Yes. Apple Music on Apple TV 4K supports Lossless audio and Dolby Atmos, but they are separate features with different requirements. Lossless is enabled in Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality and Apple’s documented setup uses an HDMI connection to an AV receiver. Dolby Atmos has its own setting and requires Atmos-capable content plus a compatible television, soundbar, AV receiver or supported HomePod arrangement. Hi-Res Lossless is limited to Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later).
What Apple TV 4K supports
Apple Music on Apple TV 4K can deliver two different kinds of higher-quality playback:
- Lossless: music is delivered using Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) rather than a lossy compressed stream. The Apple TV settings guide lists Lossless at up to 24-bit/48 kHz.
- Hi-Res Lossless: ALAC at up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Apple’s current lossless support article says this tier is available on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later).
- Dolby Atmos: an immersive audio format selected separately from the Lossless control. It works only when the song is offered in Atmos and the connected audio system supports Atmos playback.
These are not mutually exclusive labels that you switch with one master “best quality” button. Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless belong to the Music app’s Audio Quality controls, while Dolby Atmos has a separate setting. A song can therefore be available in one format but not another, and your equipment may determine which version actually plays.

Requirements Apple specifies
Apple’s published instructions call for three things: an Apple TV 4K running the current tvOS release, an HDMI connection from the Apple TV 4K to an AV receiver, and Lossless selected in the Music settings. The documentation does not require a premium or specially branded HDMI cable; it specifies the HDMI connection and a receiver capable of handling the chosen signal.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The receiver and the rest of the audio chain still matter. Apple notes that support for a particular lossless file depends on the song’s availability, network conditions and speaker capability. Selecting the menu option does not make every Apple Music track lossless or upgrade equipment that cannot reproduce the format.
Step-by-step setup
- Update the Apple TV 4K to the latest tvOS version available for the device.
- Connect the Apple TV 4K to an AV receiver with HDMI. Route the receiver’s output to your television as required by your home-theater wiring.
- On the Apple TV home screen, open Settings.
- Choose Apps, then Music.
- Open Audio Quality and select Lossless.
- Play a track that Apple Music offers in lossless quality and confirm that the receiver and speakers are configured for the intended input.
The setting controls Apple Music playback on that Apple TV. It does not change the audio quality of other apps, and it cannot create a lossless source when the selected song is not supplied in that format.
Standard Lossless versus Hi-Res Lossless
| Tier | Codec and ceiling in Apple’s settings guide | Apple TV 4K availability |
|---|---|---|
| Lossless | ALAC, up to 24-bit/48 kHz | Supported when the documented receiver, connection and content requirements are met |
| Hi-Res Lossless | ALAC, up to 24-bit/192 kHz | Apple’s current support article limits it to Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later) |
The figures in the table are format ceilings, not a promise that every album is mastered at that resolution. Apple Music may provide a given release at a lower rate, and your receiver or speakers may impose a lower practical limit.

The generation qualification matters
Do not apply the Hi-Res Lossless statement to every Apple TV 4K model. Apple’s newer lossless page explicitly says “Hi-Res Lossless is available only on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later).” Some older regional Apple Support excerpts state that Apple TV 4K does not support Hi-Res Lossless, which is why the generation should be identified before troubleshooting. The current generation-specific statement is the safer description of Apple’s present position.
How to enable Dolby Atmos
Compatible audio paths
Dolby Atmos requires both an Atmos version of the song and an audio chain that can decode or render it. Apple lists these supported arrangements:
- One or two HomePod speakers.
- A television that supports Dolby Atmos audio.
- An Atmos-compatible soundbar paired with a television that supports Atmos audio.
- An Atmos-enabled AV receiver connected as part of the television system.
HomePod mini is not a Dolby Atmos setup. A pair of HomePod mini speakers can provide other Apple TV audio features, but Apple’s Atmos guidance specifically excludes that model from Atmos playback.

Turn on Automatic Dolby Atmos
- Update the Apple TV 4K to the current tvOS release.
- Open Settings from the Apple TV home screen.
- Go to Apps > Music.
- Set Dolby Atmos to Automatic.
- Connect the Apple TV 4K to one of the compatible HomePod, television, soundbar or AV-receiver configurations listed above.
- Play a song that Apple Music supplies in Dolby Atmos. The Apple TV will use Atmos when the content and connected system support it.
Automatic does not convert ordinary stereo tracks into genuine Atmos mixes. It tells Apple TV to select Atmos for supported songs when the connected system can handle it. If the system cannot accept the automatically selected format, Apple provides additional audio-format controls under Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format.
How Apple TV chooses the playback format
Apple says Apple TV 4K automatically selects the highest quality supported by both the connected entertainment system and the available content. That means the highest setting in a menu is not always the format you hear. A track may lack an Atmos mix, the receiver may not support the selected signal, or the television and soundbar may not pass Atmos through their connection. In each case, the system uses a format that the content and hardware can actually support.
Lossless and Dolby Atmos compared
| Question | Lossless | Dolby Atmos |
|---|---|---|
| What it changes | Uses ALAC quality tiers, up to the ceilings listed by Apple | Uses an immersive Dolby Atmos mix when one is available |
| Primary menu | Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality | Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos |
| Highest Apple TV 4K qualification | Hi-Res Lossless is limited to 3rd-generation or later Apple TV 4K | No equivalent generation limit is stated in the cited setup guidance; compatible content and audio hardware are required |
| Connection or equipment requirement | Apple’s instructions specify HDMI from Apple TV 4K to an AV receiver; speaker capability also matters | HomePod, an Atmos-capable television, an Atmos soundbar with a compatible television, or an Atmos AV receiver |
| Content requirement | The particular song must be offered in lossless or Hi-Res Lossless | The particular song must have an Apple Music Dolby Atmos version |
In practical terms, Lossless addresses signal fidelity within a conventional channel layout, while Atmos addresses the mix and spatial presentation. Neither setting guarantees a visible improvement if your source, receiver, speakers or television cannot support the relevant format.

