Urine therapy has no established scientific support as a treatment, and Poison Control advises against drinking urine. The separate claim that people who drink it are “obsessed with AI” or routinely use chatbots to validate the practice is not established by the available evidence. Research does document a narrower concern: some tested AI models can go along with false medical premises, so a confident or agreeable response should not be treated as proof that a health claim is true.
Does drinking your own urine cure anything?
No reliable evidence in the cited health guidance supports urine therapy as a treatment. Poison Control says scientific evidence for therapeutic use is lacking and advises against drinking urine or using it as an alternative medicine. It also advises against applying urine to open wounds or using it for ear infections. Poison Control’s guidance is practical poison-control advice; it is not a clinical trial showing that every exposure causes harm.
Urine is about 95% water, but it also contains urea, creatinine, electrolytes, and other compounds. Poison Control says it is not sterile. The Ukrainian Ministry of Health likewise describes urine therapy as unproven and warns that urine can carry pathogens, particularly when a person has a urinary infection.

Are urine drinkers actually using AI for reassurance?
The claim that people who drink their own urine are especially devoted to AI or use it to confirm urine therapy is not verified by the cited sources. They do not establish how often this group uses chatbots, what questions they ask, or whether a chatbot has reassured them that urine is a cure-all. Without direct reporting or data, it would be misleading to present that behavior as a documented trend.
There is a related, but narrower, concern about chatbot answers. A 2025 npj Digital Medicine study tested five frontier large language models using prompts that misstated relationships between equivalent drugs. It found a vulnerability in which models may favor helpfulness or agreement over critical reasoning when users introduce false medical premises. The study did not test urine therapy, measure urine drinkers’ behavior, or establish that every chatbot response is unsafe.

A separate 2024 Nature Medicine paper examined how people perceived identical digital medical advice when it was labeled as written by a human physician or an AI-supported chatbot, including perceived reliability, comprehensibility, and empathy. It concerns how people receive advice, not whether urine drinkers seek AI reassurance.
How to assess an AI answer about a health claim
- Check the claim against health authorities. For urine therapy, Poison Control says evidence for therapeutic use is lacking and advises against drinking urine.
- Do not confuse fluency with verification. A detailed answer that accepts a user’s premise may still repeat a false or unsupported claim.
- Use a qualified professional for symptoms. A chatbot cannot determine whether you have a urinary tract infection or which treatment is appropriate.
What to do about urinary symptoms instead
If you have urinary symptoms, seek assessment from a healthcare professional rather than trying urine therapy or relying on a chatbot diagnosis. The CDC’s Urinary Tract Infection Basics, updated and reviewed September 22, 2026, explains that UTIs occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract and says a healthcare professional can determine whether a UTI is present and which antibiotic is needed.

For hydration, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) identifies water as the best fluid. It says cranberry products do not treat an existing bladder infection and advises discussing complementary or alternative practices with a healthcare professional. Drinking water is not a substitute for evaluation or treatment when an infection may be present.

Using raw urine as a remedy is different from a laboratory testing a urine sample for medical information. It is also different from using urea as an ingredient in a controlled product. The fact that urine contains compounds such as urea does not establish that drinking urine is therapeutic.
