No—not beyond what Xbox Series X|S can output. The consoles support up to 120Hz, so a 240Hz display’s extra refresh capacity is unused by Xbox. A compatible 120Hz screen can still improve the experience in games with modes that render above 60 frames per second.
What 240Hz means for Xbox Series X|S
Xbox lists Series X|S output at up to 120Hz, not 240Hz. A 240Hz TV or monitor therefore will not show Xbox games at 240Hz; the console remains the limit, regardless of the display’s maximum refresh rate. See Xbox’s Series X|S comparison and its display setup guidance.
Refresh rate and frame rate describe different things. Refresh rate is how often the screen can update; frame rate is how many frames a game renders each second. A screen capable of 120Hz can display a game mode above 60 frames per second, but choosing 120Hz in the console settings does not force every game to render at 120fps or sustain that performance throughout play.
When 120Hz makes a difference
A 120Hz-capable display is the practical high-refresh target for Xbox. You can benefit when a game offers a mode that renders above 60fps and the display, HDMI connection, and console settings support the matching output. Xbox has described 4K at 120Hz over HDMI 2.1 as a use case for Series X|S-compatible monitors. That is a 120Hz mode, not a 240Hz Xbox mode. Xbox’s monitor announcement
#1 Best Overall
- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
Whether a particular game offers a higher-frame-rate mode depends on the game. The console’s selected output refresh rate is not a performance guarantee.
What to prioritize when choosing a display
For Xbox-only use, compare the display’s actual capabilities over HDMI rather than buying on its maximum refresh-rate label alone.

- Resolution at 120Hz: Check that the exact HDMI input supports the resolution and refresh-rate combination you want, such as 4K at 120Hz.
- VRR and image quality: Consider variable refresh rate (VRR), HDR performance, and overall picture quality. Xbox also supports Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM); its display guidance highlights HDR, 4K/120Hz, and VRR as relevant features.
- Latency and gaming mode: Compare input latency and how the display performs with its gaming mode enabled.
- Size, viewing distance, and price: These can matter more to your setup than refresh capacity above 120Hz.
A 240Hz monitor can still be a sensible choice if you also connect a PC that can use refresh rates above 120Hz. That higher ceiling would benefit the PC source, not Xbox.

Check Xbox and display compatibility before buying
- Check the exact model and HDMI port. Look up the supported resolution and refresh rate for the display’s HDMI input, not just its DisplayPort specification. Xbox cannot use DisplayPort as its video connection, and some displays offer a desired mode only through that input. Certain TVs also enable advanced features on specific HDMI ports. Xbox’s display setup guidance and Xbox’s connection guidance
- Confirm the HDMI cable. For Series X, Xbox recommends the included Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.1 features. If you are replacing a cable, make sure the replacement supports the mode you intend to use.
- Check the console’s detected capabilities. On Xbox, open Settings → General → TV & display options → 4K TV details. This screen shows which capabilities Xbox detects from the connected setup.
- Select 120Hz only if the setup supports it. Under Settings → General → TV & display options, choose the supported resolution and refresh rate. The available options depend on the display and connection.
If 120Hz is missing
- Try the display’s HDMI port specified for high-bandwidth or 4K/120Hz features; not every port necessarily supports the same modes.
- Enable the display’s enhanced HDMI or gaming mode if its instructions require it.
- Check whether the desired refresh rate is supported at your selected resolution. A display’s specifications may list different limits for HDMI and DisplayPort.
- While troubleshooting, connect the Xbox directly to the display rather than through another device.
- Recheck the detected capabilities in 4K TV details after changing the connection or display settings.
