No current evidence cited here verifies that one group controls 51% of Bitcoin’s total mining power. Recent reports instead show that several separately named mining pools accounted for large shares of block production in dated snapshots. Those figures raise a real concentration concern, but a pool’s share is not proof of common ownership, coordination, or control over every miner using it.
What the recent figures actually show
The reported figures measure blocks associated with pool labels over particular periods. They should not be read as an audit of who owns mining machines or as proof that multiple pools act as one group.
| Reported result | What was measured | What it does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| Above 70% for four pools in a June 23, 2026 snapshot | A dated pool-share snapshot attributed by Bitcoin.com News to miningpoolstats.stream; the named pools were Foundry Digital, AntPool, ViaBTC, and F2Pool. Bitcoin.com News | Shows high combined production associated with four labels in that snapshot. It does not show that one group controlled 51%. |
| 61.72% of 1,024 sampled blocks over the week ending September 30, 2026 | Satoshi Gazette Data Desk attributed the blocks to Foundry USA, AntPool, and F2Pool labels. Its sampling-based 95% interval for estimated combined hashrate was 58–65%. Satoshi Gazette Data Desk | Estimates the combined share associated with three labels in that one-week sample, with sampling uncertainty. The report cautions that labels do not establish machine ownership, geography, coordination, or how quickly miners can redirect work. |
| Historical pool-operator share based on an observation ending December 30, 2024 | A Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance observation reported in 2025. Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance | Provides historical context only; it cannot establish a pool’s share in October 2026. |
These measurements are not interchangeable: a block-label count, an estimated hashrate share, and ownership or control of mining equipment answer different questions. Time window and attribution method also matter. The cited 2026 results are secondary reporting and analysis, not a definitive ownership audit.

Why a majority of mining power matters
Bitcoin miners repeatedly hash block headers, and proof of work makes replacing older blocks require substantial work. The Bitcoin Developer Guide explains: “Only if you acquired a majority of the network’s hashing power could you reliably execute such a 51 percent attack against transaction history (although, it should be noted, that even less than 50% of the hashing power still has a good chance of performing such attacks).” Bitcoin Developer Guide: Block Chain

A majority attacker could try to build a competing chain that excludes or reorders transactions, delays confirmations, or reverses a recent payment. That can enable a double-spend of the attacker’s own coins: the attacker pays someone on the public chain, then attempts to replace that history with a competing one in which the payment is absent. The risk concerns transaction history and confirmation, not unrestricted control of the currency.
What a 51% attack cannot do
Hashing power does not give an attacker other users’ private keys. A majority attacker cannot simply spend someone else’s bitcoin or create arbitrary new bitcoin. An SEC-hosted issuer filing describes the risk as preventing confirmation or reversing recent transactions, while noting that an attacker cannot generate new units or transactions or control another person’s coins without access to that person’s keys. Pooled mining lets miners combine resources to find blocks more often and share proceeds roughly in proportion to contributed hashing power. Participants generally receive smaller, less variable payments than they would from solo mining, as described in the Bitcoin Developer Guide: Mining.

A pool label can indicate where block production is attributed, but it does not by itself reveal who owns the participating machines or whether different operators are coordinating. Nor does a high pool share prove that all participating miners will continue directing work there: miners may be able to redirect their hashrate. The September 2026 report specifically notes that its labels do not reveal ownership, geography, coordination, or the speed of that response.

- Time window: Is the figure from one day, a week, a month, or a longer observation?
- Measured quantity: Does it count blocks by label, estimate hashrate, or document ownership and control of equipment?
- Attribution method: Is the label inferred from a coinbase tag or payout address, or reported directly by a pool?
- Aggregation: Is the claim about one pool, or several separately named pools combined? Do not call them one group without evidence of common control.
- Uncertainty and coordination: Does the estimate state sampling uncertainty, and is there evidence that operators are coordinating or carrying out an attack?
For the figures reported in 2026, the sources establish high recent block-production shares across multiple pool labels. They do not establish that one group owns or controls 51% of Bitcoin mining power, that separate pools are coordinating, or that an attack is occurring.
