A small lagoon containing green algae was identified inside a Chinstrap penguin guano stain at Hannah Point, on Livingston Island. That striking field observation supports a possible local link between penguin colonies, algae and snowmelt—but it does not show that guano-fed algae caused a measured amount of melting. Dark guano and algae offer plausible ways to reduce snow’s reflectivity, yet the evidence comes from different studies and should not be conflated.
What researchers observed at Hannah Point
A 2023 study used UAV hyperspectral imagery to characterize vegetation and penguin guano at Hannah Point, Livingston Island. The researchers identified a small water lagoon covered by green algae within a Chinstrap penguin guano stain. The study also assembled a spectral library spanning 400–2500 nm for five main vegetation communities to help distinguish them in imagery. Román et al. (2023)
This is evidence that algae and guano occurred together at a specific coastal site. The study did not isolate the effects of guano-fed algae in an experiment or report a measured snowmelt rate attributable to them.
How guano, algae and sunlight could be connected
Nutrients can support biological growth
Penguin guano can deliver nutrients to nearby land and water. Those nutrients may favor algae where conditions permit, but a colony’s proximity to an algae bloom does not by itself establish that guano caused the bloom. A 2024 study experimentally modelled trace-element release from Gentoo and Chinstrap guano into seawater and snowmelt water. It supports the possibility of chemical transfer, not the specific claim that this transfer caused the algae or melting observed at Hannah Point. Ruiz-Gutiérrez et al. (2024)

Darker surfaces can absorb more solar energy
Snow reflects much of the sunlight that reaches it. Dark material can lower snow’s albedo—its reflectivity—and increase the share of solar energy absorbed. A separate 2024 paper describes penguin droppings as darkening snow in this way. Algae pigments can also darken snow, making greater absorption a plausible local mechanism. This albedo explanation is supporting context, not a melt experiment reported by the 2023 Hannah Point study. Together, these ideas suggest a possible chain: guano supplies nutrients and dark material; algae may grow in nutrient-rich meltwater; and darker surfaces may absorb more sunlight. The links are plausible, but the available studies do not establish the whole chain as a measured cause of snowmelt at the lagoon.

What Antarctic snow-algae maps show—and what they do not
A 2020 study combined Sentinel-2 imagery and field campaigns to map green snow algae blooms along the Antarctic Peninsula. It counted 1,679 blooms covering 1.95 × 106 m2 seasonally and estimated total dry biomass of 1.3 × 103 tonnes. Researchers found that 60% of mapped blooms were less than 5 km from a penguin colony. The mapped proximity is consistent with a relationship between colonies and blooms, but it does not prove that penguin guano caused every nearby bloom or quantify its contribution to melt.

How large is the effect?
The direct example in the 2023 study is a small coastal feature on Livingston Island. The 2020 figures describe mapped blooms across the Antarctic Peninsula. Neither result quantifies how much melting penguin guano or algae cause across Antarctica, and neither supports the claim that penguins are a major driver of continental ice loss. The best-supported conclusion is narrower: guano, algae and snow can interact locally, and darkening provides a plausible route to greater solar absorption, but the melt contribution has not been measured in the cited Hannah Point study.
