Sometimes—but an HDMI-to-DVI-D connection does not guarantee 144Hz. The graphics card’s HDMI output, the monitor’s DVI-D input, the resolution and timing, and the cable or adapter must all support the chosen mode. Check the exact supported modes for both devices before buying a cable or changing ports.
What HDMI-to-DVI-D means
HDMI and DVI-D are different digital video interfaces. “HDMI-to-DVI-D” describes a signal path between an HDMI port and a DVI-D port, often using a cable or adapter. It does not name a refresh-rate standard: the connectors alone cannot tell you whether a particular setup will run at 144Hz.
For a successful 144Hz connection, the source and display must both support the same resolution and timing over the specific ports in use. The cable or adapter must also carry that signal. HDMI Licensing Administrator advises checking the documentation for the particular devices rather than assuming support from a connector or version label (HDMI 2.2 overview).

HDMI capability varies by device and mode
HDMI versions describe interface capabilities, not a guarantee that every port on every product supports every listed format. HDMI’s public overview for Specification 1.4b lists 1920×1080 at 120Hz, while its HDMI 2.2 overview describes higher rates for some formats. Those examples do not establish 144Hz support for a particular HDMI output or for an HDMI-to-DVI-D connection. Check the GPU’s and monitor’s supported-mode tables for the exact resolution and refresh rate (HDMI Specification 1.4b; HDMI 2.2 overview).

DVI-D has its own link and timing limits
DVI-D carries digital video, but its supported modes depend on the link configuration and the timing required by the display mode. VESA describes a 165MHz maximum TMDS clock rate in its discussion of DVI and Dual-Mode DisplayPort adapters. That figure is useful context, but it is not a universal cutoff for 144Hz: the exact resolution, timing, link configuration and device support matter (VESA’s Dual-Mode standard overview).
The adapter or cable does not add capability
A cable can connect compatible ports; it cannot upgrade the HDMI output, DVI-D input or their supported modes. Adapter specifications may be limited to particular signals, resolutions or refresh rates. Direction also matters: confirm that the product supports your actual connection direction, as well as the connectors, gender and modes required by both devices. VESA’s discussion of DisplayPort adapters—including a 300MHz configuration for a newer Type 2 Dual-Mode DisplayPort adapter—describes that specific DisplayPort-source context, not generic HDMI-to-DVI-D capability.

- Bi-directional DVI-HDMI adapter m/f is a great video accessory between HDMI and DVI device (as DVI to HDMI adapter for monitor, or HDMI to DVI adapter for monitor)
- Compact DVI-D to HDMI adapter supports high resolutions up to 4k@30Hz, 1920x1200 and 1080p Full HD (can’t handle144Hz); audio must be transmitted separately (DVI-D does not natively support audio, not support analog signal)
- HDMI converter used as DVI source to HDMI monitor adapter (DVI computer to HDMI monitor), also as HDMI source to DVI monitor (HDMI computer to DVI monitor); compatible with DVI video card, game console PS3/PS4, TV, projector, laptop, cable box
- 4k monitor adapter to HDMI DVI features gold plated connectors to resist corrosion and increase durability; dvi male to hdmi female adapter fit in both Female DVI-I (24+5) and Female DVI-D (24+1)
- Small DVI to hdmi connector conversion coupler with grip treads and screws makes an easy hook-up and a secure dvi-hdmi adapters connection; HDMI cable or DVI cable is required (sold separately)
How to check whether your setup can reach 144Hz
- Identify both ports. Confirm that the graphics card or computer has an HDMI output and the monitor has a DVI-D input, or identify the actual ports you plan to connect. If you are using an adapter, verify that it supports that direction.
- Check the monitor’s supported modes. Look up the exact resolution and refresh rates supported through its DVI-D input. A monitor’s advertised maximum refresh rate may apply only to a different input.
- Check the GPU’s supported modes. Verify that its HDMI output supports the same resolution and 144Hz timing. Do not infer this from HDMI version alone.
- Confirm the link and signal requirements. Where relevant, check whether the DVI-D connection is single-link or dual-link, along with the supported timing or pixel clock and color depth. Confirm that the cable or adapter specifications cover the required signal.
- Check the display setting after connecting. In your operating system’s display settings or graphics control panel, select the intended resolution and refresh rate. If 144Hz is not offered, the connected port path, device settings or mode support may be limiting the options; consult the device manuals for supported combinations.
If your 144Hz monitor is stuck at 60Hz
- Confirm the input. Check that the monitor is using the port whose documentation lists 144Hz at your chosen resolution.
- Inspect the supported-mode tables. Compare the exact resolution and refresh rate for the GPU’s output and monitor’s input; a monitor’s headline refresh rate may not be available over every port.
- Review the entire signal path. Check the cable or adapter’s direction, connector compatibility and documented modes. Replacing a cable with another generic HDMI-to-DVI-D adapter is not a reliable way to add 144Hz support.
- Check the operating-system and graphics settings. Select the desired refresh rate if it is listed. If it is absent, do not assume a setting can override a hardware or port limitation.
When another connection is a better choice
If both the GPU and monitor offer another input, use the port combination their manufacturers explicitly document for your resolution and 144Hz target. DisplayPort can be a practical alternative when supported at both ends. VESA gives two 4K displays at 144Hz as an example of DisplayPort 2.x configurations and notes that adapters can connect DisplayPort devices to legacy display types; these are conditional capabilities, not a promise for every GPU, monitor or adapter (VESA’s DisplayPort overview).
For gaming with variable refresh rate, check that the specific GPU output, monitor input and connection path support the adaptive-sync feature you intend to use. A connection that carries video at 144Hz does not, by itself, establish variable-refresh-rate support.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Bi-Directional HDMI to DVI cable: Connect source devices with an HDMI interface (such as Laptop, Desktops, Blu-ray Player, Xbox, PS3, PS4, Wii, etc.) to DVI equipped HDTV, Monitor,Projector; or connect a DVI equipped source device to a display device that supports HDMI. Kindly note: Please select the correct signal source: DVI signal source or HDMI signal source. If you select an incorrect signal source, it will cause the cable not to work or the monitor not to display any image
