No. SPF is not a reliable multiplier for how long you can stay in the sun without burning. A 2017 analysis by Brian Diffey and Uli Osterwalder argues that laboratory SPF labels may overstate the protection expected in natural sunlight. Its estimates are modeled, not field measurements of every sunscreen or a way to predict an individual’s burn time.

What the 2017 sunscreen study actually concluded

Diffey and Osterwalder’s paper, “Labelled sunscreen SPFs may overestimate protection in natural sunlight,” appeared in Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences in 2017. The authors analyzed why laboratory SPF results might differ from protection expected outdoors; they did not test and rank retail brands. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s paper page and PubMed’s abstract describe the study.

The authors state that for products labeled SPF 50+, it may not be possible under natural sunlight to achieve more than 25-fold protection. That is their estimate from the analysis, not a universal field result for all products. They also directly reject treating SPF as a time multiplier: “The popular interpretation of the SPF that it can be thought of as how much longer skin covered with sunscreen takes to burn in sunlight compared with unprotected skin, can no longer be defended.”

Why a lab SPF result may not match outdoor protection

SPF is derived through standardized testing, and the study’s proposed explanation points to differences between that setting and ordinary use. Chemistry World’s 2017 report describes several relevant factors; they are possible contributors, not evidence that labels are fraudulent.

Test application versus real application

Laboratory testing assumes an even layer of 2 mg/cm². In everyday use, people may apply a thinner, less even layer. Rubbing and perspiration can also reduce the sunscreen left on the skin, according to Chemistry World’s account of the study.

Solar simulator versus sunlight

The report notes that UV solar simulators filter visible light, whereas natural sunlight includes visible wavelengths. The authors considered whether that spectral difference could affect erythema—the skin reddening used in SPF assessment—and therefore the estimated protection. This is part of the paper’s analysis, not proof that every sunscreen performs the same way outdoors.

How to use SPF information without treating it as a timer

Do not multiply a personal burn time by the SPF number to decide how long it is safe to remain in the sun. The study challenges that interpretation, and its modeled estimates cannot predict an individual’s exposure or burn time.

For readers in the United States, the FDA’s consumer guidance recommends choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher and reapplying at least every two hours. Check the product label for its water-resistance information and directions for reapplication when swimming or sweating. These are current US regulator recommendations, separate from the 2017 study. What the study’s SPF estimates do—and do not—tell you

Chemistry World reported the authors’ estimate that SPF 30 under typical midday summer sunlight conditions in the UK and southern Europe may provide around half its claimed value. That estimate is limited to the stated conditions and geography; it should not be generalized to every climate, sunscreen, or person.

Neither that estimate nor the SPF 50+ estimate is a direct measurement of all consumer products in normal use. The paper examined the difference between standardized laboratory SPF and expected protection in natural sunlight. It did not establish a brand ranking, measure skin-cancer outcomes, or show how consumers apply sunscreen.
