Yes. HAProxy can proxy requests to HTTPS backends. Add the ssl option to each backend server line to make HAProxy open a TLS connection to that server. For a secure production configuration, add verify required and identify a trusted certificate authority with ca-file or @system-ca. If the backend chooses its certificate or virtual host by hostname, send SNI as well. HAProxy 3.3 and newer can derive SNI automatically from the HTTP Host header, although an explicit setting remains portable and easy to audit.

What an HTTPS backend means in HAProxy

In a reverse-proxy deployment, there can be two separate network connections:

  • The client-to-HAProxy connection, which may be plain HTTP or HTTPS.
  • The HAProxy-to-backend connection, which may independently be plain HTTP or HTTPS.

When the backend connection uses HTTPS, HAProxy acts as a TLS client to the application server. The backend must listen for TLS, commonly on port 443, and HAProxy must be told to negotiate TLS on that server connection. This is often called TLS re-encryption when HAProxy first terminates HTTPS from the client and then starts a new HTTPS session to the backend.

The two TLS sessions are independent. A certificate presented by HAProxy to an external client does not authenticate a backend server, and a backend certificate does not need to match the public certificate used on the frontend. Each side has its own certificate, trust, protocol, and failure conditions.

Minimum configuration: add ssl to the server line

The essential setting is ssl on every backend server that should receive HTTPS traffic. A typical HTTP-mode configuration looks like this:

backend webservers
  mode http
  balance roundrobin
  server web1 10.0.0.5:443 ssl
  server web2 10.0.0.6:443 ssl

Here, HAProxy sends HTTP requests through TLS to 10.0.0.5:443 and 10.0.0.6:443. The mode http setting lets HAProxy parse HTTP requests, while balance roundrobin distributes them between the two servers. Port 443 is conventional; an HTTPS service can use another port if the address and port in the server line match the service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This minimal form encrypts the hop but does not, by itself, establish that the certificate belongs to the intended backend. Certificate verification must be configured separately.

Production trust validation with verify required

Use verify required when HAProxy must reject an untrusted or invalid backend certificate. Pair it with a CA trust source:

backend webservers
  mode http
  balance roundrobin
  server web1 10.0.0.5:443 ssl verify required ca-file /myca.pem
  server web2 10.0.0.6:443 ssl verify required ca-file /myca.pem

ca-file points to a PEM file containing the trusted root or intermediate certificates that can validate the backend certificate chain. If the operating system’s CA store is appropriate, HAProxy can use @system-ca instead of a custom file:

server web1 10.0.0.5:443 ssl verify required ca-file @system-ca

With verification enabled, HAProxy checks the certificate chain during the TLS handshake. Expired certificates, certificates signed by an unknown authority, incomplete chains, and other validation failures can make the server unavailable to HAProxy. That is preferable to silently accepting an impostor in a production network.

SNI: when the backend needs the hostname

Server Name Indication (SNI) puts a hostname in the TLS ClientHello. It matters when several HTTPS sites share one IP address, when a reverse proxy selects a certificate by hostname, or when the backend requires the requested name before it will route the connection.

To pass the incoming HTTP host value as SNI, add:

backend webservers
  mode http
  balance roundrobin
  server web1 10.0.0.5:443 ssl verify required ca-file /myca.pem sni req.hdr(Host)
  server web2 10.0.0.6:443 ssl verify required ca-file /myca.pem sni req.hdr(Host)

sni req.hdr(Host) evaluates the request’s Host header and uses that value for SNI. This is useful when the same backend address serves multiple names, but it also means the accepted Host value should be constrained by your routing rules. Do not allow arbitrary hostnames to steer traffic to unintended TLS services.

Automatic SNI in HAProxy 3.3 and newer

HAProxy 3.3 and later automatically derive backend SNI from the HTTP Host header in the relevant HTTP configuration. Automatic SNI also applies to health checks unless disabled. This reduces configuration for common deployments, but explicit sni req.hdr(Host) remains a clear, portable choice when configurations must work across versions or when reviewers need to see the behavior directly.

Use no-sni-auto to disable automatic SNI on server connections. If only health-check behavior must be changed, use no-check-sni-auto. These switches are useful when a backend expects a fixed name, when the address rather than the request Host determines identity, or when automatic propagation would be unsafe.

A complete re-encryption example

The following example terminates client HTTPS on HAProxy and creates a separately verified HTTPS connection to each backend:

frontend public_https
  mode http
  bind :443 ssl crt /etc/haproxy/certs/site.pem
  default_backend webservers

backend webservers
  mode http
  balance roundrobin
  server web1 10.0.0.5:443 ssl verify required ca-file /myca.pem sni req.hdr(Host)
  server web2 10.0.0.6:443 ssl verify required ca-file /myca.pem sni req.hdr(Host)
  1. The bind :443 ssl crt ... line makes HAProxy accept HTTPS from clients and present the frontend certificate.
  2. HAProxy decrypts the request so HTTP rules, headers, and load-balancing decisions can be applied.
  3. Each server line’s ssl option starts a new TLS session to the selected backend.
  4. verify required and ca-file validate the backend certificate, while sni req.hdr(Host) supplies the requested hostname.

You can also run an HTTPS backend while leaving the frontend on plain HTTP, or terminate client TLS elsewhere and use HAProxy only for the encrypted backend hop. Frontend TLS termination and backend TLS are independent choices.

