Yes—supported Call of Duty releases let PlayStation, Xbox, and PC players play together through cross-play. Progression can also follow you between those platforms when every platform account is linked to the same Activision account. The exact supported modes, console generations, and cross-play controls depend on the specific Call of Duty title.
Cross-play and cross-progression are different features
Cross-play determines who can join the same online match. In a cross-play-enabled Call of Duty release, a player on PlayStation can be matched with players on Xbox and PC, subject to that title’s supported platforms and modes.
Cross-progression determines where your game progress is stored. Activision says that, in crossplay-enabled games, progression is stored on the Activision account. You can therefore play on any platform linked to that account and carry the progression over, rather than starting a separate progression track on each console or on PC.
Those features are related but not identical. A title may support cross-play in particular modes while exposing different progression rules or controls. Always check the documentation for the exact release you own.

- Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of Round-Based Zombies, the fan-favorite mode where players will take down hordes of the undead in two brand-new maps at launch. Post-launch, players can look forward to even more exciting maps and groundbreaking experiences dropping into both Multiplayer and Zombies.
Which platforms can play together?
PlayStation, Xbox, and PC
Official Call of Duty documentation describes cross-play between the major supported platform groups: PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows PC. Modern Warfare documentation specifically describes PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC players playing together after cross-play was introduced. Newer releases can support additional console generations, but the generation combination is title-specific.
That means a PS5 player and an Xbox player can play Call of Duty together when both are using a release and mode that support cross-play. It does not mean that every Call of Duty game, mode, or platform edition automatically supports the same combination.
Console generations matter
Some releases have separate versions for older and newer consoles, while others share progression across generations. Black Ops 6 support documentation states that progression carries across all platforms linked to the same Activision account, regardless of console generation. That statement applies to the documented Black Ops 6 behavior; it should not be generalized to every older or future release.

The Activision account is the shared identity
When a supported game is connected to one Activision account, that account is the place where the game’s progression is associated. Linking a PlayStation Network, Xbox, or PC platform account to that same Activision account lets the game recognize the same player profile on each linked platform.
The important distinction is between the platform account used to sign in and the Activision account used by Call of Duty. Signing in with different Activision accounts on different platforms creates separate identities, even if the person, console, or email address is the same. To share progression, use one Activision account consistently.

What “progression carries over” means
For a supported title, carrying progression over means the account-based progress documented for that release is available when you launch the game on another linked platform. Black Ops 6 documentation covers Multiplayer and Zombies progression, and it also covers Warzone participation beginning with Season 01. The documentation does not establish one universal item-by-item transfer list for every Call of Duty release, so the individual title’s support page remains authoritative for particular unlocks, modes, and entitlements.
Release-by-release comparison
| Release or documentation | Cross-play evidence | Progression behavior | Mode or generation notes | Cross-play control |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Modern Warfare | PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC players are documented as able to play together. | Progression is stored on the Activision account. | Documentation cited here covers the PS4/Xbox One/PC cross-play introduction; other editions or generations are not stated. | Not stated in the cited documentation. |
| Modern Warfare III | Cross-play support is title-specific; the cited documentation concerns its in-game control. | Use the same Activision account on linked platforms for supported progression. | Exact mode list and generation matrix are not stated in the cited documentation. | PlayStation players can control the cross-play option through in-game Settings. |
| Black Ops 6 | Documentation describes a cross-play-enabled release for linked PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms. | Progression carries across all platforms linked to the same Activision account, regardless of console generation. | Multiplayer and Zombies are covered; Warzone participation begins in Season 01. | Exact platform-by-platform toggle behavior is not stated in the cited documentation. |
The table reflects the documented examples rather than a promise that every Call of Duty release has identical support. A title’s store version, mode, console generation, and current season can all affect the result.

