Yes, lowering Android’s animation scales makes screen transitions finish sooner, and that can make a phone feel more responsive during everyday navigation. It does not make the processor faster, speed up network connections, or shorten how long apps take to load. The change lives in Developer options, where three separate sliders control how long interface animations last.
What the setting changes
Android uses animations when windows open and close, when one screen replaces another, and when some interface elements move. Developer options exposes three controls that set how long those effects take. Lowering a control makes the matching animations play faster.

Android’s official consumer guide says reducing these scales can make your device feel faster and more responsive (published June 26, 2025). Android Developers documentation describes the same controls as playback-speed settings and states that a lower scale results in a faster speed.
How to find and change the animation scales
Menu names and placement vary by manufacturer and Android version. The steps below follow the route described in Android’s consumer guide, which you can check against the official article.

- Open Settings, then tap About phone (or About tablet). On some devices, Build number sits under Android Version or Software Information.
- Tap Build number seven times until a message confirms that Developer options are enabled.
- Return to Settings and open Developer options. On many phones it appears under System. If you cannot find it, use the Settings search bar and type “Developer options.”
- Scroll to the drawing or animation section and locate Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale.
- Open each control and choose a lower value. Start with a moderate reduction and adjust to taste.
- Use the phone normally for a few minutes: open apps, switch between them, and scroll through menus.
Changing the values is a matter of personal preference. Android’s guidance supports reducing the scales but does not name one best number for every phone or user. Some people find the original motion easier to follow, and that is a valid choice. To undo the change, return each slider to the value it had before.
What it does not change
The setting affects how animations look, not how the device performs underneath. Keep these limits in mind:

- Processor and memory: The setting does not add processing power or free up memory.
- Network speed: Downloads, streaming, and web page loading are not affected.
- App loading time: An app that takes several seconds to open still takes that long. Only the visual transitions around the launch are shorter.
- Background work: Tasks such as syncing or updates are not shown to complete sooner.
The phrase “feel faster” describes perception. Shorter animations can make a phone seem snappier, but the sources do not measure how much time is saved or show that the phone completes tasks any faster.
Cautions before you change anything
Developer options are advanced settings. Android’s consumer guide warns that changing options without understanding them can affect device stability. Change only the three animation controls described here, and leave other developer settings alone.

If the phone is slow in ways that go beyond transitions, such as apps that freeze or storage that fills quickly, the animation scales will not address those problems. Google’s Speed up a slow Android device help page covers broader causes and fixes, and it advises contacting the device manufacturer if those steps do not help.
In short, lowering the animation scales is a low-risk way to shorten visual transitions, and it is fully reversible. It is not a performance upgrade.
