No Dell source cited here establishes 300 GB/s of storage throughput for the PowerEdge R7725xd. Dell’s specifications describe a 2U, storage-dense server that supports up to 24 2.5-inch U.2 Gen5 NVMe drives; the 300 GB/s figure belongs to memory bandwidth measured on a different server. The distinction matters: drive count and interface generation describe the platform, not its measured end-to-end storage speed.

Where the 300 GB/s claim comes from

Dell’s historical article about a two-socket PowerEdge C6525 reports approximately 270–300 GB/s of memory bandwidth for that system using AMD Rome processors. That is a different server and a different performance measure; it is not evidence of R7725xd storage throughput. Dell’s C6525 and AMD Rome article describes the earlier result and its system context.

Memory bandwidth measures the rate at which a processor platform can move data to and from memory under a particular test. Storage throughput measures data transfer to or from storage devices, and depends on drives, configuration, workload, and measurement method. Neither figure can be substituted for the other, and a result from one server model cannot be assigned to another.

What the R7725xd specifications establish

Dell’s technical guide describes the R7725xd as a 2U rack server with two AMD EPYC 9005-series processor sockets, 24 DDR5 DIMM slots, and support for up to 24 2.5-inch U.2 Gen5 NVMe drives. Dell’s Australia product page lists up to 3 TB of memory for its stated configuration. These are platform capabilities, not a guarantee that every system ships with that amount of memory or all 24 drives installed.

What Dell’s 1.6 TB/s figure means

Dell’s Exascale specifications describe one R7725xd-based node with two AMD EPYC 9455 processors, 96 total cores, 768 GB of DDR5-6400 memory, and 24 U.2 Gen5 NVMe drives. Dell gives that specific configuration an aggregate memory-bandwidth figure of 1.6 TB/s. It is a memory figure for the stated deployment, not a storage-throughput result and not a universal specification for every R7725xd.

The Dell Exascale specifications provide the configuration context. Its processor, memory, drive selection, networking, software version, and stated bandwidth belong together; the number should not be detached from those details.

What 24 Gen5 NVMe bays do—and do not—tell you

Support for 24 U.2 Gen5 NVMe drives makes the R7725xd a storage-dense platform in a 2U chassis. But the drive count and PCIe generation alone do not establish usable capacity or workload throughput. Results vary with the installed and qualified drives, storage configuration, workload, and test method. The sources cited here do not provide a measured R7725xd storage-throughput result of 300 GB/s.

For an actual deployment or server comparison, assess the full configuration rather than an interface headline:

  • Drive form factor, number installed, qualification, and usable capacity.
  • NVMe generation and PCIe topology, including how devices connect within the system.
  • Processor and memory configuration.
  • Network bandwidth where data moves between the server and other systems.
  • Benchmark workload and methodology, including whether the result is a device, server, or end-to-end measurement.
  • Regional availability, support, and price for the exact configuration.

Dell positions the R7725xd for data analytics, high-performance computing, and high-bandwidth object-scale workloads. Those are vendor-described use cases, not independent benchmark conclusions. Dell’s Australia page calls it a storage-dense server with storage and networking performance, but that marketing description does not quantify throughput.