Choosing the right connection and equipment
If you use an AV receiver
An AV receiver is the clearest match for Apple’s documented Lossless setup because the instructions explicitly place an HDMI connection between Apple TV 4K and the receiver. For Atmos, the receiver must also be Atmos-enabled, and the television connection must be arranged so that the receiver handles the Apple TV audio path. Check the receiver’s supported formats and input assignment rather than assuming every HDMI input has identical capabilities.
If you use a television’s built-in speakers
For Dolby Atmos, Apple lists a television with Dolby Atmos audio support as a compatible arrangement. The television must actually support Atmos playback; an ordinary stereo television will not gain Atmos merely because the Apple TV setting is Automatic. Apple’s Lossless instructions specifically call for an HDMI connection to an AV receiver, so do not treat built-in television speakers as equivalent to that documented receiver path.

If you use a soundbar
An Atmos soundbar can work when paired with a television that supports Atmos audio. Both pieces are part of the requirement: an Atmos-capable bar connected to a television that cannot pass or render Atmos will not provide the documented setup. Verify the television’s audio-format support and the soundbar’s input capabilities before changing Apple TV settings.

If you use HomePod speakers
Apple lists one or two HomePod speakers for Dolby Atmos playback. HomePod mini is explicitly excluded from Atmos support. The model distinction is therefore important when deciding whether a wireless HomePod arrangement meets the requirement.
About the HDMI cable
Apple’s Lossless instructions require HDMI but do not call for a premium or named cable. Use a suitable HDMI cable that can maintain a reliable connection for your Apple TV and receiver. If the cable or an intermediate device interrupts the audio handshake, changing Music settings will not solve the underlying connection problem.
Troubleshooting when the expected format does not play
The Lossless option is missing or has no effect
- Confirm that the device is an Apple TV 4K, not a different Apple TV model, and install the latest tvOS available for it.
- Recheck the path Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality and make sure Lossless is selected.
- Verify that the Apple TV 4K is connected by HDMI to an AV receiver as specified in Apple’s setup instructions.
- Check the song’s available quality and the receiver and speakers’ capabilities. Apple says network conditions, file availability and speaker capability can affect support.
Hi-Res Lossless is not available
Check the Apple TV 4K generation first. Apple’s current documentation limits Hi-Res Lossless to the 3rd-generation model and later. A software update cannot turn an earlier generation into a model covered by that statement. Also remember that the 24-bit/192 kHz figure is a maximum format ceiling; a release may not be offered at that resolution.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Atmos does not engage
- Confirm that Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos is set to Automatic.
- Make sure the song has an Atmos version. Automatic selection cannot add Atmos to a track that Apple Music does not provide in that format.
- Check the audio chain: Apple’s supported paths are one or two HomePod speakers, an Atmos-capable television, an Atmos soundbar with a compatible television, or an Atmos-enabled AV receiver.
- Exclude HomePod mini as the cause of the mismatch; Apple says that model does not support Dolby Atmos.
The receiver or television reports an incompatible format
Open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format. Apple provides these controls for cases where the system cannot support the automatically selected format. Adjusting the route may allow a compatible format to play, but it cannot overcome missing Atmos hardware, an unsupported Apple TV generation for Hi-Res Lossless, or a song that is not offered in the requested format.
What to check before changing hardware
- Identify the exact Apple TV 4K generation, especially if Hi-Res Lossless is your goal.
- Install current tvOS so the device is using Apple’s current playback and settings behavior.
- List the complete audio chain: Apple TV 4K, HDMI connection, receiver or television, soundbar or speakers. The weakest unsupported link determines the usable format.
- Check the Music settings separately for Lossless and Dolby Atmos; changing one does not enable the other.
- Test with content that Apple Music offers in the format you are evaluating, then verify what the receiver or television reports.
With those checks complete, Apple TV 4K can serve either a lossless ALAC stream or a Dolby Atmos mix when the content, generation, connection and audio equipment meet the corresponding requirements.
