Yes for Multiplayer; not confirmed for Campaign. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (MW4) Multiplayer is officially announced with cross-play and cross-progression across its platform ecosystem. Activision also says online game progression is stored on your Activision account, so you can continue that progression on another linked platform. Campaign is presented as a separate single-player mode: no official MW4 announcement confirms campaign cross-play, and current MW4 documentation does not confirm that campaign saves or completion progress synchronize between platforms.
That means friends should be able to play MW4 Multiplayer together from supported PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Nintendo platforms, provided their accounts are linked correctly. If you move platforms, your online progression can follow you through the same Activision account. Treat campaign transfer as unresolved until Activision publishes a direct statement.

MW4 cross-play and cross-progression at a glance
| Mode or feature | Current official position | What it means for players |
|---|---|---|
| Multiplayer cross-play | Confirmed | Players on the announced platform ecosystem can play Multiplayer together. |
| Multiplayer cross-progression | Confirmed | Online progression is stored with the Activision account and can continue on another linked platform. |
| Campaign cross-play | Not announced | Campaign is a single-player offering, so there is no confirmed cross-platform campaign session. |
| Campaign save synchronization | Not stated in current MW4 sources | Do not assume that campaign checkpoints, completion status or story unlocks will transfer. |
| Battle Pass and unlocked online content | Account-based across linked platforms | Those items follow the Activision account, subject to the account-linking rules. |
| COD Points and some purchases | Can remain platform-specific | A balance or purchase made on one platform may not be usable in the same way on another. |
Nintendo’s 2026 announcement is the clearest mode-specific confirmation: it says Multiplayer “will feature cross-play, cross-progression.” Activision’s 2026 account guidance supplies the implementation detail: online progression is stored on the Activision account, and the same account must remain connected to each platform you use.
What Multiplayer cross-play means in MW4
Playing with friends on different platforms
Cross-play allows Multiplayer matchmaking and parties to include players using different systems within the announced MW4 platform ecosystem. The account documentation refers to PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo accounts, which covers the console and PC account types players are likely to use when moving between systems. Cross-play is a Multiplayer feature; the announcement does not extend that statement to the story campaign.

Cross-play is not the same as cross-progression
Cross-play answers, “Can we play the same online matches?” Cross-progression answers, “Will my online account progress still be there when I change platforms?” MW4 officially supports both for Multiplayer, but they solve different problems. You may be able to join a friend on another platform even if you never change your own hardware. If you do change hardware, the progression benefit depends on using the correct Activision account.
What the announcement does not promise
The announcement confirms the feature, not every operational detail. It does not, in the material currently available, specify every matchmaking setting, input-based matchmaking rule, console-generation exception, privacy control or party-management screen. Those details can be supplied later in game-specific support documentation. The confirmed point is narrower and useful: MW4 Multiplayer is designed to play across platforms and to retain online progression through the Activision account.
How Multiplayer progression follows your Activision account
Activision requires an Activision account for online play. Its support guidance says game progression is stored on that account, allowing online progression to continue on another linked platform. Use this sequence when setting up MW4 or changing devices:
Rank #2
- Call of Duty: Modern Wafare II PS5
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is the sequel to 2019’s blockbuster Modern Warfare.
- Featuring the return of the iconic, team leader Captain John Price, the fearless John "Soap" MacTavish, the seasoned Sergeant Kyle "Gaz” Garrick, and the lone wolf himself, fan favorite Simon “Ghost” Riley, players will witness what makes Task Force 141 the legendary squad it is today.
- Some features may require an internet connection and an online subscription
- Sign in to the Activision account you intend to keep. If you already play other Activision online titles, identify the account that contains your established profile before launching MW4.
- Link the platform account you are using. The relevant account types named by Activision are PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo. Complete the link while signed in to the intended Activision account.
- Launch MW4 Multiplayer while online. The game should associate your online profile with the Activision account required for online play.
- Use that same Activision account on the next platform. Sign in before linking the new PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net, Steam or Nintendo account. This is the step that preserves continuity.
- Check your online profile before spending currency. Confirm that your level, Battle Pass state and unlocked content appear before buying anything on the new platform. This catches an account-linking mistake early.
The account-linking mistake that breaks continuity
Activision warns that progress will not carry over if your PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net, Steam or Nintendo account is linked to a different Activision account. The hardware is not the deciding factor; the account relationship is. Creating or selecting a second Activision account can make a new platform appear to have no history, even when you previously earned progression elsewhere.
If progress is missing after a platform move, stop playing and avoid unlinking accounts impulsively. First sign out, verify the Activision account identity and inspect which platform account is connected. Linking the correct platform account to the original Activision account is the relevant remedy; the support warning means a different account cannot inherit the old progression automatically.
Does campaign progress transfer between platforms?
Campaign cross-play
There is no official MW4 statement confirming campaign cross-play. Activision’s product information separates Campaign and Multiplayer as distinct offerings, and Nintendo’s cross-play language specifically describes Multiplayer. Campaign is therefore best treated as a single-player mode rather than a cross-platform cooperative activity.

