Yes. Marathon supports full cross-play and cross-progression across Steam on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Cross-progression is Bungie’s Cross Save system: after you link your platform accounts to one Bungie.net Profile, your Marathon shells, progress, and gear are available on each linked platform. You can also enter a zone alone or with a Crew.
Cross-play is enabled automatically. PlayStation and Xbox players can opt out of cross-platform matchmaking, but Bungie warns that Console Only play can mean a smaller matchmaking pool and longer queues. Console players also need an active online subscription.
Which platforms support Marathon cross-play?
At launch, Marathon supports cross-play between these three platforms:

Because Marathon is a live-service game, platform support and account settings can change; check Bungie’s current support documentation if you are reading this substantially later than launch.

How Marathon cross-play works
Cross-play controls who can be in the same matchmaking pool. The official Cross Play Guide says the feature lets players form Crews and fight against players on all supported platforms. It is enabled automatically, so a PC player can normally match with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players without changing a setting.
Playing with friends on another platform
- Make sure each person is playing on Steam, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S.
- Use the Bungie account and in-game social features associated with your Marathon profile to form a Crew or invite the other player.
- Launch into a zone together. Cross-play handles the platform differences; everyone remains in the same shared matchmaking environment.
The supplied official guidance establishes cross-platform Crews and matchmaking, but it does not publish a separate player-count limit for a Crew in the material available here. Do not assume a particular maximum group size from the cross-play feature alone.
What happens if you turn cross-play off?
PlayStation and Xbox players can opt out of cross-platform play. The guide also refers to a Console Only choice. Bungie warns that either approach can produce a more limited matchmaking experience, including longer queue times, because fewer players are eligible to match with you.

Opting out is therefore a matchmaking trade-off, not a performance upgrade. If your priority is finding a match quickly, leave the automatic cross-play setting enabled. If you have a specific reason to stay within console matchmaking, accept that queues may take longer and that the available player pool may be smaller.
What is Marathon Cross Save?
Cross Save is Marathon’s cross-progression system. Bungie says it lets you share your Marathon account—including progress and gear—across any platform linked to your Bungie Profile. The Cross Save page also says that, for Marathon, linking your accounts makes progress sharing automatic.
In practical terms, Cross Save is the feature to use when you want to move between PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S without starting a separate Marathon account on each device. The shared account includes your shells, progress, and gear. Cross-play and Cross Save are related but distinct:
| Feature | What it changes | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Cross-play | Lets players on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S form Crews and match against one another | Supported platform access and the normal online matchmaking connection |
| Cross Save | Lets one Marathon account, including shells, progress, and gear, follow you across linked platforms | One Bungie.net Profile with the relevant Steam, PlayStation, and/or Xbox accounts linked |
Cross Save does not turn a platform purchase into a copy for every storefront. The launch information identifies platform-specific game access as the commercial path, so plan for the edition and online requirements of each platform on which you intend to play.
How to set up Cross Save between PC, PS5, and Xbox
Bungie requires a Bungie.net Profile and linked platform accounts for anyone using Marathon on more than one platform. Set it up before you invest significant time on a second platform, because choosing the wrong Bungie Profile can make your progress appear to be missing.
- Create or identify one Bungie.net Profile. Use the profile that should own your Marathon identity. If you already have a Bungie Profile, sign in to that existing profile rather than creating another one for the second platform.
- Link your platform accounts. Connect the Steam account, PlayStation Network account, Xbox account, or combination you plan to use. Each account should be linked to the same Bungie Profile.
- Start Marathon on the linked platform. Sign in through the platform account you just connected and allow the game to load the associated Bungie identity.
- Check for your existing account data. Your shells, progress, and gear should be available through the shared Marathon account. If the game presents a new or empty profile, stop before creating progress there and verify which Bungie Profile is connected.
- Repeat on the other linked platforms. Use the same Bungie Profile every time. Cross Save is designed to share the account automatically once the links are in place.
Can you disable Cross Save?
No. Bungie’s support answer explicitly says that it is not possible to disable Marathon Cross Save. This is different from cross-play: console players can opt out of cross-platform matchmaking, but there is no equivalent switch to turn off the account-sharing system once you are using the linked profile.

