Yes. As of October 16, 2026, Subnautica 2 supports cross-platform multiplayer, full gamepad input (including Xbox controllers), and Steam Deck play. Steam currently labels it Steam Deck Verified, while the developer says controller input is optimized for Steam Deck and ROG Ally devices.
The game launched in Early Access on Steam and Game Preview on Xbox on May 14, 2026. Those development programs matter: performance, controls, multiplayer behavior, and even the Deck verification status can change in later updates.

What is supported right now?
The current platform information gives three clear answers:

Steam describes the cooperative mode as a single-player experience that can optionally be played online with up to three friends. That means a host and as many as three additional players can occupy one session, for a maximum of four people.

How Subnautica 2 cross-play works
Steam or PC players can join Xbox friends
The Steam store lists Cross-Platform Multiplayer. Xbox Wire’s May 4, 2026 announcement also says the game supports cross-platform play and introduces multiplayer. In practical terms, a player using the Steam/PC version can play with a friend on Xbox, provided both are using the supported online multiplayer build.
Official wording also refers to playing with friends “on other platforms.” The documented examples establish Xbox-to-PC/Steam play; they do not establish support for PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, or every possible PC storefront. Do not assume an unlisted platform can join until its own store or the developer confirms it.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Inviting a friend
Unknown Worlds programmer Sam Dark described the process as opening the game menu and inviting the friend. The quoted explanation is: “You can play with your Xbox friends, as well as your friends on other platforms, as easily as opening the menu and inviting them to your game.”
Because the game is still evolving, labels and menu placement may change. The reliable workflow is to:
- Launch the same current version of Subnautica 2 on each platform.
- Have one player create or load the cooperative session.
- Open the in-game multiplayer or session menu.
- Use the available invite control to select the friend on the other supported platform.
- Have the invited player accept the invitation and confirm that the session shows the expected host and player count.
The source material does not specify a separate cross-platform account, friend-code system, or additional subscription requirement, so those details should be checked in the current platform prompts rather than guessed from other games.
How many players can join?
Steam’s listing says the cooperative experience can be played with up to three friends. Counting the host, that is four players in one online session. “Up to three friends” is a ceiling, not a promise that every activity or future update will support a larger group.

Cross-play connects supported platforms; it does not make the editions identical in every respect. Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview are separate distribution programs, and a patch can arrive at a different time or expose different platform-specific behavior. If an invite fails after an update, compare the build information and current store notices on both systems before assuming that cross-play has been removed.
Controller support and Xbox gamepads
Full gamepad support is official
The Subnautica 2 Help Center, updated April 16, 2026, states: “Yes, Subnautica 2 offers full controller (gamepad) support, including Xbox controllers.” That covers the central question for anyone who would rather play without a mouse and keyboard.
Xbox Wire says the team spent substantial time making the Xbox controller the best experience and describes it as “one of the primary input methods.” An Xbox Wireless Controller is therefore a straightforward choice for PC players who want the same style of input used on Xbox. The documentation confirms compatibility, but it does not publish a complete button map in the available material; expect the exact labels and bindings to follow the current game build.

Using a controller on PC
For a Steam installation, connect the gamepad before launching or while the game is running, then verify that the title detects it in its current input or controls screen. If the game continues to show keyboard prompts, check that the controller is recognized by the operating system and that Steam has not selected an unexpected controller profile. The precise menu names can change during Early Access, so use the labels shown by your installed build.
When switching between keyboard and gamepad, watch for on-screen prompts. A game can accept both devices while displaying the icon for whichever input was used most recently. That behavior is normal and is not evidence that controller support is missing.
Using a controller on Xbox
Xbox players use the console’s standard controller path, with no separate PC configuration step. The Xbox-focused design work reported by Xbox Wire means the controller is not merely an emergency fallback; it is intended as a primary way to play. You should still check the current control settings after patches, because an Early Access build may adjust sensitivity, bindings, or menu navigation.
Steam Deck compatibility
What “Verified” means for this game
Steam currently marks Subnautica 2 as Steam Deck Verified. That is the strongest of Steam’s Deck compatibility labels and indicates that the current store-tested build meets Valve’s requirements for the handheld’s controls, display behavior, and general compatibility at the time of evaluation.
The developer’s Help Center independently says controller input is optimized for Steam Deck and the ROG Ally series. Together, the store label and the developer statement provide stronger evidence than controller support alone: the game is intended to be played with handheld controls, not simply launched with an external keyboard.

