That distinction matters because “Call of Duty on Switch 2” is a broad description. The confirmed feature set comes from the Modern Warfare 4 announcement. It should not be read as a blanket promise that every older title, spin-off or future release will use identical matchmaking, account or voice-chat rules.
How cross-play works

In practical terms, a Switch 2 player should be able to enter supported multiplayer modes with friends or opponents using the other announced platforms, including PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
The announcement establishes cross-play as a multiplayer feature; it does not publish a mode-by-mode matrix. Until Activision posts the final launch notes, do not assume that every mode, limited-time playlist, private test or competitive rule will use exactly the same matchmaking pool. The safest interpretation is that the normal supported multiplayer experience is designed for cross-platform play.

What you need for a cross-play session
- An Activision account for the online game and platform identity.
- A Nintendo Switch Online membership for Switch 2 online features.
- An internet connection.
- The same current game version as the people you are joining.
Activision lists the Activision account, Nintendo Switch Online membership and internet connection as requirements for the Switch 2 beta. Those requirements are also the practical baseline for online multiplayer at launch.
How cross-progression works
Use one Activision account everywhere
Cross-progression is explicitly listed for Modern Warfare 4 on Nintendo’s game page. Activision’s account documentation describes the mechanism: progression follows the Activision account that is linked to the player’s platforms. To carry progress to Switch 2, sign in to the same Activision account you use on your other platform rather than creating a new account during setup.
“Progression” means the game identity and progress associated with that Activision account. The announcement does not provide a complete list of which purchases, platform entitlements or store items transfer in every case, so do not infer that a platform-specific entitlement automatically becomes a Switch 2 entitlement.

Set up continuity before you start
- Identify your existing Activision account. Use the account that already contains your Call of Duty progress. If you have more than one account, verify which one is connected to your current platform before launching on Switch 2.
- Complete the platform-linking flow. When Activision asks you to connect a Nintendo account, use the Nintendo account on your Switch 2 and the same Activision account used elsewhere. Follow the account prompts shown by the current Activision service; labels can change before launch.
- Sign in during the first game launch. Do not bypass the Activision sign-in by creating a second account if you expect your existing progression to appear.
- Check the account identity before playing. Confirm that the displayed Activision name or account details match the account used on your other platform. If the wrong identity appears, stop before earning progress on the new account.
- Repeat the same account on other platforms. Cross-progression depends on all of the platforms being linked to the same Activision account, not merely on using the same Nintendo profile or console owner.
If your progress is missing
- Check that Switch 2 is signed in to the intended Activision account, not a newly created one.
- Confirm that the other platform is linked to that same Activision account.
- Close and restart the game after correcting the sign-in so the account state can refresh.
- Do not unlink accounts casually; preserve the original links until you have identified which account owns the progress.
If the account is correct and progress still does not appear, use Activision’s account-support process with the account details shown in the game. Nintendo Switch 2 cross-progression is a confirmed feature, but the exact support workflow and menu wording can change before the October launch.
Voice chat on Nintendo Switch 2
GameChat provides Switch 2 voice communication
Nintendo describes GameChat as a Switch 2 feature for voice and video chat, screen sharing and playing games together. Voice uses the console’s built-in microphone, so you do not need a headset or camera simply to speak in a GameChat session. Nintendo says a compatible USB camera is optional when you want video.
A GameChat session can include up to 12 users. Up to four participants can share their screen or video at the same time, according to Nintendo’s current support guide. Those limits describe GameChat as a console communication feature; they are not a claim about the number of players in a Modern Warfare 4 match or squad.

The Nintendo Switch Online requirement
Nintendo Switch Online is required for online features, including GameChat. Activision also lists an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for the Switch 2 beta. You therefore need both an internet connection and the appropriate membership before expecting online multiplayer or GameChat to work.
GameChat is not automatically the game’s squad channel
Do not treat GameChat and Modern Warfare 4’s in-game voice system as the same feature. Nintendo’s support information says GameChat is separate from the Nintendo Switch App, and Switch 2-exclusive games do not support voice chat through that app. The official Modern Warfare 4 announcements do not say whether the game’s built-in voice channel carries conversations between Switch 2 players and teammates on PC, PlayStation or Xbox.

Until such a statement appears, describe cross-platform voice as unconfirmed rather than guaranteed.

What to do if you cannot hear anyone
- Verify that the Nintendo Switch Online membership is active on the account being used.
- Confirm that the console has an internet connection.
- Start or join a GameChat session with approved friends and test the built-in microphone outside the match.
- If GameChat works but the in-game squad channel does not, treat those as separate systems and check the final Modern Warfare 4 voice-chat instructions rather than assuming the microphone is defective.
