Samsung says Galaxy AI translates conversations on the phone, not in Samsung’s cloud. Live Translate for phone calls and Interpreter for face-to-face conversations use on-device AI, according to Samsung support and Samsung Business Insights. Interpreter can continue working without Wi-Fi or cellular data after the required language packs are downloaded.
That answer applies specifically to translation. Galaxy AI is a hybrid system: Samsung classifies translation as on-device, while features such as summarizing, formatting, correction and some image editing may use remote servers. Your Galaxy’s model, software version, language and region determine which functions are available.
The direct answer: translated conversations are processed on-device
Samsung’s support documentation says, “Live Translate, however, makes use of on-device AI only.” Samsung Business Insights similarly states that Live Translate and Interpreter are “processed completely within an on-device AI engine.” In practical terms, the speech recognition, translation and translated text or audio for these two features are intended to run on the Galaxy device rather than being uploaded to a Samsung server for translation.
This does not mean every part of a call is offline. A normal phone call still needs your carrier or another supported calling connection. It means the translation workload is handled locally after the call audio reaches the phone. Interpreter, which is designed for people speaking face to face, can operate without a data connection once its language resources are installed.

Samsung also says that no third-party app is required for these functions and that on-device AI keeps conversations private. Those are Samsung’s stated privacy and architecture claims, not an independent audit or an accuracy certification.
How Live Translate and Interpreter handle speech
Live Translate for phone calls
Live Translate provides two-way, real-time voice and text translation during calls in a supported phone app. Each participant speaks normally; the phone recognizes the speech, translates it and presents the result in the selected language. Depending on the device and software version, the translated result can be heard, displayed as text, or both.
Because Samsung describes the feature as on-device, the translation model runs on the phone instead of sending the conversation to Samsung’s cloud for processing. The call itself still travels through the underlying phone or calling service, so “on-device translation” should not be read as “the call never leaves the device.” It refers to the AI translation stage.
Samsung says Live Translate is built into supported phone software, so a separate translation app is not required. Availability can vary by phone model, One UI or other software build, language pair, region and the particular phone app being used.

Interpreter for face-to-face conversations
Interpreter is intended for in-person conversations. It displays a split-screen transcript so each person can read the conversation in their own language, and it can speak the translated result aloud. Samsung’s description is explicit: “For in-person conversations, Interpreter with Galaxy AI can both audibly translate and display a transcript of the conversation all on the phone.”
The local workflow includes speech capture through the phone’s microphones, recognition of the spoken language, translation into the selected language, transcript rendering and optional spoken playback. Since those stages are performed on the device, the conversation does not need to be sent to Samsung’s servers for the translation step.
Listening through Galaxy Buds
Samsung’s Galaxy AI materials say Galaxy Buds can be used to listen to Interpreter translations. The earbuds are an output option; they do not change Samsung’s stated processing location. The Galaxy phone remains the device running Interpreter, while the buds provide a more convenient way to hear the translated audio.

“Galaxy AI” is a collection of functions, not one processing architecture. Samsung’s support information separates translation from other tools. Translation is listed as on-device, while auto-formatting, auto-summarizing, auto-correction and some image-editing operations may use cloud processing.

| Galaxy AI function | Samsung’s stated processing model | What that means for connectivity |
|---|---|---|
| Live Translate | On-device AI only | The call still needs its normal phone connection; translation processing is local. |
| Interpreter | On-device AI | Can work without cellular data or Wi-Fi after language packs are downloaded. |
| Auto-formatting | May use cloud processing | Some advanced behavior may require remote processing unless device-only mode limits it. |
| Auto-summarizing | May use cloud processing | Functionality can change when cloud processing is restricted. |
| Auto-correction | May use cloud processing | Available behavior depends on the feature and device settings. |
| Image editing | Some operations may use cloud processing | Cloud-dependent edits can be limited by a device-only setting. |
The table is a processing distinction, not a promise that every Galaxy model includes every feature. Samsung says availability varies, and the exact behavior can change with software updates and regional releases.
Can Interpreter work without Wi-Fi?
Yes, according to Samsung, after you download the necessary language packs. The initial download normally requires an internet connection, but the subsequent speech and translation process can run locally. This makes Interpreter useful in places with weak reception, during travel when roaming is disabled, or in airplane mode where the phone’s local features remain available.
Prepare Interpreter for offline use
- Update the phone first. Install the latest software offered for your specific Galaxy model. Translation features and language availability are tied to the software build.
- Connect to Wi-Fi for setup. Open Interpreter on the phone and select the languages you expect to use. When prompted, download each language pack. Downloading over Wi-Fi avoids using mobile data for the initial package transfer.
- Check both directions. For a two-way conversation, install the language used by each speaker. A pack for only one language will not provide a complete two-language exchange.
- Test before you travel. Temporarily disable Wi-Fi and mobile data, then start an Interpreter session. Confirm that speech recognition, the split-screen transcript and spoken playback work as expected.
- Keep storage available. Language packs are stored locally. If a download fails, free storage, reconnect to a stable network and retry from Interpreter’s language-selection screen.
Offline operation applies to Interpreter after the packs are present. It does not make a carrier call work without a carrier connection, and it does not guarantee that every Galaxy AI feature is available offline.

