Yes. Argentina generally allows its nationals to acquire another nationality without automatically losing Argentine nationality. But keeping a passport and using it to enter or leave Argentina are separate matters: Argentina’s migration authority, the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones (DNM), sets different border-document procedures according to the other country’s agreement status, your residence and your declared intention. The guidance does not say that acquiring Argentine nationality automatically cancels a passport issued by another country.
Does Argentina allow dual citizenship?
Argentina generally permits dual nationality. The DNM’s 1984 migration instructions state: “los argentinos no pierden su nacionalidad por haberse naturalizado en un país extranjero” (“Argentines do not lose their nationality by having naturalized in a foreign country”). That is a clear statement of the general retention principle, but it comes from historical guidance; it should not be confused with current border procedures.
The current consolidated Ley 346 identifies Argentine nationals, including people born in Argentina subject to the law’s stated exception for children of diplomats, and certain children of native-born Argentines born abroad who opt for Argentine nationality. The law’s naturalization provisions concern how a foreign national can become Argentine; they do not make an existing Argentine’s retention of nationality conditional on those naturalization requirements.
What happens to your existing passport?
The official sources do not say that a passport from your other country is automatically cancelled when you become Argentine, or that an Argentine passport is cancelled when you naturalize elsewhere. Passport validity is a matter of the issuing country. The Argentine guidance instead addresses how migration authorities may treat a foreign passport or other travel document at Argentina’s border.

That distinction matters: holding two valid passports does not mean you can use either one interchangeably for every Argentine entry or exit. The DNM’s dual-nationality guidance sets out different procedures based on your circumstances.
Which passport should you use at Argentina’s border?
The DNM separates cases by whether Argentina has a dual-nationality agreement with the country of the acquired nationality, and also considers residence and declared intention. Its page discusses entry (ingreso) and exit (egreso) separately. Before travel, check the current DNM instructions or ask an Argentine consulate which category applies to you.

If Argentina has an agreement with your other country
The DNM lists Spain, Italy, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama and Sweden among agreement countries. It lists the United States only for naturalizations through 20 October 1981, so later U.S. naturalizations should not be assumed to fall in that category. The page describes procedures that vary according to whether the Argentine national resides in Argentina or abroad. For Argentine residents in this category, it says departure may be made with the acquired nationality’s valid travel document together with Argentine identity documentation; re-entry calls for a valid Argentine travel document. The guidance also describes annotations that may be made on the foreign document.
If Argentina has no agreement with your other country
The DNM says Argentine nationals naturalized in a country without an agreement are treated as Argentines for relevant migration purposes. It specifies Argentine-document requirements for departure and re-entry, while allowing limited procedures to enter or leave using the foreign document in stated circumstances. The precise exception depends on the individual’s situation, so do not rely on the foreign passport alone without confirming the current rule with DNM.

Residence and intention can affect the procedure
The DNM’s categories distinguish people residing in Argentina from those living abroad. It also says that declaring an intention to move permanently to Argentina can affect treatment as Argentine and the documents required for exit. If your residence or plans have changed, confirm which status the authority will apply before travelling.
Can a foreign passport show that you acquired another nationality?
Yes. The 1984 DNM instructions say that migration authorities may infer the acquisition of another nationality from a foreign passport or identity document showing that nationality. This is an evidentiary point for migration proceedings, not a statement that Argentine nationality has been forfeited.

How Argentina’s naturalization rules fit in
For readers who are not yet Argentine, the consolidated Ley 346 text incorporates Decreto 366/2025. Under the updated text, naturalization generally requires an adult to have lived continuously and legally in Argentina for the two years before applying, without departing during that period, or to establish a qualifying relevant investment. Applications are handled by DNM, which coordinates with RENAPER for the Argentine identity document. These are acquisition rules, not a condition for an Argentine national to keep nationality after acquiring another one.

There is also historical context: Ley 23059 restored Ley 346 after repealing former Ley 21.795. It provides for people whose nationality had been cancelled under that former law to recover Argentine nationality by operation of law, with a separate qualification concerning citizenship rights.
