No. A 240 Hz monitor can be connected to a PC without a high-end graphics card. The GPU matters if you want a particular game to render close to 240 frames per second (fps) at your chosen resolution and graphics settings. That performance depends on the game and workload—not on the monitor’s refresh-rate label alone.
What 240 Hz means—and what it does not
Refresh rate is how often a display can update its image each second; frame rate is how many frames the PC or game renders each second. A 240 Hz monitor can refresh up to 240 times per second when configured for that mode, but it cannot make a game produce 240 fps. AMD describes FreeSync as synchronizing a compatible display’s refresh rate with the frame rate from a compatible graphics card, illustrating that the two rates are related but distinct (AMD FreeSync Technology).
You can use the monitor at lower frame rates, though the experience depends on the game, setup, and whether variable refresh is supported and enabled. Aiming for 240 fps is a separate performance goal; it is not a requirement for owning or using the display.

A more powerful graphics card may help if your goal is to render a demanding game near 240 fps at a high resolution or with image-quality settings turned up. There is no universal GPU tier that guarantees 240 fps across games: the title, scene, resolution, and settings all affect performance. The available evidence does not establish a specific card that will sustain 240 fps in local games, so a monitor’s specification alone is not a sound basis for choosing one.
#1 Best Overall
- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
- You mainly play lightweight or competitive games: Check performance in the specific games and settings you use. Do not assume that every title will reach 240 fps.
- You play visually demanding games: Decide which resolution and graphics quality matter to you, then compare measured performance for those exact games and settings before considering an upgrade.
- You are content with fewer than 240 fps: You can still use the monitor. If your equipment supports variable refresh, it can align the display’s refresh rate with changing frame rates.
Variable refresh can help when frame rates fluctuate
AMD says FreeSync synchronizes a supported display’s refresh rate with the frame rate from a compatible graphics card to reduce or eliminate visual artifacts such as tearing and stuttering. NVIDIA describes G-SYNC as matching the monitor’s refresh rate to the GPU frame rate (NVIDIA G-SYNC: Variable Refresh Rate). These technologies can be useful when a game runs below or varies around 240 fps, but compatibility depends on the monitor, graphics card, driver, and connection. They do not guarantee that every artifact will disappear on every setup.
Check your setup before buying a graphics card
- Look up the monitor’s supported modes. Check its manual or specifications for the resolution and refresh-rate combinations supported by each input. A monitor may not support every mode over every port.
- Confirm the PC’s output can use that mode. Check the graphics card’s outputs and the monitor’s connection requirements. Do not choose a cable based on “240 Hz” alone; match the ports and the exact resolution/refresh mode.
- Select the refresh rate in your settings. In NVIDIA Control Panel, open Display > Change resolution and choose an available refresh rate for the display. NVIDIA documents this control-panel setting (NVIDIA Control Panel Help: Change the refresh rate).
- Check actual game performance. Test the titles you play at your preferred resolution and graphics settings. If performance already meets your goal, the monitor alone is not a reason to upgrade. If it does not, identify the specific game and settings that fall short before comparing GPUs.
Do not confuse cloud-streaming requirements with local gaming
GeForce NOW publishes its own client requirements for streaming, including requirements associated with FHD and QHD streams at 240 fps. Those are requirements for using NVIDIA’s cloud service, not benchmarks for how powerful a local GPU must be to render games at 240 fps (GeForce NOW system requirements). If you play through a cloud service, check the requirements for your membership and stream mode separately from your PC’s local gaming performance.

What a 240 Hz monitor tells you
The specification describes a real category of display rather than a guarantee of game performance. For example, ViewSonic lists a 24-inch, 1080p, 240 Hz gaming monitor with AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-SYNC compatibility on its official product page. That example does not establish a universal minimum GPU, nor does it mean every game will run at 240 fps.
