HUMANKIND 2 is planned to include multiplayer, but cross-play is not confirmed. The currently announced version is a Windows PC game coming to Steam in 2027. Its official Steam listing includes both a “Multiplayer” tag and a “Multi-player” feature, yet neither Steam nor Amplitude Studios has announced console editions, cross-platform matchmaking, cross-save, a player limit, or specific cooperative and competitive modes. Because the game is unreleased, those details can still change before launch.

“Planned” matters here. HUMANKIND 2 is still in development, so an announced feature can be refined, delayed, or changed. Conversely, an unannounced feature such as cross-play could be revealed later; the current evidence is not a permanent no.

A multiplayer tag tells you that Amplitude intends the game to support play involving more than one person. It does not tell you how a session works. The listing does not yet identify whether multiplayer is cooperative, competitive, or both, nor does it describe its lobby, invitation, matchmaking, or networking model.

- Mode: No official source cited for this status date says whether friends can cooperate against computer-controlled opponents, compete directly, or choose between both.
- Player count: No maximum number of participants has been published.

Release platform and timing
Steam currently lists HUMANKIND 2 for Windows PC with a planned 2027 release. Amplitude Studios repeated the PC-and-2027 timing in its 15 October 2026 gameplay-reveal press release and invited players to wishlist the game on Steam.
No PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, macOS, or other platform edition is announced in the official material covered by this status. That distinction is important for anyone asking whether a PC owner can play with a console owner: a cross-platform match requires both a console release and an explicit technical and policy decision to connect it to PC players. Neither step has been announced.
Cross-play: what is and is not known
Cross-play (also called cross-platform multiplayer) lets people on different platforms join the same online session—for example, a Windows PC player and a console player. It is different from ordinary multiplayer, where everyone may be playing online but on the same platform or storefront.

As of 18 October 2026, no first-party HUMANKIND 2 announcement confirms cross-platform matchmaking. The official Steam listing and Amplitude announcement also do not announce console versions. Therefore, the accurate answer to “Is HUMANKIND 2 cross-platform?” is unknown, not confirmed.
Why “unknown” is the careful answer
An unreleased game can gain platform support and networking features during development. Saying “no cross-play” would claim a final product decision that Amplitude has not made public. Saying “yes” would promise a feature absent from the announcements. Until a later official statement names supported platforms and cross-platform play, neither conclusion is justified.
Cross-save and cross-progression
Cross-save (sometimes called cross-progression) lets your campaign or account progress move between platforms. It is separate from cross-play: a game could allow PC and console players to share a match without synchronizing saves, or synchronize progress while keeping multiplayer platform-specific.
No current official HUMANKIND 2 material announces cross-save, cross-progression, cloud-save behavior across platforms, or a common account system. If you plan to change devices, assume that portability is not established rather than promising yourself that a campaign will transfer.

Can you play with friends when it launches?
The planned multiplayer listing means Amplitude intends HUMANKIND 2 to support multiplayer on its Windows PC/Steam release. You should still wait for the final multiplayer documentation before making a precise plan with friends, because the important practical settings have not been published.
A sensible planning checklist
- Confirm each person’s platform. The announced platform is Windows PC on Steam. Do not assume a console or alternate PC storefront version exists.
- Check the final mode description. Look for explicit wording such as cooperative, competitive, online, or local multiplayer; the current listing does not distinguish them.
- Find the published player limit. A “Multiplayer” label does not establish whether a session supports two people or a larger group.
- Verify cross-play wording. Only an Amplitude or platform announcement that names cross-platform play should be treated as confirmation.
- Check account and edition requirements. Before buying, look for instructions about Steam accounts, required content, regional restrictions, and version compatibility.
This approach avoids buying on the assumption that friends on another platform can join when the feature has never been promised.
How to check for an official update
Because the game is unreleased, the most reliable information can change between now and 2027. Use a primary-source check rather than relying on a retailer description or an old forum post.
- Open the current HUMANKIND 2 page on Steam and read the platform, release-window, and feature sections together. A feature tag alone may not explain its limits.
- Review Amplitude Studios’ dated announcements for a statement that names supported platforms, cross-platform matchmaking, cross-save, or player counts.
- Look for the same terminology in the game’s FAQ, technical requirements, or multiplayer guide when those documents are published.
- Match the announcement date to your purchase decision. A statement made after 18 October 2026 supersedes this status if it clearly changes the platform or networking plan.
Prefer wording that is explicit—for example, “cross-platform multiplayer between Windows PC and [named console]”—over a general promise that the game has multiplayer.

What the current development stage tells you
HUMANKIND 2 has not launched. Amplitude says it is reopening an Insiders Program so players can try early versions and provide feedback before release. Early access to development builds is not the same as a final multiplayer specification: test access, supported platforms, and network features can be limited or changed.
Amplitude’s 15 October 2026 gameplay-reveal press release frames the sequel around player-driven civilization identity. Game Director Benoit Humbert said: “With HUMANKIND 2, we want every choice to shape the identity of your civilization. Whether you evolve your culture, adapt to a new environment, build relationships, or take an unexpected path, the history you create should feel truly yours.” That statement describes the design goal; it does not promise cross-play or identify a multiplayer mode.
The same official communications highlight more than 70 playable cultures and the involvement of more than 30 historians worldwide in Historical Mode. Amplitude also says its games have reached more than 10 million players worldwide. Those figures provide context about the project and studio, but they do not establish a multiplayer capacity, platform matrix, or cross-save system for this sequel.
Common assumptions to avoid
“It has a Multiplayer tag, so cross-play must be included.”
No. The tag confirms planned multiplayer, not the ability to connect different platforms. Cross-play needs its own announcement.

“A 2027 PC release means consoles are coming later.”
No console edition is currently announced. A later console release is possible, but its existence and timing are unknown.
“The Insiders Program proves the final networking model.”
No. Early builds may test a subset of features, and Amplitude has not published a final player count, mode list, or matchmaking design.
“Cross-save and cross-play are the same feature.”
No. Cross-play concerns joining the same session from different platforms; cross-save concerns carrying progress between them. Neither is announced for HUMANKIND 2.

For a dependable answer, look for an official statement that identifies the platforms and the connection type. A complete confirmation would normally state which PC and console versions can match, whether matchmaking and invites work across those platforms, and whether progress is shared. A release date by itself would not answer those questions.
Until such wording appears, the practical status remains: multiplayer is planned for the announced Windows PC/Steam release; cross-play, console support, player count, multiplayer mode, and cross-save are not confirmed.
