AI can help developers produce code faster, but faster code generation is not the same as faster delivery of correct, maintainable software. Survey respondents often report speed gains while also describing substantial review and correction work; controlled studies have found both faster and slower completion, depending on the task. The practical question is whether an AI-assisted workflow saves time after verification and rework—not how quickly it produces code.

Why speed and trust can move in opposite directions

An assistant can draft a function or suggest a change quickly. You still need to establish that the change does what the task requires, fits the existing code, and does not break other behavior. That verification may involve reading the output, running tests, correcting mistakes, or revising the approach.

So “AI writes code faster” can be true at the drafting stage while the full task takes no less time. Generated code is best treated as a proposal to evaluate, not a result whose correctness follows from its speed or fluency.

What developers report about speed, trust, and review

In a 2026 developer survey of 1,149 respondents, 82% said AI helps them code faster, while 96% said they did not fully trust AI-generated code to be functionally correct. These are reported perceptions, not measurements of time saved or code defect rates. The survey also found that 95% of respondents spent at least some effort reviewing, testing, or correcting AI output; 59% described that effort as moderate or substantial. Only 48% said they always checked AI-assisted code before committing, and 38% said reviewing AI code required more effort than reviewing a colleague’s code.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Together, the responses show why speed confidence and correctness confidence are different things. They do not establish how often generated code is wrong, how much time a particular developer saves, or whether every review catches problems.

Why controlled studies report different results

Measured task completion offers a different kind of evidence, but results depend on what participants are asked to do and which tools they use. A synthesis by the Montana Research Foundation describes two studies with contrasting outcomes:

Study setting Reported result What the comparison means
Scoped task to implement a JavaScript HTTP server, using an AI coding assistant Participants completed the task 55.8% faster. A bounded implementation task can benefit from assistance; this result does not establish the effect on work in a mature codebase.
2025 randomized trial: 16 experienced open-source developers addressed 246 issues in their own repositories, mostly large, mature projects. Tools included early-2025 AI coding tools with advanced language models. Participants took 19% longer when AI tools were allowed. Working through real issues in a familiar, established codebase differs from implementing a scoped task. The tools and study settings were also different.

The figures are summarized by the Montana Research Foundation; they are not a head-to-head comparison of equivalent assistants or tasks. They support a narrower conclusion: AI’s effect on completion time can change with the work being done. The synthesis is secondary reporting, rather than the original publication of both studies.

How to read reported productivity gains

Self-estimates are not the same as a controlled time comparison

The UK Government Digital Service ran a coding-assistant trial from November 2024 to February 2025 across more than 50 public-sector organizations. It distributed 2,500 licenses, assigned 1,900, and collected 424 survey responses from users in 31 departments; 73% of respondents had at least five years of coding experience. Respondents estimated average savings of 56 minutes per working day, including 24 minutes attributed to code creation and analysis. Those are users’ estimates, not a randomized comparison with a no-assistant group.

The report also describes usage telemetry: an average of 15.8% of suggested code lines were accepted. That figure records acceptance, not whether accepted code was correct, retained after review, or faster to deliver overall. Separately, 58% of respondents said they would not want to return to work without an assistant. The Government Digital Service trial report distinguishes survey estimates from telemetry; neither should be mistaken for a controlled measure of end-to-end productivity.

Organizational surveys can identify concerns, not prove causation

An IBM Research CHI 2025 case study examined an enterprise code assistant through surveys of two cohorts (N=669) and unmoderated usability testing (N=15). It found perceived productivity increases were common but not universal, and examined questions of ownership and responsibility for generated code. Its findings describe a specific enterprise product and study, not all developers or organizations. IBM Research’s case study is useful context for why code ownership matters alongside speed.

A June 23, 2026 survey release from software vendor GitLab reported that 78% of 1,528 developers and technology buyers across six countries said developers write and commit code faster after adopting AI tools; 85% agreed AI had shifted the bottleneck toward code review and validation. The results reflect survey perceptions, and the publisher sells software in this market. They are not independent measurements of delivery time or proof that adoption caused the reported changes. GitLab’s survey release also raises concerns about maintainability, technical debt, and governance.

Google Research’s summary of seven DORA and Engineering Productivity Research studies reports that developers who trust generative AI tend to use it more, and that developers often feel more productive when using it. Perceived productivity and trust are relevant to adoption, but neither guarantees that generated code is correct. Google Research’s summary addresses those perceptions rather than establishing a universal productivity gain.

How to judge whether AI is saving you time

Track the work through completion instead of using output volume as a proxy. For a representative task, compare an AI-assisted attempt with your usual workflow and include the time spent understanding the request, adapting suggestions, reviewing changes, running tests, fixing failures, and maintaining the result. A fast draft is useful only if the complete, verified change costs less effort without lowering the required quality.

  • Define the task and its acceptance criteria before asking for code, so you can judge the result against a real requirement.
  • Review the proposed change in the context of the surrounding code rather than assuming that plausible-looking output fits the project.
  • Run the tests and checks appropriate to the change, and add or update tests where needed to verify the intended behavior.
  • Record review and correction time as well as drafting time. If suggestions repeatedly require substantial rework, that is part of the workflow’s cost.
  • Assess maintainability and ownership: make sure someone can explain, support, and safely change the resulting code.

These are practical evaluation principles, not a guarantee that a specific checking process catches every defect. The cited studies do not establish a universally best verification workflow or a general defect rate for AI-generated code. Nor does accepting a suggestion prove that it was useful in the finished change.

What the evidence does—and does not—settle

Across surveys, trial reports, and controlled studies, the result depends on the measure. Self-reported speed, suggested-line acceptance, perceived productivity, and observed task completion are not interchangeable. Studies also differ in task scope, repository maturity, participant experience, and tool generation. Read each number in its own setting rather than combining it into a single claim about how much faster AI makes all coding.

The evidence supports neither “AI always makes developers faster” nor “AI never saves time.” It shows that assistance can feel faster and can speed up some bounded work, while review and rework remain part of the job and other tasks may take longer. Whether it helps you is an empirical question about your tasks and the total effort required to deliver work you can trust.
