text. All-lowercase styling can be acceptable for a short, tested brand treatment, but it removes capitalization cues and has no established universal advantage for dyslexia, low vision, or screen-reader comprehension. The dependable accessibility gain comes from a complete system: meaningful case, readable typography, clear structure, adequate contrast, and testing with the people who will use the content.
