Not for normal setup or full use. Google Home and Nest speakers and displays need an internet connection and secure Wi-Fi to set up. During an internet-provider outage, your home Wi-Fi may still be running, but Google says Nest products cannot connect to the internet until service returns. Its public guidance does not establish which alarms, timers, or other local functions continue offline, so do not rely on them without checking current instructions for your specific model.
Wi-Fi and internet are different
Wi-Fi is the wireless network connecting devices inside your home. Internet access is the connection from that network to online services. A router can continue broadcasting Wi-Fi even when your internet provider has an outage, so a speaker may remain connected to the router while being unable to reach Google services.
Google distinguishes an internet-provider outage from a Wi-Fi problem: its guidance says Nest products cannot connect to the internet during an ISP outage, and should come back online after the provider resolves it. Google’s outage troubleshooting guidance

First-time or renewed setup
A new or factory-reset device is not ready for normal use without internet. Google’s setup checklist requires “An Internet connection and secure wireless network,” and the phone used for setup should be connected to the Wi-Fi network the speaker or display will use. Google’s setup checklist

Internet-provider outage, Wi-Fi still working
The device may remain powered and connected to your router, but Google’s guidance says Nest products cannot connect to the internet until the provider resolves the outage. Wi-Fi or router unavailable
If the local wireless network is down, the device cannot connect to that network. Google’s voice-control troubleshooting also asks users to check that the speaker or display and the smart device are powered on, connected to the internet, and on the same Wi-Fi network. This makes voice control connectivity-sensitive, but does not prove that every command fails in every outage. Google’s voice-control troubleshooting
Can alarms, timers, or local features keep working?
Google advertises alarms and timers among Assistant speaker features, and marks some listed Assistant capabilities as requiring internet. However, its public help material does not say whether an alarm or timer already set will still sound after internet access is lost, nor does it provide a complete offline-feature list for each model. Do not count on an existing alarm, timer, voice command, or smart-home control during an outage unless current official guidance for your model confirms it. Google Assistant speaker features

- If other devices have internet but the speaker is offline: Follow the troubleshooting steps for your specific Google Home or Nest product. Google notes that an offline product cannot receive a signal and may need in-person troubleshooting. Google’s outage troubleshooting guidance
- If the Wi-Fi name or password changed: Reconnect or set up the speaker or display again. Google says these devices remember only one Wi-Fi network at a time. Google’s Wi-Fi reconnection instructions
Which devices does this apply to?
Google’s speaker and display Wi-Fi reconnection instructions cover Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Audio, Nest Mini (2nd gen), Home Max, Home Mini (1st gen), Google Home, and Nest Hub displays. Google’s device and Wi-Fi instructions The specific model can affect available features, but choosing another Google speaker does not remove the internet requirement for normal setup and online services.
