No—playing the viral sound is not a proven way to fix a wet smartphone. It may help move water out of some speaker grilles, but the reported test involved only four phones, was not controlled, and produced mixed results. It does not show that the sound dries a phone’s internal components or makes it safe to charge.
What the 45-million-view claim actually says
HotHardware reported on August 30, 2024, that a two-minute YouTube video titled “Sound To Remove From Phone Speaker ( GUARANTEED )” had 45 million views. That is the view count reported at the time, not a current total. The video’s description claimed its sound would eject water from a phone speaker and “completely remove water” from mobile speakers. “Guaranteed” is the uploader’s claim, not an established result. HotHardware’s report describes an informal test, not proof that the video fixes wet phones.
Does the sound work?
In the test HotHardware reported, the sound appeared to work well on a Google Pixel 7 Pro, somewhat on an iPhone 13 and Pixel 3, and not on a Nokia 7.1. The article explicitly described the test as “not a perfectly controlled test.” Four phones and varied outcomes cannot establish a reliable success rate or show that the method works across phone models.

What it might do
HotHardware reported that The Verge spoke with iFixit repair expert Carsten Frauenheim, who described the sound as “just a specific oscillating tone that pushes the water out of the speaker grilles.” Frauenheim also expressed uncertainty about how well a third-party version would work. This explanation is limited to water near speaker grilles; it is not evidence that a tone dries a phone’s internals, fixes liquid damage, or clears a wet charging port.

How to think about the method
| Approach | What it addresses | What the available evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Playing the sound | Potentially water at speaker grilles | One informal, four-phone test reported mixed results; no controlled efficacy finding or success rate is available. HotHardware |

What to do if your phone gets wet
Use the instructions for your specific make and model; the steps below summarize guidance for Google Pixel phones and iPhones, not every smartphone.
If you have a Google Pixel
- Lift the phone out of the water, turn it off, and dry the outside with a soft cloth.
- Place it on a flat surface and let it dry at room temperature. Google’s Pixel water-damage guidance says water damage is not covered by warranty and links to repair options.
- If the USB-C port or cable is wet, unplug charging accessories, turn off the phone, and let it dry at room temperature. Do not put anything into the port. Follow Google’s instructions for “Unplug charger” or “Liquid or debris” messages.
If you have an iPhone with a liquid-detection alert
- Unplug the cable and do not reconnect it until both the iPhone and cable are completely dry.
- Leave the phone in a dry area with airflow. Apple says drying the connector can take up to 24 hours.
- Do not use external heat or compressed air, insert objects into the connector, or put the iPhone in rice. If the alert keeps recurring, Apple says service may be needed.
A sound aimed at speaker grilles is not a substitute for these precautions, particularly when a charging port is wet. Avoid charging until the relevant manufacturer guidance says it is safe.
