There is no verified evidence that turning off USB4 power management raises active transfer speeds from 500 Mbps to 2,400 Mbps. Microsoft documents USB4 power management as a way to put idle routers to sleep; its documentation does not say that the feature throttles active file transfers. Treat those numbers as an unverified report, not an established USB4 performance result.
What USB4 power management does
USB4 power management is designed to reduce power use when tunneled devices are idle. Microsoft says USB4 host routers must support sleep entry and exit, and that the connection manager can initiate sleep when tunneled devices are idle. Windows can identify and power-manage an associated USB4 host router through ACPI port mapping. Microsoft’s USB4 power-management requirements describe this idle-state behavior, not a throughput limit during an active copy.
Windows’ USB4 connection manager manages the USB4 domain, including bandwidth and power states. Microsoft says Windows-provided connection-manager drivers are required starting with Windows 11. The connection-manager documentation does not identify disabling power management as a way to increase transfer speed.
What the 500 Mbps and 2,400 Mbps claim establishes
The figures in the headline have not been independently verified by the available sources. The host computer, USB4 port, drive or enclosure, operating-system build, exact setting, benchmark, workload, and test conditions are not established. The units also need confirmation: Mbps means megabits per second, while MB/s means megabytes per second. They are not interchangeable, so do not silently reinterpret the reported values.

Microsoft describes USB4 link and bandwidth-allocation figures, but those are not real-world SSD copy-speed measurements. Its design documentation says up to 90 percent of USB4 link bandwidth may be explicitly allocated to specified tunneled USB 3.x isochronous, PCIe, and DisplayPort traffic. For example, Microsoft gives 10, 20, and 40 Gbps link rates and corresponding allocations of 9, 18, and 36 Gbps. Those figures describe link allocation, not a guaranteed file-transfer rate. Microsoft’s USB4 design details do not substantiate the headline’s before-and-after result.
Check the connection before changing power settings
A slow USB4 SSD transfer can have causes other than power management. Microsoft recommends using the cable supplied with the device or a certified USB4 cable, connecting to a port that supports USB4, and connecting directly or through a USB4 dock. A non-USB4 host port, unsupported cable, or non-USB4 dock can limit functionality. These checks do not prove the cause of a particular slow result, but they help confirm that the connection supports the intended mode. Microsoft’s USB4 troubleshooting guidance covers these compatibility checks.

- Confirm that the computer’s specific port supports USB4; a USB-C connector alone does not establish USB4 support.
- Use the supplied cable or a certified USB4 cable.
- Connect the device directly, or verify that any dock in the chain supports USB4.
- Check that the external drive, enclosure, and storage workload are suitable for the speed you are measuring.
How to test whether the setting matters on your PC
A valid before-and-after test should change only the power-management setting. Keep the computer and USB4 port, drive and enclosure, cable, file set and size, benchmark and settings, Windows build, power source, and background activity the same. Record the exact setting changed and the units shown by the test.

- Run the same transfer or benchmark several times with the setting unchanged, and record every result.
- Change only the USB4 power-management setting. Record its exact name and location so the change can be reproduced.
- Repeat the same runs under the same conditions. Compare the median or range, not just the fastest result from either group.
- Restore the original setting if the comparison shows no repeatable improvement or causes unwanted behavior.
This method can show whether the change appears to affect a particular system and workload. It cannot establish that disabling USB4 power management improves transfer speeds on other computers or devices.

What other reports do—and do not—show
A Reddit discussion about an ASM2464PD M.2 enclosure describes Windows USB4/Thunderbolt 4 behavior and connection instability. One participant attributed a personal write-speed change to enabling device write caching, but that is a different setting and a different report; it does not corroborate the USB4 power-management claim. The thread also mixes “Mb/s” and “MB/s,” so its figures should not be used to infer the headline’s units. The discussion is anecdotal, not a controlled comparison.
