Official public sources confirm that NVIDIA’s Rubin GPU uses HBM4, but they do not verify a 12-layer configuration. Samsung says its HBM4 is designed for Vera Rubin; SK hynix’s cited 12-layer announcement is for HBM4E samples, a distinct product generation. Those announcements do not establish Rubin’s stack count or the final division of memory supply between the companies.
Does NVIDIA Rubin use 12-layer HBM4?
Not according to the official sources cited here. NVIDIA’s Rubin technical overview identifies HBM4 as memory used by the Rubin GPU, but does not specify how many layers are in each stack. Samsung describes its HBM4 as designed for the Vera Rubin platform, without stating that Rubin uses a 12-layer version.
The 12-layer figure in the cited SK hynix announcement refers to HBM4E samples shipped to major customers. It does not say that Rubin uses those samples, identify a customer, or describe the Rubin GPU’s HBM4 configuration.

HBM4 and HBM4E are different product generations
The distinction matters: a 12-layer specification for HBM4E cannot be treated as proof of a 12-layer HBM4 configuration in Rubin. The announcements also describe different stages and products, so their performance figures are not a like-for-like comparison.

| Announcement | What it says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA Rubin GPU | NVIDIA identifies HBM4 as part of the GPU. | The HBM4 stack’s layer count. |
| Samsung HBM4 | Samsung says its HBM4 is designed for Vera Rubin and is in mass production. It reports 11.7 Gbps per pin, with enhancement to 13 Gbps. | A 12-layer Rubin configuration or Samsung’s share of Rubin supply. |
| SK hynix HBM4E samples | On June 18, 2026, SK hynix announced shipment of 12-layer HBM4E samples to major customers. It reports 48 GB per stack and a maximum 16 Gbps per pin. | That the samples are for Rubin, that Rubin uses HBM4E, or that Rubin’s HBM4 has 12 layers. |
The performance numbers above are vendor-published product figures, not independent, like-for-like measurements. SK hynix also reports more than 20% better power efficiency and 17% lower heat resistance for its HBM4E compared with preceding HBM4; those are the company’s stated comparisons, not evidence about Rubin’s HBM4 implementation. See the SK hynix HBM4E announcement for the company’s claims and wording.
What Samsung and SK hynix have said about Rubin
Samsung: HBM4 designed for Vera Rubin
Samsung’s announcement says its HBM4 is in mass production and designed for Vera Rubin. The company reports 11.7 Gbps per pin, with enhancement to 13 Gbps. It does not specify a 12-layer Rubin stack. The figures and platform statement are in Samsung’s HBM4 announcement.

SK hynix: memory codevelopment with NVIDIA
NVIDIA has separately described multiyear memory codevelopment with SK hynix for Vera Rubin AI supercomputers and other NVIDIA platforms. That establishes a collaboration, but the cited statement does not disclose a final Rubin HBM4 supplier allocation or a layer count. NVIDIA also announced a separate supply collaboration with Samsung; neither announcement establishes exclusivity or the complete allocation between suppliers. See NVIDIA’s SK hynix announcement and NVIDIA’s Samsung collaboration announcement.

- The number of layers in Rubin’s HBM4 stacks.
- The final HBM4 supplier allocation for Rubin systems.
- Any connection between the HBM4E samples announced by SK hynix and Rubin.
Until NVIDIA or a supplier publishes those specifications, the precise claim that Rubin uses “12-layer HBM4 from Samsung and SK hynix” should be treated as unverified—not as a fact established by these official announcements.
