No iPhone FM tuner is documented in Apple’s current iPhone guide. The Music app can play supported radio streams over the internet, but that is different from receiving a local FM broadcast directly over the air. If you need over-the-air FM, use a separate radio receiver.
FM reception and radio streaming are different
An FM tuner receives a local broadcast over the air. A radio stream in an app is delivered through an internet connection, using Wi-Fi or cellular data. Apple’s iPhone guide explains how to listen to radio in Music, but does not describe a built-in over-the-air FM tuning function.
That distinction matters if you need a station when internet access is unavailable: streaming depends on connectivity, while an FM receiver can pick up broadcasts without the phone’s data connection, provided a receivable station is transmitting and the radio has adequate reception.
What you can listen to in the iPhone Music app
Live Apple Music radio
Open the Music app and select Radio. Apple says an Apple Account sign-in is required, but an Apple Music subscription is not required for its live Apple Music radio stations. These stations are live, so you cannot rewind or skip songs.

Broadcast stations
In Music, you can search for a broadcaster by station name, call sign, frequency, or nickname, or browse local and international stations. Apple says a subscription is not required to listen to broadcast stations, but availability depends on the country or region and the individual station.
Curated genre stations
Some curated options, including Stations by Genre, require an Apple Music subscription. Apple’s radio instructions distinguish these from live Apple Music radio and broadcast stations.

Ask Siri to play a supported stream
Siri can request supported streams with phrases such as “Play R&B Now Radio” or “Play Apple Music 1.” This controls playback of a stream; it does not activate an FM receiver.

How to choose between streaming and over-the-air FM

The FCC’s 2017 letter discussing FM reception described it as a potential way to receive emergency information when cellular service is unavailable. That is historical context, not a promise that a particular broadcast or receiver will work in every emergency.

What is known about iPhone FM hardware
Broad claims about an “iPhone FM chip” need a model and date attached. In a November 13, 2017 letter, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai wrote that “Most, but not all, cellphones have an FM tuner as part of the chipset that enables Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.” That was a general statement about cellphones, not a model-by-model finding about iPhones.
Apple’s response, reported at the time, said the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 did not have FM chips or antennas designed for FM reception. The statement applies to those models and that date; it does not establish the hardware configuration of every later iPhone generation. Apple’s current guide documents streaming radio rather than an over-the-air FM tuning feature.

Can an accessory add FM tuning to an iPhone?
The available sources do not verify a current iPhone-compatible add-on FM tuner. Do not assume that a generic audio adapter, dongle, or headphones can make an iPhone receive FM over the air. For direct FM reception, the straightforward option is a separate radio receiver.