Samsung’s stated position is that Live Translate and Interpreter inputs remain within the phone during translation. Samsung also says personal data is not stored long-term or used to train its AI models, including for Galaxy AI features that use remote servers. These statements should be understood as Samsung’s policy claims; they are not the same as an independent inspection of the software or network traffic.

On-device processing reduces one important exposure: the audio and transcript required for translation do not need to be uploaded to Samsung’s cloud translation service. It does not eliminate every privacy consideration. A phone call can still be handled by a carrier or calling provider, the phone may retain local call or app data according to its settings, and another person in the conversation may record audio independently.
For sensitive conversations, use the phone’s normal security controls in addition to relying on the translation architecture. Keep the device updated, use a strong screen lock, review microphone permissions and avoid leaving transcripts visible on an unlocked screen.
The “Process data only on device” setting
Galaxy AI settings include a control labeled Process data only on device. Enabling it tells supported Galaxy AI features not to use cloud processing. Samsung warns that restricting cloud processing can limit some advanced functions. The setting is therefore a privacy-versus-capability choice, not a requirement for Live Translate or Interpreter, which Samsung already describes as on-device.
Recommended Free Tools
When to enable device-only processing
- Choose it if your priority is minimizing transmission of Galaxy AI inputs to remote servers.
- Use it on a managed or restricted network where cloud AI is not permitted.
- Enable it before handling confidential material if you accept that some unrelated AI tools may lose features.
What may change after enabling it
Cloud-dependent options can become unavailable, slower or less capable. Samsung does not promise identical results for every feature in device-only mode, and the impact differs by model and software version. If a summarization, formatting, correction or editing tool stops working, check whether it requires cloud processing before treating the behavior as a fault.

Device, language and regional requirements
There is no universal “Galaxy AI phone” specification that guarantees translation support. Samsung’s support pages list compatible Galaxy phones and tablets and note that availability can vary. Check all of the following for your exact device:
- Model: Older or lower-tier Galaxy hardware may not support Live Translate or Interpreter.
- Software version: The feature can depend on a particular One UI or system release.
- Language: A language may be available for one feature but not another, or may require a separate download.
- Region: Samsung can enable features differently by market.
- Phone app: Live Translate coverage depends on the supported calling application.
- Account and service configuration: Some Galaxy AI functions can require Samsung account or service conditions that vary by release.
Samsung Mobile Press announced on October 14, 2026, that Live Translate support had expanded to 24 languages. That is the announced total, not a guarantee that all 24 languages are available on every model or in every country. Verify the language list shown on your phone and Samsung’s current support page for your region.
What is known about translation quality?
Samsung’s official material establishes the processing architecture and broad availability claims, but it does not provide an independent head-to-head accuracy result in the information available for this article. There is no defensible percentage that can be applied to all languages, accents, noise conditions or technical terms.

Expect quality to vary with microphone placement, background noise, speaking speed, overlapping speech, regional accents, names and specialist vocabulary. A split-screen transcript can make mistakes easier to notice, but a spoken translation may still sound plausible when a word was misrecognized. For legal, medical, financial or safety-critical conversations, confirm important details with a qualified human interpreter.
When evaluating any translation service, compare processing location, offline support, supported languages, compatible hardware, call and app coverage, privacy and retention policies, and independent quality evidence. Samsung’s materials answer the first two questions for its own features, but they do not establish an independent accuracy ranking against other services.
Troubleshooting translated conversations
Live Translate is missing from a call
- Confirm that the Galaxy model and software build support Live Translate.
- Check whether the call is placed through a supported phone app.
- Verify that the selected language pair is available in your region.
- Install pending system updates and restart the phone.
Interpreter says a language is unavailable
- Connect to Wi-Fi and download the missing language pack.
- Check free storage if the download repeatedly fails.
- Confirm that the language is supported on your model and software version, rather than relying on the 24-language headline.
Interpreter will not work offline
- Make sure both language packs were completely downloaded before disconnecting.
- Test with Wi-Fi and mobile data disabled to identify a missing local resource.
- Re-download a damaged pack after reconnecting to a stable network.
Another Galaxy AI feature stopped working
Look at the Process data only on device control. If the affected feature uses cloud processing, device-only mode may intentionally restrict it. Re-enable cloud processing only if your privacy requirements allow it.
Bottom line
For the specific question of translated conversations, Samsung’s answer is clear: Live Translate and Interpreter process translation on the Galaxy device rather than in Samsung’s cloud. Interpreter can work offline after language packs are downloaded. Galaxy AI as a whole remains hybrid, so other tools may use cloud processing, and enabling device-only processing can reduce their functionality. Confirm support for your model, software build, language and region before relying on the feature in an important conversation.
