A gentle washcloth or loofah may make keratosis pilaris (KP) feel smoother by lifting surface dead skin, but scrubbing does not cure it. Vigorous rubbing or a harsh scrub can irritate skin and make the bumps more noticeable. Moisturizing and certain topical ingredients are other options; improvement is gradual, and ongoing care may be needed.
What a KP scrub can—and cannot—do
Keratosis pilaris causes small, rough bumps associated with plugs of dead skin cells. It commonly appears on the upper arms and thighs, and dryness can make the bumps more noticeable. People often describe the texture as “rough like sandpaper,” “goosebumps,” or “chicken skin,” but those descriptions alone do not confirm a diagnosis. The American Academy of Dermatology’s overview explains the condition and its common appearance.
“Scrub” can mean different things. A soft washcloth or loofah used gently may help remove surface dead skin. A gritty product or forceful rubbing is not a shortcut: picking, harsh scrubbing, or vigorous exfoliation can irritate the skin and worsen the problem. The AAD recommends gentle exfoliation and warns that scrubbing can irritate KP. See its self-care guidance.
Think of exfoliation as optional surface care, not a way to remove the underlying tendency to form bumps. Stop the physical exfoliation if the area becomes irritated.

What else may help smooth the bumps
Moisturizer for dryness
Moisturizing is a core part of home care because dry skin can accentuate KP. The AAD recommends applying a thick, oil-free cream or ointment after bathing while skin is still damp; Mayo Clinic also describes thicker moisturizers as an option. Products that loosen dead skin cells
Topical products containing urea, lactic acid, salicylic acid, or alpha hydroxy acids may help loosen dead skin cells; some guidance also mentions glycolic acid and certain retinoids. These ingredients and products are not interchangeable, and formulations vary in strength. Follow the product directions. Choosing a routine
There is no single approach established as best for everyone. Consider what you want to address and what your skin tolerates:
- For surface roughness: gentle use of a soft washcloth or loofah may help; stop if it irritates.
- For dryness: use a moisturizer, particularly after bathing on damp skin.
- For persistent rough bumps: a topical product with a keratolytic ingredient may be worth discussing or trying according to its label, with care for dryness and irritation.
More friction is not better. Keep the routine gentle and avoid adding several irritating steps at once.

How long results take and what to expect
KP often improves gradually, and a treatment may not make the bumps disappear. It can last for years, although it commonly clears over time. Treatment does not cure KP, so continued maintenance may be needed to keep symptoms controlled. Some people need to try more than one approach. Mayo Clinic describes its course, while the AAD advises contacting a dermatologist if there is no improvement after 4 to 6 weeks of following a treatment plan.

Ask a health professional for help if home care is not working, the bumps are bothering you, the skin is itchy or inflamed, or you are unsure the bumps are KP. A clinician can assess the skin; Mayo Clinic notes that diagnosis may be made by visual examination, with referral to a dermatologist when appropriate. A dermatologist can examine the skin and tailor a treatment plan. Some people may need prescription medicines; laser or light treatment may be considered if moisturizer and medicine have not helped, but these are not routine or guaranteed solutions. The AAD outlines these options.