Choosing verification and trust-store settings

Decision Recommended setting What it does When to use an alternative
TLS to backend ssl Encrypts and authenticates the TLS handshake at the protocol level. Omit only when the backend is intentionally plain HTTP.
Certificate verification verify required Rejects certificates that do not validate to a trusted CA. verify none is an exception for deliberately untrusted certificates, such as a controlled self-signed service.
Trust source ca-file /path/to/ca.pem Uses the specified PEM CA bundle. ca-file @system-ca uses the system CA store when it contains the required issuer.
SNI sni req.hdr(Host) Sends the request hostname in the TLS ClientHello. HAProxy 3.3+ automatic Host-derived SNI can be used; disable it with no-sni-auto when necessary.
Protocol mode HTTP/1.1 or HTTP/2 over TLS Uses the normal HTTPS backend path. HTTP/3 over QUIC is a separate experimental option in HAProxy 3.3+.
Client certificate Not normally needed Authenticates HAProxy to the backend only when the backend requires mutual TLS. Add a client certificate with crt and the corresponding private key.

When verify none is acceptable—and why it is risky

verify none keeps the connection encrypted but disables certificate trust checking. It can be useful for a lab, a short-lived migration, or a backend using a self-signed certificate when the operational risk has been explicitly accepted. It should not be treated as the normal fix for a broken CA chain.

server web1 10.0.0.5:443 ssl verify none

Without verification, a compromised network path or misdirected address can present any certificate and still complete the handshake. Prefer installing the correct internal CA and using verify required. HAProxy also has a global ssl-server-verify none setting, but a global exception affects more servers than a per-server setting and is therefore harder to review safely.

Mutual TLS to an HTTPS backend

Some services require HAProxy to prove its identity with a client certificate as well as verify the server certificate. This is mutual TLS (mTLS). The backend must be configured to accept HTTPS and request or require client authentication.

backend secure_service
  mode http
  server app1 10.0.0.20:443 ssl verify required ca-file /etc/haproxy/backend-ca.pem
    sni req.hdr(Host) crt /etc/haproxy/client-cert.pem

The crt file contains the client certificate and private key in the format expected by HAProxy. The CA used in ca-file validates the backend’s certificate; it does not automatically authorize HAProxy as a client. The backend’s trust configuration must separately trust the issuer of the client certificate.

Health checks and common failure symptoms

HAProxy’s health checks use the server connection settings, including automatic SNI behavior in HAProxy 3.3 and newer. A backend can therefore pass an ad hoc TLS test while remaining marked down if its health-check name, path, or certificate requirements differ from normal traffic.

  • Certificate verify error: Check that the CA bundle contains the issuing root or intermediate, that the backend sends a complete chain, and that the certificate is not expired. Confirm the path and permissions of ca-file.
  • Wrong certificate or handshake failure on a shared IP: Add the correct SNI value. Use explicit sni req.hdr(Host) or a fixed hostname appropriate to the server.
  • Backend marked DOWN despite a reachable port: Inspect health-check SNI, the check URI, and whether the service expects a particular Host header. If automatic SNI is inappropriate, set no-check-sni-auto and configure the check explicitly.
  • Self-signed development certificate: Install its private CA and retain verify required where possible. Use verify none only as a documented, limited exception.
  • Requests reach the wrong virtual host: Review the incoming Host header, SNI value, backend address, and any host-based ACLs. The TLS name and HTTP Host routing should identify the same service unless there is a deliberate design reason otherwise.
  • mTLS handshake rejected: Confirm that crt includes the private key, the certificate is valid for client authentication, and the backend trusts its issuer.

After changes, validate the HAProxy configuration before reload and examine HAProxy’s alert and health-check logs. A successful TCP connection alone does not prove that certificate validation, SNI, HTTP routing, or mTLS is correct.

HTTP/3 and QUIC backends

Ordinary HTTPS backends use TLS over TCP, commonly with HTTP/1.1 or HTTP/2. HAProxy’s HTTP tutorial also documents an HTTP/3-over-QUIC backend form such as quic4@server:443 ssl, but identifies that capability as experimental and limits it to HAProxy 3.3 and newer. Do not substitute the QUIC syntax for a conventional HTTPS backend unless the backend, network, and HAProxy version all support that experimental path.

A practical configuration checklist

  1. Confirm that the backend actually listens for TLS and identify its address and port.
  2. Add ssl to every affected server line.
  3. Choose certificate validation. For production, use verify required.
  4. Provide the issuing CA with ca-file or use @system-ca when the system trust store is correct.
  5. Determine whether the backend needs SNI. Use an explicit hostname expression when portability or fixed routing matters.
  6. Configure mTLS with crt only when the backend requires a client certificate.
  7. Align health checks with the backend’s TLS name, Host header, path, and authentication requirements.
  8. Validate the configuration, reload HAProxy safely, and monitor both handshake errors and backend health status.

Bottom line

HAProxy fully supports HTTPS reverse-proxy backends. The dependable production pattern is server ... ssl verify required ca-file ..., with SNI supplied when hostname-based TLS routing requires it. HAProxy 3.3 and newer can derive SNI from the HTTP Host header automatically, while explicit SNI remains useful for compatibility and control. Keep certificate validation enabled whenever possible, treat verify none as a deliberate exception, and remember that frontend TLS termination and backend TLS encryption are separate configuration layers.