What Cross Save does not solve
- It does not remove the need for access to the game on the platform you want to use.
- It does not replace a PlayStation or Xbox online subscription requirement.
- It does not let you use unrelated Bungie Profiles as though they were one account.
- It does not change whether cross-play is enabled; matchmaking control is a separate setting on supported consoles.
Can you play Marathon solo?
Yes. Marathon supports solo entry. Bungie’s Cross Play Guide says players can fill their Crew “or go solo” and launch into a zone. Solo means you enter without pre-forming a Crew; it does not mean the game becomes an offline, single-player mode. You are still using Marathon’s shared online matchmaking structure.
Solo queue versus a pre-made Crew
| Approach | How it works | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Go solo | Enter matchmaking without filling a Crew first | Players who want to start immediately or play independently | It remains an online zone experience, not an offline campaign |
| Form a Crew | Group with other players before launching into a zone | Friends coordinating on the same run | Friends can be on different supported platforms only when cross-play remains enabled |
If you want to meet other players through the normal matchmaking pool, keep cross-play enabled where the platform allows it. A console-only setting can reduce the number of potential matches for both solo players and Crews.

Marathon’s launch FAQ states that console players need an active online subscription. This requirement applies to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S access to the game’s online experience, including matchmaking with other players. The FAQ does not specify a subscription tier or price, and those details can vary by region and change independently of Marathon.
Steam players do not have this console-subscription requirement, although they still need an online connection and the relevant Steam game access. On any platform, Cross Save only works when you sign in to the Bungie Profile that has the platform account linked.
Common setup problems and fixes
Your progress is missing on the second platform
- Confirm that the second platform account is linked to the same Bungie.net Profile used on the first platform.
- Check that you did not create a new Bungie Profile when launching on the second platform.
- Close and relaunch Marathon after correcting the account link so it can load the shared profile.
- Do not continue playing on an unexpected blank profile until the account association is clear; new activity on the wrong identity will not be the same as the progress on your intended profile.
You cannot match with a friend
- Verify that both players are on one of the three supported platforms: Steam, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S.
- Check whether a PlayStation or Xbox player has selected a console-only or opt-out setting. Cross-platform Crews require cross-play to remain available.
- Make sure each player is using the intended Bungie identity and has completed the platform account link.
- If matchmaking is slow after opting out, restore automatic cross-play; Bungie specifically warns that restricted matchmaking can lengthen queues.
Console matchmaking will not start
- Check that the console’s online subscription is active.
- Confirm that the game is signed into the platform account with access to Marathon.
- Review the cross-play setting. A console-only pool may simply have fewer eligible players at that moment.
Examples of how the features work together
PC to PlayStation 5
You play on Steam, then sign in on a PlayStation 5 connected to the same Bungie.net Profile. Cross Save carries your Marathon shells, progress, and gear to the linked console account. With cross-play enabled, you can also form a Crew with players remaining on Steam.
Xbox player joining a PC Crew
An Xbox Series X|S player can join friends on Steam while automatic cross-play is enabled. If that Xbox player switches to Console Only, the cross-platform Crew and matchmaking options become unavailable, and the smaller pool may increase queue times.
Solo play on any supported platform
A player on Steam, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S can fill no Crew slots and launch into a zone alone. The player still needs the platform’s normal online access, and console players still need an active online subscription.
What was confirmed at launch?
Marathon’s launch announcement on March 5, 2026, and its launch FAQ dated March 4, 2026, both identify Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S as supported platforms with cross-play and cross-save. Bungie’s Cross Play Guide confirms automatic cross-play, console opt-out controls, and the ability to launch solo. Bungie’s Cross Save Guide confirms the linked Bungie.net Profile requirement, shared account data, and the fact that Cross Save cannot be disabled.
Those statements establish the feature behavior described here. They do not publish statistical matchmaking guarantees, a fixed queue-time target, a specific Crew-size limit, or a universal console subscription price. Treat those details as dependent on Bungie updates, platform policies, region, and time of day.
