Yes, if the foil forms a sufficiently continuous conductive enclosure—but casually wrapping a phone is not a dependable way to block every wireless signal. Gaps, loose folds, seams, and openings can let radio signals through, and results vary by phone, radio band, service, and conditions.
Why aluminum foil can block radio signals
Aluminum is electrically conductive. When conductive material surrounds a device, it can shield the device from electromagnetic fields; this is the principle behind a Faraday cage. The more continuous the enclosure, the less opportunity radio energy has to pass through gaps or imperfect joins.
Vanderbilt University demonstrates the principle with a radio inside a metal cage topped with aluminum foil: reception declines. Iowa State University describes a similar demonstration in which a radio loses its signal inside a conducting cage. These are qualitative demonstrations of shielding, not controlled tests of every phone or wireless service. Vanderbilt University’s Faraday cage demonstration; Iowa State University’s Faraday cage demonstration.

Why a wrapped phone may still get a signal
Foil around a phone is not automatically a sealed shielding enclosure. A loose wrap, a small opening, or a poorly joined seam can leave a route for radio energy. In experiments described in an Eindhoven University of Technology thesis, a foil-covered box with an imperfect lid shielded unreliably, and a cable opening worsened attenuation. The setup illustrates why enclosure quality matters; it does not establish a universal result for phones wrapped by hand.

The same thesis reports that sufficiently precise wrapping, or multiple layers, attenuated signals enough that calls were not received in its tests. It also reports that 5 GHz Wi-Fi was not received in that setup. Those findings apply to the specific phones, enclosures, and test conditions described in the thesis—not to every device, band, or wrapping method. The sources do not establish a universal foil thickness, layer count, or signal-attenuation figure. Eindhoven University of Technology thesis, “Research Setup”.
Which connections might be affected?
Cellular calls and Wi-Fi were directly addressed in the Eindhoven experiments, with results dependent on the particular setup. GPS also relies on radio signals, but the FCC source on GPS disruption concerns active jammers that transmit interference; it is not a measurement of passive foil shielding. Do not treat it as evidence that a particular foil wrap will block GPS. FCC jammer advisory, DA 14-1785.

Do not rely on foil-wrapped phones for emergencies
If a phone is inside an effective conductive enclosure, it may be unable to connect over cellular or Wi-Fi while shielded. That makes foil wrapping unsuitable as a way to keep an emergency-ready phone available. Apple says supported iPhones in supported regions can use Emergency SOS via satellite outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, and instructs users to maintain a clear line of sight to the sky. A foil enclosure conflicts with relying on that connection because it shields the phone and obstructs the required view. Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite guidance.
Passive foil is not an active jammer
Foil is a passive material: it does not transmit an interfering signal. The cited FCC advisories address active jamming devices, which intentionally transmit interference; the FCC warns that jammer use is prohibited in the United States and can disrupt emergency communications. Those advisories do not determine the legality of ordinary foil wrapping. FCC guidance on cell, GPS, and other jammers, DA 11-250.

What to take away
- A conductive enclosure can weaken radio signals, and aluminum foil can contribute to one.
- Continuity matters: loose folds, seams, or openings can make shielding unreliable.
- Demonstrations and specific experiments do not prove that a hand-wrapped phone will lose every connection.
- Keep a phone you may need in an emergency accessible and able to connect; do not count on foil as a reliable signal-blocking method.