What Verified cannot promise
Verified is tied to a particular build and does not freeze the game’s future behavior. Subnautica 2 remains in Steam Early Access, so a substantial update can affect frame-rate consistency, battery use, graphics settings, loading behavior, or control prompts. A later Steam review can also change the compatibility badge.
For that reason, treat Verified as a current compatibility signal rather than a permanent performance guarantee. If a patch causes a problem, recheck the Steam store badge and the developer’s latest support information before changing operating-system settings or buying accessories.
A sensible Deck setup check
- Update SteamOS and the game before starting a new multiplayer session.
- Confirm that Steam still shows the current Deck compatibility label on the game’s store page.
- Launch with the built-in controls first, since the developer specifically optimizes for handheld input.
- Open the game’s control settings and verify that the prompts correspond to the buttons you intend to use.
- Test loading a save and entering a session before inviting friends, especially after a major game update.
This sequence separates a general launch problem from a multiplayer problem. If the game launches and the controls work locally but an invitation fails, investigate the session and build state rather than treating the Deck itself as unsupported.
Choosing between Steam, Xbox, and Steam Deck
The best choice depends less on whether the game supports the feature and more on how you want to access it. The following comparison uses the currently documented platform facts.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Setup | Cross-platform multiplayer | Controller position | Compatibility status | Release channel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam on Windows PC | Steam lists cross-platform multiplayer; Xbox-to-PC play is documented. | Full gamepad support, including Xbox controllers. | Not a Steam Deck status question unless the same Steam build is used on Deck. | Early Access from May 14, 2026. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Xbox Wire documents cross-platform play with Xbox friends and players on other platforms. | Xbox controller is treated as a primary input method. | Console compatibility is provided through the Xbox Game Preview release. | Game Preview from May 14, 2026. |
| Steam Deck | Uses the Steam version; Steam’s listing includes cross-platform multiplayer. | Developer says Deck controller input is optimized. | Steam currently labels the game Verified. | Steam Early Access, subject to change during development. |
| ROG Ally series | Availability follows the PC version and its supported multiplayer systems. | Developer says controller input is optimized for the Ally series. | No separate Steam Deck verification label applies. | PC release channel; current build and storefront determine access. |
The table distinguishes a platform’s input experience from its release channel. A Deck owner is still playing the Steam build, while an Xbox owner is using Game Preview. That difference can matter when updates or compatibility reviews are published.

Release status, access, and timing
Xbox Wire announced the Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC Game Preview launch for May 14, 2026. The announcement also states that the game is available through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Steam lists the same date for its Early Access release.
Early Access and Game Preview mean the game is playable but unfinished. Features can be expanded, redesigned, or temporarily disrupted while development continues. Multiplayer capacity, controller behavior, graphics performance, and Deck verification should therefore be evaluated against the current build, not against a launch-day assumption.
If you are deciding when to buy or join through a subscription, distinguish access from maturity. The documented launch channels provide a way to play now; they do not represent a final-release feature lock or a promise that every planned system is complete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshooting cross-play and controller problems
The friend cannot be invited
- Confirm that both players are running the current game version rather than one waiting for an update.
- Check that the host has loaded a session capable of accepting another player.
- Reopen the in-game menu and look for the current invite control; Early Access labels can move.
- Check the Steam or Xbox store page for a service notice or changed multiplayer information.
The available documentation does not identify a single error code or a universal fix. If the invite option is absent after both players update, record the platforms and build numbers when contacting support.
The controller is connected but prompts are wrong
- Reconnect the controller and relaunch the game so input detection starts cleanly.
- Verify that the operating system or console recognizes the device before opening the title.
- Review the game’s current control settings and restore the intended layout if a profile changed.
- On handheld PCs, begin with the built-in controls and avoid adding a custom remapping layer until native input is confirmed.
Full controller support means the game accepts gamepad input; it does not mean every third-party remapper, dock, or unusual controller profile will present identical prompts.
The Deck experience changes after an update
First check whether Steam still shows Verified and whether the developer has posted a current support note. Because the title is in Early Access, a regression can be temporary and may be corrected in a later patch. Testing the game locally before joining a four-player session helps determine whether the issue affects the handheld generally or only online play.
Which setup should you choose?
Choose Steam PC when your group is mixed-platform
Steam is a practical choice if at least one friend plays on Xbox and another plays on PC. The documented cross-platform system is designed for that kind of session, and full Xbox-controller support lets a PC player use a familiar gamepad.

Choose Xbox when console-first control is your priority
Xbox is the natural fit for players who want the controller experience the development team identified as a primary input method. Game Preview access and the May 14, 2026 launch channel are part of the Xbox version’s current status.
Choose Steam Deck for portable play
Deck is the strongest documented handheld option because Steam currently labels the game Verified and the developer explicitly optimizes controller input for it. Keep the Early Access qualification in mind if stable performance is more important than portability.
Choose a shared platform when reliability matters most
Cross-play is supported, but using the same platform can reduce variables when troubleshooting invitations, updates, or store-specific behavior. That is a practical reliability choice, not a requirement: the documented system is intended to connect supported PC and Xbox players.
Bottom line
Subnautica 2 meets all three requirements in the question as of October 16, 2026: cross-platform multiplayer is available, full controller support includes Xbox gamepads, and Steam lists the game as Steam Deck Verified. Cooperative sessions support a host plus up to three friends. Because the game remains in Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview, verify the current store metadata and patch information whenever a major update changes how your platform behaves.
