A VPN is not a fix for recording or monitoring latency. That delay is shaped by your audio interface, drivers, buffer settings, operating system and DAW processing. A VPN may be useful for privacy on an untrusted network, but it can disrupt local collaboration: Ableton says Link does not work over a VPN. Choose a VPN for a specific privacy or permitted catalog-access need, not because it promises faster or better-sounding production.
Does a VPN affect audio latency?
A VPN routes internet traffic through an encrypted connection to a VPN server. That can affect the speed or latency of network traffic, but it does not remove the delays in your local audio chain. For recording and monitoring, Ableton identifies contributors including audio conversion and buffers, the interface and its driver, the operating system, Live, and plug-ins or devices. Ableton’s latency explanation gives a worked example: a 256-sample buffer at 44.1 kHz takes 5.8 milliseconds for one conversion stage. That is not total round-trip latency and is not a VPN measurement.
Buffer size is a practical control: a smaller buffer can reduce latency, but it requires more CPU headroom. If the system cannot keep up, audio dropouts may occur. Ableton’s latency-reduction guidance recommends reducing buffer size only as far as the computer can handle, using an appropriate audio interface and drivers, and avoiding Bluetooth or Wi-Fi audio when low latency matters.

Ableton says Link does not work over a VPN. If Link-enabled devices are not detected, pause or disable the VPN and check that the network allows peer discovery and peer-to-peer traffic. This advice is specific to Link; other collaboration apps may behave differently. See Ableton’s Link troubleshooting steps.

What connection is best for local Link Audio?
Link Audio runs between devices on a local network. Its latency includes the interface buffer and time spent transmitting audio over that network. Ableton says wired Ethernet provides the most stable and lowest-latency connection; Wi-Fi reliability varies with network quality and interference. A cable such as Cat 6 can connect studio devices over Ethernet, but a wired local connection does not make Link work through a VPN or guarantee lower latency over a long-distance internet connection. How should you choose a VPN for a music-related use?
There is no established “best VPN for music production” based on DAW round-trip latency: the available VPN comparisons test general performance, privacy, policies, protocols or streaming—not controlled recording, monitoring, Link or remote-session workflows. Treat a provider ranking or speed test as general VPN evidence, not proof that a service improves production. Reviews that report speeds should identify the reviewer’s date, protocol, server location, test setup and metric; results can vary with those conditions. TechRadar’s VPN roundup, RTINGS’ VPN coverage and Security.org’s speed-test explanation are examples of general VPN comparison material, not DAW benchmarks.

- For privacy while traveling: Assess the provider’s privacy policy, ownership information, independently documented audits, supported protocols, device limits and platform compatibility. A VPN protects traffic routed through it; it does not replace secure account practices or make every service anonymous.

- For production or collaboration: Do not select a VPN on the assumption it lowers DAW latency. Test the exact application and workflow you use; for Ableton Link, disconnect the VPN if peers are missing.
What to use instead for remote collaboration
For collaborators in different locations, Ableton lists exchanging project files or stems, cloud storage, in-DAW collaboration tools and screen sharing as possible workflows. Cloud syncing can cause performance or file-indexing errors, so transfer project folders carefully and coordinate compatible Live editions. Screen sharing may add latency and create stereo-imaging or routing problems. Choose the workflow around the material being shared rather than assuming a VPN will make a real-time session behave like a local studio network.