Campaign saves and completion status
Current MW4 sources do not explicitly confirm synchronization of campaign checkpoints, completed missions, difficulty records, collectibles or story unlocks between platforms. The fact that Multiplayer progression is stored on an Activision account does not establish that local or campaign save data is stored there as well. Do not promise yourself a seamless campaign hand-off from one console or PC to another until Activision documents it directly.
Why older Call of Duty behavior is not enough
Previous Call of Duty support pages or experiences may be useful context, but they are not an MW4-specific confirmation. Platform save systems, account services and mode architecture can change between releases. For this game, the defensible distinction is: Multiplayer online progression is confirmed to follow the Activision account; campaign save transfer remains unconfirmed.
What carries over, and what can stay on one platform
| Item | Expected behavior when using the same Activision account | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Multiplayer level and online progression | Stored on the Activision account and available on another linked platform. | It will not follow if the platform account is connected to a different Activision account. |
| Battle Pass progress | Follows the Activision account across linked platforms. | Access still depends on owning or accessing the relevant game and content on the platform in use. |
| Unlocked online content | Activision says unlocked content is tied to the Activision account across linked platforms. | Do not confuse account entitlement with a transferable currency balance. |
| COD Points balance | Some balances can remain platform-specific. | The support guidance does not make every balance universally spendable across platforms. |
| Purchases | Some purchases can remain tied to the platform where they were made. | Check the platform and item rules before buying with a planned platform switch. |
| Campaign saves | Not stated in current MW4 sources. | There is no direct confirmation of cross-platform campaign-save synchronization. |
The practical rule is to separate account-based online content from platform-based commerce. Your online profile, Battle Pass progress and unlocked content are the areas Activision describes as account-linked. COD Points and some purchases are the areas where platform restrictions can still apply.

Switching platforms: practical scenarios
PlayStation to Xbox
Sign in to the original Activision account before linking the Xbox account. Your confirmed Multiplayer progression, Battle Pass progress and account-tied unlocked content should be associated with that Activision profile. COD Points or purchases may not behave identically because some are platform-specific. Campaign saves are not confirmed to transfer.
Xbox to PlayStation
The same rule applies in reverse: use the existing Activision account rather than creating a new one for PlayStation. Verify the online profile before making purchases. If the campaign is important, keep the original platform available until Activision publishes a clear save-transfer policy.

Console to PC through Battle.net or Steam
Link the Battle.net or Steam account to the Activision account that holds your MW4 Multiplayer history. A new PC account connected to a different Activision profile will not inherit the old progression. The account guidance covers online progression, not campaign-save migration.
Moving to a Nintendo platform
Use the same Activision account when connecting the Nintendo account. Nintendo’s announcement is the source that expressly confirms MW4 Multiplayer cross-play and cross-progression, while Activision’s account rules explain how continuity is maintained. Treat COD Points, purchases and campaign saves according to the platform-specific and unconfirmed categories above.
Platform comparison for MW4 players

| Xbox | Confirmed as part of MW4 Multiplayer cross-play | Confirmed through the linked Activision account | Not stated in current MW4 sources |
| Battle.net | Confirmed as part of MW4 Multiplayer cross-play | Confirmed through the linked Activision account | Not stated in current MW4 sources |

This table describes account and feature support, not a promise that every edition, storefront or regional SKU has identical content. Confirm the edition and platform listing for your market before purchase. Activision lists MW4 for release on October 23, 2026; availability and final platform details can be updated as launch approaches.
Troubleshooting missing Multiplayer progression
You see a fresh profile on the new platform
- Check the email or sign-in identity of the Activision account currently displayed.
- Confirm that the platform account is linked to the original Activision account, not a newly created one.
- Close and relaunch MW4 after correcting the account link so the online profile can refresh.
- Do not keep earning progress on the wrong profile while trying to recover the old one; that can make it harder to tell which account contains which history.
Your Battle Pass or unlocked content is missing
Verify the account first, then check that the game is connected to the internet and that the relevant content is available on the platform edition you launched. Activision describes Battle Pass progress and unlocked content as account-tied, but that does not eliminate platform entitlement checks.

Your COD Points total is different
A difference does not necessarily mean that Multiplayer progression was lost. Activision specifically warns that some COD Points balances and purchases remain platform-specific. Check the original platform before assuming an account-transfer failure, and avoid buying the same item twice while the balances are being reconciled.
You expected the campaign to resume
There is currently no direct MW4 confirmation that campaign saves synchronize across platforms. Keep using the original platform for the campaign or maintain a local backup where the platform supports one. Look for a future Activision statement that names campaign saves specifically rather than relying on the Multiplayer cross-progression announcement.
What to confirm before buying or switching
- Use the Activision account you intend to keep for the life of your Multiplayer profile.
- Write down which PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net, Steam or Nintendo account is linked before changing hardware.
- Expect Multiplayer cross-play and online cross-progression, but do not budget on campaign-save transfer.
- Assume COD Points and some purchases may stay with their original platform.
- Check the October 23, 2026 release listing, edition, region and storefront before purchase because those details determine which platform entitlement you receive.
For the question most players are asking, the answer is clear: MW4 Multiplayer supports cross-play and cross-progression. The campaign does not currently have an equivalent official promise, so treat its cross-play as unavailable or inapplicable and its save synchronization as unconfirmed.
