No official cross-platform save transfer or cross-platform play is documented for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. A Nintendo 3DS save is not documented as importable into the Nintendo Switch Online/N64 version. Nintendo does support transfers within the Nintendo 3DS family and within the Nintendo Switch family, but those are separate systems.
What “Ocarina of Time” means in this question
Two different releases are usually being confused:
Ocarina of Time 3D on Nintendo 3DS
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is a Nintendo 3DS remake with its own local save implementation. Nintendo’s official instruction booklet documents save controls and even describes a button combination—holding A, B, X and Y while the Nintendo 3DS logo is displayed—to delete all save data. That is evidence of a save system belonging to the 3DS software and console family, rather than a universal account save shared with other platforms.
Ocarina of Time through Nintendo Switch Online
The Nintendo Switch release is the Nintendo 64 version delivered through Nintendo Switch Online. It is separate software running on Switch, not the 3DS remake. A Switch save created for that release is therefore a different save from an Ocarina of Time 3D save.

- Save migration: Can progress from one platform be imported into another?
- Console replacement: Can progress move to another console of the same family?
- Cross-platform play: Can players on different systems play together online?
Nintendo’s documentation answers those cases differently. Same-family console transfers are supported in defined situations; a 3DS-to-Switch conversion and an Ocarina of Time cross-platform multiplayer mode are not documented.

Transfer and play support at a glance

What you can transfer when replacing a console
Moving Ocarina of Time 3D to another 3DS-family system
Nintendo’s 3DS system-transfer process is designed for systems in the Nintendo 3DS family. If you are replacing a 3DS, use Nintendo’s transfer procedure on the source and destination systems and follow its prompts for moving applicable software and data.
- Confirm that both the source and destination are systems in the Nintendo 3DS family.
- Start the Nintendo 3DS system-transfer process on both systems and select the roles requested by the on-screen instructions.
- Allow the transfer to finish before deleting or formatting the original system.
- Check the destination system for Ocarina of Time 3D and its transferred save data.
This is a console-replacement operation inside the 3DS family. Selecting a Nintendo Switch as the destination is outside the documented process.
Moving the Switch version to another Switch
For a Switch replacement, Nintendo supports either an individual save transfer or a full user and save-data transfer between Switch consoles.

- Keep the source and destination Switch consoles available and follow Nintendo’s Switch save-data transfer instructions.
- Choose the user and the individual game save, or transfer the complete user/save-data profile if that is the option you need.
- On the destination console, launch the Switch Online/N64 version and verify that the expected save appears.
The transfer applies to the Switch save created by that release. It does not read or translate the save from Ocarina of Time 3D.
Restoring a Switch cloud save
Nintendo Switch Online cloud saves are tied to a Nintendo Account, not to every version of a game on every Nintendo platform. For a compatible title, sign in to the same Nintendo Account on the replacement Switch and use Nintendo’s cloud-save download function. The exact availability is title-specific: Nintendo says Save Data Cloud support is identified in the eShop and in the game’s product information.
Do not assume that an account containing a 3DS purchase or 3DS save will show a corresponding Switch cloud backup. The cloud service can restore a compatible Switch save; it is not a cross-platform conversion service.

Why a 3DS save does not appear on Switch
The releases use different save implementations
The 3DS manual describes local save controls for Ocarina of Time 3D, while the Switch Online release is a separate Nintendo 64 version. Nintendo’s 3DS transfer documentation describes movement within the 3DS family, and Nintendo’s Switch documentation describes movement within Switch consoles. Neither set of instructions describes importing the 3DS software’s save structure into the Switch release.
A Nintendo Account is not a universal game-save format
Linking consoles to the same Nintendo Account can be required for some Switch services, including cloud restoration, but account identity does not make saves interchangeable. The game must support the relevant Switch feature, and the save must belong to the compatible Switch software.
The remake and the Nintendo 64 release are not the same product
Even though both releases tell the same core adventure, they are different platform versions. A transfer tool would need explicit support for the source save, the destination software and the conversion between their data formats. No such Nintendo-supported Ocarina of Time 3D-to-Switch path is documented.

Does Ocarina of Time have cross-platform multiplayer?
No cross-platform multiplayer mode is documented for Ocarina of Time. The Ocarina of Time 3D instruction booklet presents a solo adventure and save controls, not an online-play feature. Nintendo’s Switch Online guidance describes online play as something available only in compatible games and says the requirements are identified in the eShop and product information.
That means there is no documented option for a 3DS player and a Switch player to join the same Ocarina of Time session. The absence is not a hidden setting that can be enabled by linking Nintendo Accounts or subscribing to Nintendo Switch Online.

Nintendo ended online play and other online-communication functionality for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS software on April 8, 2024. That service change did not add a cross-platform mode to Ocarina of Time. Instead, it further limits legacy online functionality on those systems. Ocarina of Time’s lack of a documented cross-platform multiplayer feature is a game-design and platform-support issue, separate from that service shutdown.

Choose the right path for your situation
You are moving from a 3DS to another 3DS
Use the Nintendo 3DS family system-transfer process. This is the supported route for keeping applicable 3DS software and data together on another 3DS-family system.
You are moving from one Switch to another Switch
Use Nintendo’s individual save-data transfer or full user/save-data transfer. If the title is compatible with Save Data Cloud, you can instead download the backup on the replacement Switch under the same Nintendo Account.
You are moving from Ocarina of Time 3D to Switch
There is no documented Nintendo import process. Keep the 3DS system and its save if you want to continue that particular playthrough, or begin a new save in the Switch Online/N64 release.

You want to play with someone on another platform
There is no documented Ocarina of Time cross-platform multiplayer mode to configure. Nintendo Switch Online membership cannot create multiplayer functionality that the game does not provide.
Common points of confusion
- “I own both versions, so the save should sync.” Ownership of two releases does not establish a shared save format. The 3DS remake and Switch Online/N64 release maintain separate saves.
- “The Switch transfer tool supports games without cloud saves, so it should import my 3DS save.” That statement concerns transferring a save between Switch consoles. It does not expand the tool to Nintendo 3DS software.
- “Nintendo Account linking should make the 3DS save appear.” Account linking identifies a user for supported services; it does not automatically convert platform-specific game data.
- “The 3DS online-service shutdown caused the transfer problem.” The transfer limitation predates that service change conceptually: Nintendo’s documented transfer routes are separated by console family, and no 3DS-to-Switch import is specified.
Buying the 3DS edition
The physical or standalone Nintendo 3DS edition remains relevant if you specifically want Ocarina of Time 3D and its 3DS save environment. Purchasing that edition does not move an existing save to Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch Online. Decide based on the version you intend to play, not on an expectation of shared progress.
How to verify support for a particular Switch release
- Open the current Nintendo eShop listing for the exact Ocarina of Time release you plan to use.
- Check the game’s product information for Save Data Cloud compatibility and any stated Nintendo Switch Online requirements.
- Confirm that the save you are trying to restore was created by that Switch release and is associated with the Nintendo Account used on the destination console.
- If the source save is from Nintendo 3DS, use the 3DS-family transfer route instead; the Switch listing cannot make a 3DS save compatible.
Nintendo’s general compatibility guidance says cloud support is identified in the eShop and product information. Because support can be title- and platform-specific, verify the exact listing rather than relying on a general assumption about Nintendo Switch Online games.
