Yes. The Nintendo Switch 2 edition of It Takes Two supports online cross-play with supported PlayStation, Xbox and PC versions. EA’s current Switch 2 guidance names PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC; EA’s launch announcement and broader Help listing also include PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
The important limitation is the console edition. The original Nintendo Switch version does not normally play online with the Switch 2 edition. If a Switch 2 owner wants to play online with someone using the original Switch version, the Switch 2 player must install or select the original Switch edition. Local play between the two Nintendo generations is available through GameShare.
What the cross-play answer means
Cross-play in It Takes Two means two people can join the same online co-op session even when they use different supported platforms. A player on Nintendo Switch 2 can therefore invite a friend on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or PC. EA also says the Switch 2 edition works with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, although those older consoles are not listed on every EA support page.
This support applies to the Switch 2 edition, not automatically to the original Nintendo Switch release. Check the console and edition each player will launch before troubleshooting an invitation that does not appear.

Supported platform combinations
EA’s Switch 2-specific Help guide lists the newer console and PC platforms. EA’s general Friend’s Pass guidance and its September 2026 launch announcement add the previous console generations. The resulting compatibility picture is:

EA’s older platform documentation says PlayStation 4 can play with PlayStation 5 and Xbox One can play with Xbox Series X|S within their respective console families. Its older statement that Nintendo Switch has no cross-play describes the original Switch version and predates the Switch 2 release, so it should not be applied to the Switch 2 edition.
Switch 2 edition versus original Switch edition
Why the edition matters
The two Nintendo releases are treated as different versions for online matchmaking. Buying or launching the Switch 2 edition is what enables the newer cross-platform network connections. Owning a Switch 2 console by itself does not make an original Switch copy cross-play with PlayStation, Xbox or PC.

Playing with an original Switch owner
If one person has a Switch 2 and the other has the original Switch, online play requires the Switch 2 player to use the original Switch edition. This is a version downgrade, not a special compatibility toggle. Both players then join the original-Switch matchmaking environment.
Using GameShare locally
For the two Nintendo generations in the same location, EA supports GameShare for local play. GameShare is separate from online cross-play: it connects compatible nearby Nintendo systems without placing the session in the cross-platform online pool.
How to play online with a friend on another platform
- Confirm the editions. The Nintendo player should launch the Nintendo Switch 2 edition. A PlayStation, Xbox or PC friend should use a supported edition on that platform. If the friend is on the original Switch, switch the Switch 2 player to the original Switch edition instead.
- Update the game and console. Install the latest available game update and system software on each device. Cross-play instructions can change as a platform version moves from pre-release to general availability.
- Check online subscriptions. EA says both players need the relevant paid online service for online co-op: Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus or an eligible Xbox Game Pass subscription, depending on the platform.
- Open the game’s online co-op or friend-invite screen. The owner starts the session and sends the in-game invitation to the other player. Use the account identity shown by the game rather than relying only on a console-friends list.
- Accept the invitation on the other platform. The invited player launches the game, accepts the request and waits for the host to complete the connection. Cross-platform invitations can take longer than same-platform invites while account services synchronize.
- Test the connection before starting a long session. Enter the first playable area together, then confirm that both players can move and interact. This isolates account or network problems before you commit to a larger co-op session.
Friend’s Pass: who needs to buy the game?
Friend’s Pass lets the invited player download a free pass from that platform’s digital store and join an invitation from someone who owns the full game. The invited player does not need to purchase a second full copy merely to participate in the owner’s co-op session.

If one player owns the full game
The owner downloads and launches the complete version, while the friend installs Friend’s Pass on the friend’s own platform. The owner sends the in-game invite, and the friend accepts it from the pass installation.

If neither player owns the full game
Two people can use Friend’s Pass to try the first chapter. Continuing beyond that opening chapter requires at least one player to own the full game. The pass does not turn two trial accounts into two complete licenses.
Friend’s Pass and cross-generation wording
An older EA Friend’s Pass page describes cross-generation support but not cross-platform play. That wording applies to the versions covered when the page was published. EA’s newer Switch 2 guidance and September 2026 announcement add cross-platform play for the Switch 2 edition, while the Friend’s Pass download-and-invite mechanics remain the same.

Release timing, upgrade and price
EA announced the Nintendo Switch 2 edition for October 15, 2026. EA listed October 16 for Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. The edition was announced in both physical and digital formats.
EA announced a standard price of $39.99 and said existing owners of the original Nintendo Switch edition can upgrade to the Switch 2 edition for free. The $39.99 figure is the announced standard price, not a guarantee of the final amount in every country, retailer or storefront. Regional taxes, currency conversion and retailer pricing can differ.

The Switch 2 edition is the version to obtain when your intended partner is on PlayStation, Xbox or PC. Before purchasing a physical copy, verify that the box identifies the Nintendo Switch 2 edition; an original Switch cartridge or digital entitlement follows the original-Switch compatibility rules.

Troubleshooting a failed cross-play invitation
The friend cannot find the invitation
- Confirm that the host sent an in-game invitation, not only a console-party message.
- Check that both players are signed in to the accounts used by the game and have accepted any pending privacy or cross-play prompts.
- Close and restart the game on both devices, then send a new invitation after both reach the main menu.
The Switch 2 player is paired with an original Switch
Online pairing across those editions is not the normal supported path. The Switch 2 player must launch the original Switch edition for the online session, or both players can use GameShare for nearby local play.
One player can join but cannot continue
Check ownership. Friend’s Pass permits the opening chapter when neither player owns the full game, but one player must own the complete version to proceed beyond it.
The game reports an online-service problem
- Verify the Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass requirement for each player’s platform.
- Test each console or PC’s internet connection and restart the router if other online services are also failing.
- Check EA’s current service-status and platform notices before changing game data; a temporary outage cannot be fixed by reinstalling the game.
A platform appears missing from an EA page
EA’s pages do not all show identical lists. The Switch 2-specific guide names PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, while the broader Help listing and launch announcement also name PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Use the current instructions for your exact platform and region, particularly during the Switch 2 launch period.
Before you invite someone: a compatibility checklist
- Write down the exact hardware: Nintendo Switch 2, original Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S or PC.
- Identify the edition each player will launch, especially when a Nintendo player owns both Switch versions.
- Decide whether the session is online or a nearby local/GameShare session.
- Choose the full game or Friend’s Pass arrangement and confirm that one player owns the full game if you intend to play beyond the first chapter.
- Confirm the required online subscription for every player using an online session.
- Install updates and verify the release is available in your storefront and region.
Bottom line for common setups
A Switch 2 player can play It Takes Two online with a friend on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC, and EA also identifies PS4 and Xbox One as supported partners. Two Switch 2 players can play together online or locally. Two original Switch players can play online together. The one major Nintendo exception is a direct online session between the original Switch edition and the Switch 2 edition: the Switch 2 player must use the original edition, while GameShare remains the local option.
