Yes, 8.3 filename aliasing can affect performance in some situations, but Microsoft does not publish a speedup figure or say that every Windows PC will benefit from disabling it. The feature keeps optional short-name aliases for compatibility. Whether aliases are being created depends on system and volume settings, so check your configuration before changing it.
What 8.3 filename support does
The legacy 8.3 format uses a base name of up to eight characters and an optional extension of up to three. On a filesystem that supports long filenames, Windows can store a short alias alongside the full name. The long filename remains the file’s ordinary name; the alias exists for older software or other compatibility needs. Microsoft describes the format and its restrictions in its 8.3 filename specification.
An alias may look like PROGRA~1, but you cannot assume that a particular file has one or that its alias follows a predictable pattern. Microsoft’s file-naming documentation describes how aliases may be generated or disabled and identifies GetShortPathName as the API for requesting a short path. Applications should use supported path APIs rather than rely on an alias always existing.

Can creating short-name aliases slow Windows down?
Microsoft’s NTFS overview explicitly identifies performance as a reason administrators may selectively disable 8.3 aliasing on individual NTFS volumes. That establishes a legitimate performance tradeoff, not a guaranteed or noticeable slowdown on every computer.

The official documentation reviewed does not quantify the effect, provide a benchmark, or promise that disabling aliases will improve a typical PC. Maintaining an extra name may involve filesystem work and metadata, particularly when many files are created; that is a plausible explanation for why the setting can matter, not a measured performance result. There is no basis here for promising faster boot times, games, or everyday use.
Check whether Windows is creating aliases
Do not infer the setting from the Windows version or installation history. Microsoft notes that volumes formatted by Windows Server 2008 R2 and later have short-name creation disabled by default, while the system volume remains enabled for application compatibility. Those formatting defaults do not establish the current state of every upgraded or customized computer.

Choose a setting that fits your compatibility needs
Windows supports system-wide modes as well as per-volume behavior. The right choice depends on whether software or workflows on the affected volume require short aliases.
| Configuration | What it means | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Creation enabled system-wide | Windows creates short names across volumes. | Compatibility is more important than avoiding alias creation. |
| Creation disabled system-wide | Windows does not create new short names across volumes. | You have checked relevant applications and do not need new aliases. |
| Per-volume behavior | Alias creation can be controlled separately for each volume. | You need different settings on different volumes. |
| Disabled except on the system volume | Creation remains available on the system volume and is disabled on other volumes. | You want to retain system-volume compatibility while disabling creation elsewhere. |
Microsoft documents the system-wide modes and per-volume controls. Per-volume toggles require the system’s default mode to allow per-volume behavior. Consult the fsutil reference for the current command syntax before setting a mode.

Disabling new aliases is not the same as removing existing ones
Changing creation behavior affects aliases Windows may create in the future. The separate strip operation removes existing aliases; removal can be permanent. Microsoft warns that applications may fail unexpectedly if registry keys refer to aliases that are removed, including failures when uninstalling software.
If you are considering removal, use the documented scan operation to find registry keys that might be affected, then review the findings and compatibility implications before proceeding. Do not treat stripping as a routine performance tweak: Microsoft’s documentation establishes the potential risk, but does not establish that removing existing aliases will deliver a particular speed improvement.

- Query first: Check the system default and each volume you are considering.
- Check compatibility: Identify whether installed applications or workflows depend on short paths before disabling creation.
- Change only what you need: If compatible, choose the documented system-wide setting or configure an individual volume when per-volume mode is enabled.
- Handle existing aliases separately: Before using