How to set up cross-play and cross-progression
- Choose the exact Call of Duty release and platform versions. Confirm that the release supports cross-play and identify which modes you intend to use. Do not assume that support documented for one game applies to another.
- Sign in to the Activision account you intend to keep. Use the same Activision account on every platform. If you already have progression, identify the account that contains it before linking anything else.
- Link your platform accounts to that Activision account. Link the PlayStation account, Xbox account, and PC account you plan to use. The goal is one Activision account with all of the relevant platform identities attached, not one Activision account per device.
- Launch the game on each platform and verify the displayed identity. Check that the game is signed in to the intended Activision account before entering a mode. If a platform prompts you to create or use another account, stop and resolve the sign-in choice rather than accepting a second profile.
- Check the title’s cross-play setting. Open the game’s in-game Settings and look for the cross-play option if the release exposes one. Modern Warfare III documentation specifically says PlayStation players can control this option through Settings. Other releases and platforms may present different controls or may not expose the same toggle.
- Test with the mode you actually want to play. Invite the other platform’s player and confirm that the mode is supported. A successful connection in one mode does not prove that every mode in the release uses identical cross-play or progression rules.
Can you disable cross-play?
Sometimes. Cross-play controls are not universal across Call of Duty games or platforms. Modern Warfare III documentation confirms an in-game cross-play option for PlayStation players, but the cited material does not establish an identical switch for every Xbox or PC configuration, nor does it promise that every release offers a toggle.
Look in the current title’s in-game Settings rather than relying on a menu path from another Call of Duty game. If no cross-play control is present, the release may manage matchmaking differently, limit the setting to a particular platform, or require cross-play for the mode you are using. Disabling a setting, where available, can also change the pool of players you can match with; the title’s own notice is the best guide to that consequence.
What to do when progression does not appear
Check the Activision account first
The most common account-side explanation is that one platform is signed in to a different Activision account. Compare the account identity shown in the game on each platform and make sure the account containing the existing progression is the one linked everywhere.

Confirm that the platform account is linked
A console or PC account that is not linked to the intended Activision account cannot access that account’s shared progression. Review the account’s linked-platform entries and correct the association before launching the game again.

Confirm the release and mode
Cross-progression is documented per title and, in some cases, per mode or seasonal integration. Black Ops 6 documentation covers Multiplayer and Zombies and identifies Warzone participation beginning in Season 01. If you are moving between a base game, a related Warzone experience, or a different Call of Duty release, verify that the progression you expect is included in that title’s documentation.
Allow for generation and edition differences
Black Ops 6 explicitly documents progression across linked platforms regardless of console generation. That is a documented Black Ops 6 rule, not evidence that every earlier release treats generations identically. Check the game’s support information before changing editions or moving between an older and newer console version.
Do not create a replacement account as a quick fix
Creating another Activision account can make the separation worse by placing new progress on a second identity. Identify the original account and use it consistently across the platforms you want to share.

PS5 and Xbox players want to play together
They can do so when both own a cross-play-enabled release and use a mode that supports cross-play. Each player should link the relevant platform account to an Activision account and follow the title’s party or invite process. The fact that both consoles are current-generation hardware does not, by itself, establish support for every Call of Duty release.

Progress transfers from Xbox to PC
Progress can transfer when the Xbox and PC platform accounts are linked to the same Activision account and the title documents cross-progression. Launching the PC version with a different Activision identity will not retrieve the Xbox progression.
A player wants separate profiles on two platforms
Separate Activision accounts keep progression separate. That may be intentional, but it is the opposite of cross-progression. Decide which account should own the progress before linking additional platforms.
A player wants to avoid cross-platform matches
Check the in-game Settings for a cross-play control. The documented Modern Warfare III behavior gives PlayStation players such a control, but availability and effect vary by title and platform. If the option is absent, consult the release-specific support information rather than assuming a hidden universal switch.
Limits of the general rule
- Support is release-specific: Official documentation describes cross-play-enabled games, not every Call of Duty release ever made.
- Mode support can differ: A release may document progression for particular modes. Black Ops 6 documentation names Multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone with Warzone participation beginning in Season 01.
- Console generations can differ: Black Ops 6 explicitly covers linked platforms regardless of console generation; other releases require their own confirmation.
- Controls can differ: Modern Warfare III documents a PlayStation cross-play option in Settings, but the same control is not established here for every platform or title.
- Platform ownership is separate from account progression: Linking accounts does not by itself establish that a game license, edition-specific content, or every entitlement is available on another platform. Verify the release’s own terms for anything beyond the documented progression behavior.
A practical checklist before switching platforms
- Identify the exact Call of Duty release, mode, and platform generation.
- Confirm that the release supports cross-play for the players and mode involved.
- Use one Activision account as the shared identity.
- Link every PlayStation, Xbox, and PC account you intend to use to that Activision account.
- Verify the signed-in identity in-game on each platform.
- Check Settings for a cross-play control; do not assume another game’s menu or behavior applies.
- If progress is missing, stop using a newly created account and recheck the original account and linked-platform list.
Bottom line for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC players
Call of Duty supports cross-play and cross-progression when the specific release supports those features. PlayStation, Xbox, and PC players can play together in documented cross-play-enabled games, while progression follows the Activision account that has all relevant platform accounts linked. Black Ops 6 documents cross-generation progression for Multiplayer and Zombies and includes Warzone participation beginning in Season 01; Modern Warfare documents PS4, Xbox One, and PC cross-play; and Modern Warfare III documents a PlayStation cross-play control in Settings. Treat those as title-specific rules, and verify the release and mode you actually plan to use.
