Sometimes—but not for everyone. A second monitor is most likely to help when you regularly compare documents, consult reference material, or keep secondary information visible while working in a main application. Studies find task-specific efficiency benefits and a strong user preference for multiple monitors, but they do not establish a universal productivity boost or a reliable percentage gain. The layout matters: extra screen space can also mean more head turning.
What the evidence says about productivity
A 2021 systematic review covering 18 studies found moderate evidence from controlled laboratory studies that multiple monitors may improve task efficiency and reduce desktop interaction. A separate summary of the evidence reports that performance generally improved or stayed the same, with results influenced by the task. The review also found strong evidence that users prefer dual-monitor setups. Preference is useful, but it is not the same as a measured increase in output.
The evidence does not support a single productivity percentage for ordinary workers. Results vary with task, screen arrangement, and study conditions, and longer-term everyday effects remain uncertain. The review calls for longitudinal field studies that measure performance, health, and well-being together. See the systematic review record and its online publication.
Why the result depends on the task
Two displays can make it easier to view a working document alongside a reference, compare materials, or monitor background activity. That can reduce time spent switching or rearranging windows. But if most of your work happens in one focused application, a second display may add little. In a 2018 laboratory study of 18 engineering students, researchers found no statistically significant efficiency or workload differences across three tested computing conditions. Usability or error comparisons from that study should not be treated as proof of a general productivity gain (study record).

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
When a second monitor is most useful
Consider whether simultaneous visibility solves a recurring problem in your work. A second screen is a plausible fit when you repeatedly need to:
- Compare two documents, spreadsheets, designs, or data sources.
- Keep reference material visible while writing, coding, or editing in a primary application.
- Watch a background task, communication channel, or status display without leaving your main work.
In a 1999 field study, Jonathan Grudin found that people often used a secondary monitor for “peripheral awareness” of information outside their main focus. That is a different role from simply enlarging the workspace: a secondary screen may be useful as a glanceable surface, but notifications or background information can also compete for attention. The study is available from Microsoft Research.

Trade-offs: attention, posture, and desk space
More visibility can mean more distraction
A persistent second screen can reduce window switching when its content supports the task. If it is filled with alerts or unrelated activity, it can interrupt concentration instead. Keep the secondary display focused on information that you genuinely need to check while working; the evidence on peripheral awareness does not show that every notification surface improves performance.

In a 2013 experiment, 10 healthy participants performed short reading, typing, and search tasks. Compared with one monitor, dual monitors increased head-neck rotation by 9.0 degrees and the range of head-neck rotation by 8.4 degrees. These are findings from brief laboratory tasks, not evidence that dual monitors cause neck disorders or establish long-term injury rates. The study is documented by the CDC.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
A 2023 Human Factors study of 17 graduate students found that centered and secondary-display arrangements changed neck-rotation patterns, while performance effects depended on the task. Its authors recommended monitor arms to make it easier to switch between centered and secondary arrangements as needs change. The small convenience sample limits how broadly to apply those findings; the study does not establish one ideal angle or guarantee that an arm prevents injury (study).
Keep the screen you look at most directly in front of you, and make placement adjustable if your primary work shifts between displays. If you spend similar amounts of time on both, consider whether you can reposition them rather than repeatedly turning toward a screen that stays off to one side. A monitor arm is one possible way to change placement, not a medical safeguard.

Desk space and alternatives
A second physical display takes desk space and requires a compatible computer connection. The reviewed studies do not establish a universal need or a break-even price. A single larger or ultrawide display may provide more horizontal room without the same two-screen arrangement. In one small study, a 34-inch curved ultrawide viewed from a longer distance produced neck kinematics similar to a single 24-inch display, with a possible reduction in screen interactions. That finding does not show that ultrawide displays are better for everyone.

- Identify the recurring bottleneck. Note when you lose time switching between windows, comparing materials, or checking background information. If that rarely happens, another display may not address a real problem.
- Try the intended layout on your actual work. Use a second computer monitor for the tasks where simultaneous visibility should help. Compare how easily you complete those tasks and how often you switch windows; a short trial is a practical check, not proof of a long-term productivity change.
- Place screens around your main viewing area. Put the display used most directly in front of you. If the work alternates between screens, test an adjustable arrangement that reduces sustained repeated turning.
- Keep the secondary screen purposeful. Show a reference, comparison, or status view that supports the task. Remove or silence unrelated notifications if they pull attention away.
- Keep it only if it solves the problem. Judge the setup by whether it makes recurring work easier without creating an uncomfortable viewing pattern or more distraction—not by an assumed percentage increase.
What can—and cannot—be concluded about comfort
Posture changes are worth considering, but they are not themselves proof of injury. The systematic review raises concern that multiple monitors may lead to nonneutral neck postures. Separately, the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) Institute for Occupational Safety and Health says its instrumented office studies found no indication of a hazard from the dual-monitor setups it tested, with limiting physiological factors minor and generally not significant. These findings address different study sets, placements, and outcomes, so neither is a universal safety verdict. The DGUV describes its work at Office workstations with multiple screens.
