Yes—Starfield supports cloud-save syncing between an Xbox console and the Xbox App for PC when both use the same account. Steam is different: Bethesda documents a process to import an Xbox Cloud save into the Steam version, but the available guidance does not establish continuous, automatic two-way cross-save between Steam and Xbox.
The short answer depends on which PC version you use
“PC” covers two separate Starfield storefronts with different save behavior. The Xbox App for PC follows the Xbox ecosystem’s cloud-save synchronization. Steam has a documented Xbox Cloud save import workflow. Treating both as identical can lead to overwritten progress, missing saves or the mistaken expectation that a Steam save will automatically appear on an Xbox console.

Xbox console and Xbox App for PC: supported cloud syncing
Bethesda’s support guidance describes Xbox console and Xbox App for PC players using cloud data that can synchronize between the two platforms. The essential requirement is account identity: the same account must be signed in on the console and in the Xbox App for PC. Bethesda’s wording is, “Ensure you are signed into the same account on both console and on Xbox App for PC.”

What this lets you do
- Play Starfield on an Xbox Series X|S console.
- Open the Xbox App for PC version on a Windows PC using the same account.
- Allow the cloud save to finish syncing before continuing on the other device.
- Return to the console and load the updated save after the PC session has uploaded it.
This is the clearest supported cross-device path in the available documentation. It is best described as Xbox cloud-save sync, not as a generic promise that every PC storefront shares saves with Xbox.
How to switch from Xbox to the Xbox App for PC
- Check the account. Confirm that the Xbox console and Xbox App for PC are signed in with the same account. A different account will not expose the expected cloud data.
- Finish your console session normally. Save in Starfield and close the game so the latest data can upload.
- Wait for synchronization. Give the Xbox cloud service time to complete before launching on the PC. Starting immediately can make the newest save appear to be missing while the upload is still in progress.
- Launch Starfield from the Xbox App for PC. Select the cloud save when the game presents the available saves.
- Verify the result before playing further. Check the character and save time so you know you opened the intended file.
How to return from PC to Xbox
- Make a fresh manual save on the PC. Bethesda specifically recommends creating a manual save when a sync issue persists.
- Close Starfield on the PC. This gives the app an opportunity to finish uploading the new save.
- Wait briefly. Do not launch the console version immediately if the cloud upload is still processing.
- Open Starfield on the Xbox console. The console should trigger another cloud check and present the updated save.
- Load deliberately. Compare the save’s timestamp or in-game progress before confirming, particularly if several autosaves are listed.
Steam: import, not proven continuous cross-save
Bethesda also documents importing an Xbox Cloud save into the Steam release. The wording matters: an import is a transfer into Steam, whereas synchronization implies an ongoing service that keeps both versions aligned. The support material reviewed does not establish automatic, continuous or two-way cross-save between Steam and Xbox.
The documented Steam route
- Use the Xbox App for PC if needed. If the console save is not ready for import, install or use the Xbox App for PC and sign in with the Xbox account that contains the save.
- Load the console save through the Xbox App for PC. This step is Bethesda’s suggested way to make the Xbox Cloud save available when a direct Steam import does not work.
- Close the Xbox App for PC version after the save is loaded. Allow the cloud data to finish updating.
- Open the Steam version of Starfield. Use its Xbox Cloud save import option as provided by the game.
- Confirm the imported file in Steam. Check the character, location and save time before replacing or continuing a Steam save.
This procedure is a one-way-style entry point into the Steam release as described by Bethesda. It should not be presented as a guarantee that later Steam saves will automatically return to Xbox, or that every device will remain synchronized after the import.
February 20, 2025 Steam fix
Bethesda says an update released on February 20, 2025 fixed an issue that could prevent Xbox Cloud saves from loading in the Steam release. If the problem remains after that update, Bethesda’s suggested path is to load the Xbox console save using the Xbox App for PC and then import the cloud save into Steam.
The fix and workaround describe a specific loading problem; they do not turn the Steam route into universal cross-save. They also do not guarantee identical behavior for every game version, save, add-on entitlement or mod configuration.

Troubleshooting Xbox App for PC synchronization
When the console and Xbox App versions disagree, work through the checks in order rather than repeatedly launching both versions.
1. Verify account identity
Sign out and back in if necessary, then confirm the account shown on the Xbox console and in the Xbox App for PC is exactly the same. Bethesda identifies this as the first requirement.

2. Create a manual save on the platform with the newest progress
If one platform shows your latest session and the other does not, load the game on the platform that has the correct progress and create a manual save. Manual saves make it easier to identify the intended file among autosaves.
3. Close the game and allow cloud processing
Exit Starfield and wait briefly. A save can be present locally while the cloud copy is still uploading, so switching devices immediately can expose an older file.
4. Trigger a new sync on the other device
Launch Starfield on the second platform after the wait. The other device should check the cloud data and refresh its save list.

5. Protect the correct file

The Xbox Cloud save does not appear in Steam
First make sure the Xbox Cloud copy is current by loading the console save through the Xbox App for PC. Close that version and allow synchronization to finish, then retry the import in Steam. This is Bethesda’s remaining suggested route after the February 20, 2025 fix.
The import succeeds but progress differs
Check that you imported the intended character and save rather than an older cloud entry. Compare the save time and in-game location. Avoid assuming that a successful import means all later saves will synchronize back to Xbox.
Add-ons or mods behave differently
The available support guidance does not establish that every save element, add-on entitlement or mod configuration will work identically after an Xbox-to-Steam import. A save can therefore load while associated content behaves differently. Keep the original Xbox save intact and test the imported file before treating Steam as your only copy.
